For the ladies in this gym, age isn't the number that matters most. "I’m going to be building up to 200. I want to get that done before I’m 80 years old,” says 78-year-old Bonnie Thurston on how much she can deadlift. Thurston says she’s been active her whole life, but never thought she would powerlift. Seven years ago, Thurston struggled with osteoporosis, a condition in which bones become weak and brittle, increasing risk of fractures. Then, Thurston found a powerlifting group for seniors. "I now weigh more than I weighed when I started this, but I wear the same size clothes, and the reason is I have stronger bones and larger bones and more muscle in my body than I did when I started this," she says. These group of seniors deadlift; they bench and they pull sleds. And while Thurston is doing all of this, she pushes 80. Thurston is not even the oldest person at the gym. Edith Murway-Traina is a member and is 97 years old. “I've always had muscles, I just had to learn to use them," she says. Bill Beekley leads the group. He's trained powerlifters since the 90s. "Don't be intimidated by what these ladies are doing, because they all started just moving their bodies," Beekley says. He says lifting correctly can help increase bone density and fight conditions like osteoporosis. It also helps these women in everyday life. "It's very functional,” the instructor says. “Some say they can carry their groceries a little easier now and don't need help getting groceries in an out of the car.” For 97-year-old Murway-Traina, she says that movement is so important as she nears 100. “The more you move, the more exercise you get, the more your body responds,” she says. Murway-Traina says she was nervous about the idea of powerlifting at first, but she now does it three times a week. "When you start being too old for something, you are too old for something, you have to know you are capable of doing what you want to make yourself do," Murway-Traina says. Research agrees. A JAMA study found physical activity in later life is linked to a lower risk of dying, even in older people who haven't been very active.Murway-Traina wants other seniors not to let the weight of getting older stop them from giving this a try. 2253

CHICAGO, Ill. – The fight against domestic violence has found a new warrior in a surprising place – the hair salon. And now, more and more states are looking to stylists to spot the signs of victimization. For Joan Rowan, who has been in the salon business for 44 years, the bond between hair stylist and client is strong. “It's a very intimate relationship,” said Rowan. Over the years, she says she’s heard the intimations many times before. “’He'd kill me if he knew how much money I spent. No, you can't cut my hair too short. My husband doesn't like it.’ Those kinds of answers. Suddenly you're asking them like are you OK?” It’s those in-chair conversations that drove her 20 years ago to start training her own staff to recognize the signs of domestic abuse. “They all knew stories and heard it all before. They had had clients who came bruised or hair missing,” said Rowan. Many clients she said appeared sad or afraid. In 2017, Illinois became the first state to require all cosmetologists and salon professionals to complete a one-hour, one-time education course on how to spot the signs of domestic violence and sexual assault. They look for evidence of physical abuse like bruises and cuts or outward behaviors like self-blame, sudden lifestyle changes, and irregular appointments. The law, which went into effect this year, impacted more than 84,000 licensed cosmetologists and estheticians in the state. “We are not trained as reporters or anything like that,” explained Rowan. “All we do is give them a phone number that they can call if they need help.” According to the Professional Beauty Association, Illinois, Arkansas and California, have already passed laws mandating domestic abuse training for cosmetology school students or current salon professionals. Since last year, another six including, Florida, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Texas, have attempted to pass similar legislation. For salon owner Susanne Post, it’s personal. “Part of my story is that I’m a survivor of domestic violence myself,” said Post. Two years ago, she helped create a domestic violence training program for Nashville stylists. She says she’s hopeful that her home state of Tennessee will pass a law similar to other states. "In Tennessee, we are the fifth in the nation at the rate that women are killed by men, which is just unbelievable,” she said. “It affects one in four women, and one in seven men.” Joan Rowan says she’s proud to have been part of genesis of the training and the laws that are now spreading to help protect both men and women. “It has saved lives,” Rowan said. “It's real. And it doesn't have to be. And we can all help people get out of trouble.” 2725

A Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper was terminated after being caught on video pulling a mask off of a protester's face.Trooper Harvey Briggs was terminated Friday for "unprofessional conduct."A video surfaced of him interacting with protester, Andrew Golden, on the State Capitol grounds. Golden was recording a traffic stop of a woman near the Capitol, during which the protester claims Briggs ripped the protester's face mask off and threw it on the ground.The Tennessee Highway Patrol released the following statement:Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Jeff Long and Tennessee Highway Patrol Colonel Dereck Stewart today announced that a trooper in the Capitol Protection Unit has been terminated following an internal investigation into department policy violations.Trooper Harvey Briggs, a 22-year veteran of the department was served a termination notice on Friday, August 14, 2020 for unprofessional conduct. The department placed Trooper Briggs on discretionary leave with pay on August 12, after the department opened an investigation into reported policy violations on August 11.It is the Department of Safety and Homeland Security’s policy to warn, suspend, demote or dismiss any employee whenever just or legal cause exists. It’s been a month since both of you went home to Paradise to be with Jesus. I spend most of my time imagining what both of you are seeing and experiencing. As my tears fall, I remind myself of what the apostle Paul said in first Thessalonians 4:13-14 NIV “Brothers and sisters we do not want you to be on uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him”. For me this is not the end but only a brief interruption. One day soon we will have a magnificent reunion and all of us will be with the Lord forever. Until then I will press on to the ultimate goal of spending eternity in Heaven. My family and I would like to thank everyone across this country who has prayed for us and sent words of encouragement our way.
