Talk show host Wendy Williams revealed on Wednesday that she has Graves' disease. The host of "The Wendy Williams Show" made the announcement during her syndicated show, saying she will take three weeks off starting on Thursday to focus on her health."My doctor has prescribed ... are you ready? As of today, three weeks of vacation," she told the audience. "What? Who are you? I was pissed."Graves' disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes overstimulation of the thyroid, which can lead to puffy eyes, anxiety, fatigue, insomnia and elevated blood pressure, according to endocrineweb.com.Williams canceled several shows last week after announcing on social media that she was experiencing flu-like symptoms. Her health has made headlines in recent months after she fainted on-air during an October 31 episode of her show. At the time, she told viewers that she collapsed as a result of being "overheated.""I'll be back in two [weeks]," Williams joked during her show on Wednesday. "I'm not an heiress. Who is going to pay my bills? Are you serious? I'm just saying, I come from working class."Williams' representative told CNN she will not have a fill-in host and that they will rerun old episodes during her absence. 1236
Thanksgiving may not have all the fixings this year. Most Americans are planning a scaled back event. But 75% of people told Butterball they plan to have a turkey the same size this year, as last year.“If you're looking for a smaller turkey, I would recommend shopping early to get what you want,” said Andrea Balitewicz, Butterball Turkey Talk-Line Supervisor. While many people are looking for some normalcy this Thanksgiving, 30% are hosting immediate family only.Butterball says there will also be more first-time hosts.“But there's also other products available like our turkey breast roasts, which are perfect for just a couple of people, or you can find the bone in turkey breast and that's a really great product too, and it's some for about six to seven people. So, it's a great product for smaller celebrations.”Butterball is planning the same offerings as usual. About half its turkeys will be in the 10-16 pound range. The other half in the 16-24 pound range.Walmart says it will have 30% more turkey breasts for those that don't want to cook a whole bird, even though they will have plenty of those.Kroger bought more turkeys than usual. It's predicting an increase in demand for alternatives.Turkey sales have been falling in general, according to Nielsen data. Last November they were down 3.5% from the year before. The AARP launched new ads, demanding Congress take action to help older Americans to find affordable medication. It’s a problem David Mitchell is experiencing. He is fighting blood cancer, and treatment does not come cheap.“The drugs I use right now that are keeping me alive, keeping the cancer at bay, cost 0,000 a year,” he says. “That’s retail price.”Mitchell pays for expensive, supplemental insurance so he can afford his medicine, but the sticker shock for cancer medication became an awakening.“The experience as a cancer patient brought me face-to-face with a fundamental truth, and that is drugs don’t work if people can’t afford them,” Mitchell says. “And all over the country, people are struggling with high-drug costs. They’re cutting pills in half, they’re skipping doses, they go into debt, they declare bankruptcy.”David started an organization called Patients for Affordable Drugs. He’s on a mission to lower prescription prices. This week, he’s getting help from one of the largest nonprofits in the country.AARP launched a new campaign to pressure Congress not to make any changes to a bill they passed earlier this year that lowered drug costs for seniors.“AARP is saying absolutely not. This is wrong. We’re going to protect that deal that reduced costs for Medicare beneficiaries, and we’re not gonna give Pharma a billion bailout,” Mitchell says.Healthcare was a top issue during the midterm elections, and Mitchell hopes the new ads will put pressure on the new Congress to do more.“In the midterm elections, politicians ran on a promise to lower drug prices, and we believe that voters can Congress a mandate to do it,” Mitchell says. 1678
