SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- San Diego County health officials this weekend reported 310 new COVID-19 cases and no additional deaths, raising the region's totals to 10,794 cases while the death toll remained at 338.The number of COVID-19 tests reported to the county Saturday was 4,413, with 7% positive new cases. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Superior Court officials warned the public Thursday about a scam targeting the Hispanic community in which a scammer reportedly threatens to arrest people unless they pay for items they never ordered.According to court officials, a woman recently showed up at court looking for a fictional courtroom number. She had been told there would be a hearing on her refusal to pay for items the scammer said she purchased.The woman was told to either pay ,500 or be taken to court. When she came to the courthouse, the woman discovered there was no such case and the threat was a scam.When court staff dialed the phone number provided to the potential victim, the person who answered said she would only speak in Spanish.Superior Court officials are now warning vulnerable non-English speakers about the scam."It appears these scammers are targeting members of the community they believe won't go to authorities or show up at a courthouse," said Executive Officer Michael Roddy. "It appears they believe they can just take the money and no one will report them."These scams happen every year; sometimes they tell people there are charges for failing to show up for jury services or charges for clearing up arrest warrants; this time it's charges for not paying for ordered items," Roddy said. "Once again, we want the public to know the court or law enforcement will not call you with this type of issue and court will never, ever demand cash as the way to make charges go away."The public is told to simply hang up or contact law enforcement if the scammer gets aggressive. 1604

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials Sunday reported 373 new cases of COVID-19 and no new deaths, bringing the county's totals to 52,355 and the death toll remaining at 853.Officials are imploring San Diegans to maintain vigilance as positive case rates for the coronavirus continue to increase in the region."We are now concerned about the trends and we are concerned about the likelihood we could tip back to purple, Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said on Twitter today. The county is now in the red tier and the limit for the next tier is seven cases per 100,000 residents.Fletcher pointed to positive unadjusted case rates over six days (Oct. 11-16): 6.9 out of 100,000 residents, to 7.2 to 7.3 to 7.4 to 7.7 and 7.8.The county will be in the red, or "substantial," tier for at least another two weeks.But Fletcher and Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten held an emergency meeting Friday to "sound the alarm" as the future case rate appears to cross into the purple tier of the state's four-tier reopening system.With the state's monitoring system having a seven-day lag, the adjusted case rate of positive COVID-19 tests is 6.8 per 100,000 residents, up from 6.5 in the previous assessment.Nearly all non-essential indoor businesses would close under the purple tier."We are still in the red tier, but it is too close for comfort," Wooten said.The California Department of Public Health will update the county's data Tuesday.One new community outbreak was confirmed Saturday in a business. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County schools are allowed to reopen for in-person teaching starting Tuesday, a day after a flurry of businesses throughout the county resumed indoor operations.Tuesday marks two weeks since San Diego County was removed from the state's COVID-19 watch list and nearly three weeks that the county's case rate has remained under 100 cases per 100,000 people.Remaining below that metric has paved the way for K-12 schools to reopen for in-person teaching, but many districts are expected to take a cautious approach to reopening.Schools that choose to reopen must follow state guidance, including mandatory face covering usage for students in third grade through high school, increased cleaning and disinfecting practices and implementing a six-foot distance requirement, where possible, in classrooms and non-classroom spaces.On Monday, San Diego County businesses including movie theaters, gyms, museums and hair and nail salons resumed indoor operations, with modifications, under newly issued state guidance. Restaurants, places of worship and movie theaters are only allowed up to 25% occupancy or 100 people -- whichever is less. Museums, zoos and aquariums are also required not to exceed 25% occupancy.Monday night, the county implemented a new policy that restaurant patrons sitting indoors must wear masks at all times, except when eating or drinking.
