Refoundry helps give formerly incarcerated people a second chance. Now they’re giving back in a special way, helping protect people behind bars during the pandemic.Refoundry's mission is giving people a second chance by providing skills and opportunity. The nonprofit, created by Cisco Pinedo and Tommy Safian, trains formerly incarcerated people to repurpose discarded materials into home furnishings. Their program is structured into three stages over the period, starting off with placement in a living wage job ending with mentorship that could lead to business ownership.So far, 10 businesses have started with the help of Refoundry, giving jobs to more than 125 people.Back in 2016, Scripps station WPIX in New York visited Refoundry in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Now, they’re adding another effort to their outreach as a result of the pandemic and putting the Refoundry onsite program on hiatus during the lockdown."We launched something called ‘Makers Make Masks,’ that enlists formerly incarcerated people that are homebound because of the pandemic to help combat a public health crisis by sewing reusable washable masks for the most vulnerable people in our society the incarcerated and the homeless," explained Safian.The masks are being donated to homeless support services in Los Angeles and at Rikers Island in New York, where more than 850 masks have already been delivered.The Refoundry set up 20 formerly incarcerated workers with sewing machines, pre-cut fabrics, technical support and training with the help of grants and donations.“This allows… people with the opportunity to demonstrate their value,” explained Safian “to themselves and to their community and to society ... it really does mean a lot."Once the pandemic is over, Refoundry plans on launching a second location Los Angeles and moving into a new space at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. After responding to an online advertisement for French bulldog puppies last weekend, a Wooster, Ohio, family worries that they might have been taken advantage of. Not only do they not have the dog they were hoping to bring into their family, but they are also out more than ,500, the family said.In late August and in early November, the Mark family was forced to say goodbye to their two beloved dogs, one of which formerly belonged to Angela Mark's father who passed away earlier this year."That was all she had left of her father," Brady Mark said.The other dog, who passed away Nov. 15th, was a loveable American bulldog that was a companion animal to the Mark's teenage son. The family was taking the back-to-back losses pretty hard, Mark said, which explains why he and Angela so easily gravitated to an online advertisement for French bulldog puppies from a seller in Montana.The seller reportedly told Angela that a family member of his had also recently passed away. Unable to take care of the puppies himself, the seller reportedly said that he would offer a puppy at a steeply discounted rate but the Mark family would have to pay for shipping, which would be around 0.The seller could not be reached for comment and his online advertisement has been taken down.Angela says she was directed to use a Montana-based company, American Delivery Service. The company's fairly official-looking website says the company, "[aims] to provide pet owners with unique advanced solutions needed to fly with your pets." The website does not list an address and calls to the listed phone number were not answered.Additionally, there does not appear to be an official filing for American Deliver Service through the Montana Secretary of State's Office.In the contracts, messages and invoices from alleged representatives of American Delivery Service, there were numerous grammatical and spelling errors, as well as no official letterhead.In hindsight, Brady Mark said there were several red flags."We've been getting the runaround back and forth from the shipping company. Who's legitimate and who's not? We don't know yet," Mark said. "[Alleged company representatives] said, 'hey we need more money for this this and this.' We still have no dog and we're about 00 deep right now, probably even more than that."Mark said the alleged company went as far as to provide short videos and other media showing dogs in shipping containers, apparently suggesting the Mark's new puppy was in transit. There was also a shipment tracking number provided on the invoices. However, at every turn, there were demands for hundreds of dollars in order to pay for things like vaccines and special dog carriers.Angela Mark said an alleged company representative said the dog was waiting at a local airport and would be released to the family upon final payment. However, Brady Mark said he called the airport and an airport representative told him there weren't any animals in holding.Brady Mark said he and his wife have both come to the belief that their money may never be coming back."We borrowed money off of our daughter," Brady Mark said. "[Angela's] mom stepped in to try to help us out. We didn't just screw ourselves. We screwed other people in the process. It's going to screw us at the end of the month when bills start coming due. We might be short on rent. It's not their problem, it's ours. Still, if it can help somebody else to avoid what we just went through, so be it. If it prevents it happening from someone else, I guess I'll be that goat."According to the Better Business Bureau, so-called puppy scams have grown in number and in complexity in recent years. The past three years, the BBB has received nearly 10,000 reports of puppy scams. However, the FTC estimates that only 10% of victims actually come forward.Although the scams have grown more complex, they are often distinguishable by certain hallmarks. Possible red flags include communications only through email, copycat or easily obtainable stock photos and payments through non-traditional services like pre-paid gift cards. LINWOOD, Kan. – A former animal control officer is fighting with the City of Linwood, Kansas, for a family pet — a pet pot-bellied pig. His name is Dude and he's a 6-year-old Juliana pot-bellied pig. He's the newest member of Bailey Parker's menagerie at her home. He shares the yard with two ducks, four chickens, and occasionally the family's two dogs and cat. "I talk to them all like they're my children. Like, this is my family," Parker said. Dude even comes inside the house, too. Parker said he's more intelligent than her dogs, which the general public doesn't realize. Parker adopted him a few months ago from a goat farm, where he wasn't getting the specific care he needed. According to the City, Dude is livestock and not allowed inside city limits. "I would have never brought him in if I thought he was livestock or swine. A pot-bellied pig is not livestock," Parker said. She's asking the City to amend the ordinance or have the City issue her a special permit. The City refused a few months ago, but Parker and her attorneys returned to the city council meeting on Dec. 17. The City again denied the request and now Parker's attorneys, Tristen Woods and Lauren Kruskall, are taking the City to court in January. If they lose a bench trial, Woods said they will take it further to a jury trial in Leavenworth County. "At some point, we felt as a city we have to draw the line somewhere, otherwise you're going to start seeing people with horses and cows and sheep and everything else saying they're pets," said Brian Christenson, mayor of Linwood. Christenson said he's not against the pig, but laws are laws. The City recently amended the same animal control ordinance to allow pit bulls and chickens, of which Christenson said Parker has taken advantage. "The biggest problem we have, we don't have the resources, the animal control, all the things we would have to start adding these exotic animals," Christenson said. Not long after Parker adopted him, Dude got out of the yard and wandered to the park across the street because her kids accidentally left the fence open. Christenson said it took four people two hours to wrangle the pig, but Parker said it wasn't a big deal and she has since made provisions to prevent it from happening again. "We don't have animal control officers. We don't know what kind of medicines [pigs] have, what shots they're supposed to have," said Christenson. "It's just more work added that we'd have to do." Parker said Dude is well taken care of and isn't a nuisance. "If I have the means to give them something, I want to be able to help them and I don’t think I should be told what I can and can’t have in my backyard," said Parker. Parker has gathered around 50 signatures on a permit from people who support her request. Nearby DeSoto, Kansas, allows pot-bellied pigs as pets. Kansas City, Missouri, allows pot-bellied pigs, too. Bonner Springs doesn't have any language on the books about pot-bellied pigs, but the city council is taking up the topic at its next meeting on Jan. 13. Eudora and Olathe don't have language on pot-bellied pigs, either. The neighborhood app Nextdoor has gotten a reputation for sometimes strange posts that can prompt mean and off-color responses.There's a whole Twitter account dedicated to examples. Now, Nextdoor has rolled out a new feature to try and keep some civility online. It's called a "Kindness Reminder." If you try and post a response that's similar to one that's been flagged in the past, you'll get a reminder of the community guidelines and that they can change your response. But you can still post what you want. “One of the problems of the age we're living in is that people don't necessarily share a common understanding of what counts as civil interaction,” said Keith Bybee, a professor of law and political science at Syracuse University.Bybee says some people are strategically not civil or just plain rude in order to attract attention. You see it in politics and trolling behavior. But in the end, civility benefits everyone. “Civility is sort of the lubricant that makes social interaction possible,” Bybee said. “It allows us to live in a diverse, heterogeneous society but nonetheless coordinate our actions for common purposes, so it’s important to find a way to get along with strangers.”Ultimately, you have to care what the other person thinks of you to achieve civility. 1418

A Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper was terminated after being caught on video pulling a mask off of a protester's face.Trooper Harvey Briggs was terminated Friday for "unprofessional conduct."A video surfaced of him interacting with protester, Andrew Golden, on the State Capitol grounds. Golden was recording a traffic stop of a woman near the Capitol, during which the protester claims Briggs ripped the protester's face mask off and threw it on the ground.The Tennessee Highway Patrol released the following statement:Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Jeff Long and Tennessee Highway Patrol Colonel Dereck Stewart today announced that a trooper in the Capitol Protection Unit has been terminated following an internal investigation into department policy violations.Trooper Harvey Briggs, a 22-year veteran of the department was served a termination notice on Friday, August 14, 2020 for unprofessional conduct. The department placed Trooper Briggs on discretionary leave with pay on August 12, after the department opened an investigation into reported policy violations on August 11.It is the Department of Safety and Homeland Security’s policy to warn, suspend, demote or dismiss any employee whenever just or legal cause exists.
