SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Neglecting dental hygiene can not only impact a person's overall health but also their self-esteem. For many San Diegans, a lack of insurance means they don't see a dentist for years or even decades. “I’ve seen people in my practice in the private area that haven’t been to the dentist in 20 to 40 years," said Dr. Irvin Silverstein, director of the UCSD Student-Run Free Clinic Project.The student-run clinic has been working to fill the gap for low-income patients in San Diego for 20 years. “The biggest thing it has done is help meet the need in San Diego for a lot of underserved people. People think that underserved means homelessness or out on the streets, no. We see a lot of working poor," said Silverstein. The four UCSD clinics are run by students and volunteer dentists, offering free care to the community:Downtown: Provides comprehensive dental care and oral health education to underserved San DiegansPacific Beach: Offers urgent dental care to patients in severe pain or with active infectionsLemon Grove: Offers dental care to Lemon Grove School District students Pre-K to 8th grade and their families Veterans Village: Offers free dental care to veterans participating in a 9-month long rehabilitation programDr. Silverstein says another issue they are seeing is retirees no longer having access to dental care because Medicare does not cover it. He says the American Dental Association (ADA) is acknowledging dentistry should be a benefit in Medicare; to at least get teeth cleaned twice a year and examined.Medicaid does provide some dental coverage, but there are limitations, and only 20 percent of dentists nationwide accept it, according to the Center for Healthcare Strategies, Inc. Dr. Silverstein says he often sees parents getting care for their children while neglecting their own. “They’ll put off going to the dentist, and by the time they realize they have a problem, it’s so expensive they don’t know what to do. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Police are searching for a reported bank robbery suspect in the Mission Valley area late Friday.A bank robbery was reported at the US Bank location at Frazee Road just before 5 p.m., according to San Diego Police. At one point, SWAT officers were called in to assist.SDPD initially reported that shots were fired inside the bank based on accounts from "scared employees" but later confirmed no shots had been fired. Police are currently searching for a suspect. No injuries have been immediately reported. The building was reportedly locked down as police searched.The suspected was described as a Hispanic male in his 20s, wearing a black mask or bandana, black hooded shirt, black pants, tan backpack armed with a handgun. 751

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One driver was arrested after video of a road rage incident in Oceanside made its way into CHP's hands.Two drivers, one in a gray Ford Explorer and the other in a gray BMW convertible, were involved in the February 15 incident on eastbound State Route 78 in Oceanside, according to California Highway Patrol officers.Officers responded to a report of a non-injury, hit-and-run collision just before 4:30 p.m. near the College Blvd. exit. Officers arrived and found the Explorer on its side on the center median while the BMW reportedly fled.RELATED: Road Rage Crisis: Violence on the RiseWhile investigating, officers were made aware of a video recorded by a witness.The video showed the driver of the BMW, identified as 33-year-old Kevin McCall, left his vehicle to berate the driver of the Explorer, identified as 23-year-old Andrew Branch, who was still inside his vehicle, according to CHP.Officers said McCall spit at Branch before returning to his BMW. Branch is then seen driving into the center median and accelerating into the BMW, narrowly missing McCall.Sideswiping the BMW caused the Explorer to overturn onto its side. McCall then drove away, officers said."It was pretty shocking. It was pretty shocking," said CHP Officer Mark Latulippe. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Point Loma High School students welcomed gender-neutral homecoming royalty this week, eliminating the traditional roles of king and queen.At Friday night’s homecoming game, two senior boys were selected as kings. Most students at Point Loma High School said they support the change.Associated Student Body president Ila Komasa told 10News previous homecoming kings and queens were couples. This year, she wanted to make it more individualized. “We didn’t believe the couple aspect applied to what homecoming court meant to us and what it should represent for the students," Komasa said.Komasa was hopeful students would be given the opportunity to vote for anyone they wanted.“We made the decision to individually elect and nominate two students from each grade level as homecoming court and then for seniors, homecoming royalty.” It’s an effort to make homecoming more inclusive, no longer focusing on one’s high school relationship status, rather the impact made on peers. The students got the idea after two senior boys were voted to win the prom royalty titles. 1093

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One of San Diego's hottest restaurant groups is suing the City of San Diego, in part, for negligence. The owner of Little Italy’s The Crack Shack and Juniper & Ivy gave 10 News an exclusive interview regarding allegations that the city failed to remedy issues which led to last summer’s massive water main break that flooded much of the area. “It seems the city is using a ‘whack-a-mole’ approach,” says restaurant owner Michael Rosen when asked about the city’s way of addressing underground piping issues.  Rosen’s Juniper Hospitality restaurant group in suing the city for negligence, negligent interference with economic advantage and prospective economic advantage, and inverse condemnation. According to the recently filed lawsuit, before the July water main break, “…the defendants were working within the area and had left temporary water pipes above ground, which were being run over by hundreds of cars a day, for approximately six months with no further attempt to repair or remove…The Defendants issued a ‘quick fix’ to the problem in lieu of fixing the unstable water main which resulted in the massive rupture that occurred.” “This is what happens when you ignore a problem for so many months,” he tells 10 News. Rosen claims more than 400 reservations had to be canceled. “We likely lost 30 to 40 thousand dollars in revenue for the day and it was a very busy day,” he adds. “It’s just mind-boggling,” says Adam Babin of Power Keg Athletics. Babin’s CrossFit studio was destroyed beyond repair. He believes he lost more than 0,000 in property, alone. “Hands down, this was the toughest and most mentally and emotionally [difficult] situations I've ever had to deal with in my life,” he adds.  “It definitely hurt my business for sure,” says Rebecca Hyde-Edwards of Hyde Edwards Salon and Spa. Hyde-Edwards, Babin and Rosen say they have yet to receive adequate responses from the city after submitting their damage claims.  "This is a destination area and [the city] should look out for all the businesses that make it what it is,” adds Hyde-Edwards. A City of San Diego spokesperson tells 10News the city has received 28 claims and paid out .5 million to date. Only 3 of the 28 claims have been resolved. It reports that claimants have not submitted all of the supporting documentation, so not all claims have been paid. Timeframes for payments are reportedly done on a case by case basis and vary depending upon when all the supporting documentation is received and evaluated by the City.  The city’s aging water system infrastructure has wreaked havoc. More than 0 million have been spent in the last 5 years to repair and replace more than 100 miles of piping. Rosen tells 10News he’d be happy to drop his lawsuit if the city had a comprehensive plan to fix Little Italy’s crumbling piping. “It’s our expectation and justifiable fear that we'll have to close many days in the future unless this is really addressed,” he says of his restaurants.  A city spokesperson reports the broken section of pipe in Little Italy was immediately replaced after the flooding. The city’s 0.95 mile pipeline replacement project in that area was reportedly completed last summer. A spokesperson for the city says there are no additional plans for pipeline repairs or replacement for that immediate area.  The city will not respond to the lawsuit.
