"You might want to step back," said Darryl Clinton as yet another explosion boomed nearby. He seemed to know exactly what that sound meant. A fissure that violently cracked open the earth's surface was spewing more lava and, possibly, more lava bombs -- flying chunks of molten rock.Clinton spoke to CNN on Friday, while defending two homes in Pahoa roughly 100 yards from the unstable fissure that's been erupting for more than a week now.Even to get from one house to another takes a life-or-death game of frogger.Clinton pointed to the remains of one lava bomb purged from a nearby fissure that landed just inches from a friend's house. The yard was littered every few feet with with fallen lava, but Clinton wasn't worried about getting hit by the hunks of molten rock."It's almost like catching a football," Clinton said in describing how to avoid being hit. "But you don't want to catch this football."Armed with just a fire extinguisher and a garden hose, Clinton has been defending the homes that belong to friends. He's been spraying down the burning lava bombs that hit the houses to prevent them from catching fire. Heaps of flaming rock have already shattered windows and destroyed a septic tank -- setting it ablaze with a blue flame of burning methane gas.A day later, Clinton fell victim himself -- distracted by his cell phone for mere moments, when a bowling ball-sized lava bomb hit him in the leg while he was standing on the porch. His friend and ex-wife Lisa Roach was nearby and able to take him to the hospital. She had been helping him defend the homes -- the pair were keeping watch in shifts.Roach told CNN she believes the intense heat of the lava bomb actually cauterized the wound, preventing it from bleeding more than it did.The burning projectile also set Clinton's porch ablaze, but a neighbor managed to extinguish it. Clinton is currently in the hospital, recovering. Roach said he can already wiggle his toes, but won't be able to put weight on his injured foot for at least six weeks. He's had two surgeries already, and will likely have more, but is expected to recover. 2112

(AP) -- Rihanna‘s Clara Lionel Foundation is giving million to the response efforts against the coronavirus. The money will go to food banks, testing, healthcare worker training, virus prevention and distribution of critical respiratory supplies. In other entertainment news Saturday: Fashion designer Christian Siriano in a tweet vowed to make face masks, asking his sewing team to pump them out to help medical responders. And a revival of Edward Albee’s “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” will not reopen when Broadway resumes performances, a second play to call it quits as the theater world grapples with the coronavirus. 636

(CNN) -- A US Navy reconnaissance aircraft flying in international airspace over the Black Sea was intercepted by a Russian fighter jet Monday in an unsafe and unprofessional manner, according to three US defense officials and a statement from the Navy.During an encounter that lasted a total of 25 minutes, the Russian SU-27 jet passed directly in front of the US EP-3 aircraft at a high speed, the officials said. The US crew reported turbulence following that initial interaction in which the direct pass occurred. The SU-27 then made a second pass of the US plane and applied its afterburner while conducting a banking maneuver, which is believed to have caused a vibration that was experienced by the American crew."This interaction was determined to be unsafe due to the SU-27 conducting a high speed pass directly in front of the mission aircraft, which put our pilots and crew at risk. The intercepting SU-27 made an additional pass, closing with the EP-3 and applying its afterburner while conducting a banking turn away. The crew of the EP-3 reported turbulence following the first interaction, and vibrations from the second," according to a statement from the US Navy.Officials so far, have not been able to estimate how close the Russian aircraft came to the US plane, but described the flight behavior of the Russians as the key factor in making the determination the encounter was unsafe.US officials were not initially aware of whether the Russian aircraft was armed. The Navy EP-3 was operating out of Souda Bay, Greece, according to Pentagon spokesman Eric Pahon. The Navy plane had its transponder on for the duration of the mission but there was no communication established or attempted between the Russian and US aircraft, Pahon said.A Twitter account for the Russian embassy in the US posted a brief statement about the encounter on Monday saying the fighter jet "followed all necessary safety procedures.""The Su-27 jet's crew reported identifying the #US EP-3 Aries spy plane and accompanied it, preventing a violation of Russian airspace and followed all necessary safety procedures," the tweet said. The last reported unsafe intercept of a US Navy aircraft by a Russian jet occurred in January when a Russian Su-27 jet flew within five feet of a US Navy EP-3, forcing the Navy plane to fly through its jet wash. The US Navy deemed that intercept unsafe and unprofessional.Following that incident, the US State Department issued a statement accusing the Russians of "flagrantly violating existing agreements and international law."In May, a Russian Su-27 fighter jet performed an "unprofessional" intercept of a US Navy P-8 surveillance plane while it was flying in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.The Russian jet came within about 20 feet of the US aircraft, one official said, adding that the encounter lasted about nine minutes. That intercept was described by officials as safe but unprofessional, though a US Navy official told CNN that the Navy does not officially classify aerial encounters that way. The Navy classifies aviation intercepts simply as either safe or unsafe.The-CNN-Wire 3131

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Otay Mesa father and dog owner says he did a double-take after he says surveillance video revealed who was hurting his dog.Wherever Pupa the poodle mix goes, little Alfonso Jr., 3, and Regina, 1, usually follow. Their father, Alfonso Galindo, calls the 7-year-old rescue a beloved member of the family, which is why his recent discovery was so tough to swallow."It's heartbreaking," said Galindo. It all started when the strange stains that have been appearing for months appeared again last week in the patio of his home on Agosto Street. He checked his recently installed cameras and couldn't believe what he saw."I'm at a loss for words," said Galindo.Just after 11 a.m. last Tuesday, surveillance video shows a postal carrier walking up to Galindo's mailbox and past the metal front gate. Behind the gate is Pupa, and as the mail carrier places the mail in the mailbox, a cylindrical object is seen in his left hand. At the same time, from another camera, Pupa is seen behind the gate beginning to convulse for several minutes."The dog is withering in pain ... makes me sick to my stomach," said Galindo.Galindo said he searched through his videos -- about a month's worth --- and found nine similar incidents where his dog convulses after the postal carrier walks by. Galindo believes the mail carrier was casually and quickly spraying the pepper spray at Pupa's face."It's a total betrayal of the trust. You would think the Postal Service is somebody you can trust," said Galindo.Galindo went through the last few months in his mind. Pupa did sometimes turn up with red eyes, but it would always go away. But was someone else in the home hurt? In the last six months, both of Galindo's children -- who are constantly touching and hugging Pupa -- have developed mysterious respiratory problems."Countless trips to the ER and urgent care, and countless medications," said Galindo.Galindo now believes he knows the cause."I get livid thinking about it. This is the health of my children," said Galindo. He's filed a complaint with the U.S. Postal Service, along with a police report. "I believe what he's done to our family is criminal," said Galindo.A spokesperson with the San Diego District of the U.S. Postal Service issued this statement on the matter: 2289

With many Americans avoiding getting on board passenger jets amid the spread of coronavirus, United Airlines has a plan to continue operating some of its fleet of planes. United Airlines said that it is using some of its largest planes as cargo planes. United Airlines said the flights will be used to carry "critical goods."United said it is using its Boeing 777 and 787 fleet to run 40 charter flights each week, and is looking to add more routes. "Connecting products to people around the world is the United Cargo mission," said United Cargo President Jan Krems. "That role has never been more crucial than during the current crisis. Our team is working around the clock to provide innovative solutions for our customers and support the global community." 771
