SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Hazardous Materials Team is investigating a Rancho Bernardo residence following reports of a possible fentanyl overdose death at the home Thursday morning.Crews responded at around 4 a.m. to calls of an overdose at a residence at 11300 Calenda Road located a few blocks from Westwood Elementary School.First responders discovered an unconscious 27-year-old male. The victim was declared deceased at the scene, according to San Diego County Sheriff's Office officials. Neighbors told 10News the man lived at the home with his parents.While at the scene, our 10News crew saw a woman being escorted out of the house and placed in an ambulance. It’s still unclear how she’s involved.The San Diego County Medical Examiner will identify the man and confirm his cause of death. 800

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was stabbed to death in a Pacific Beach bathroom Sunday, and a man possibly linked to the incident was arrested, according to San Diego Police.SDPD officials said the stabbing was reported just after 7:30 p.m. in the 700 block of Grand Avenue as an assault with a deadly weapon with an injured man.Firefighters and lifeguards were the first arrive, and they found a 39-year-old white male bleeding from the upper torso in a men's bathroom, according to police. First aid was given within minutes and the man was taken to a hospital, but he died from his injuries.Police said witnesses reported seeing a man riding away from the scene on a bicycle immediately following the incident. A man matching witness descriptions was detained about a quarter-mile away from the scene and was questioned, according to SDPD officials.On Monday, officials announced 33-year-old Martin Alvarez was arrested and booked into County Jail on suspicion of murder.Police are not aware of any relationship between the victim and the suspect.Police are looking into whether cameras at nearby businesses have any video of the events surrounding the stabbing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A local high school teacher is using her classroom to foster conversations about social justice. In light of recent events, the community has stepped in to make sure the talks continue.Racism, diversity, and inclusion are just some of the words that sit on Jennifer Koller's vocabulary wall inside of her Steele Canyon High School classroom. Three years ago, she decided a class with those topics were needed for her students."The course was designed after years of watching the kids disconnect from the curriculum that didn't feel relevant to them," says Koller.With materials found at Teaching Tolerance, an aid for educators, it allowed her to shape the Literature and Social Justice course.It starts with identity, it moves to diversity, has justice, and ends with action," says Koller. "The last unit is when students really get to pick their own social justice issue and educate their classmates on something that's near and dear to their hearts."Recent Steele Canyon graduate, Tia Saunders, took Ms. Koller's course. She says it allowed students to have tough conversations, like race, with each other."It gave us all a chance to really just see everybody's side and truly pick whatever you want to do and understand why everybody thinks the way that they do," says Saunders.Koller says after seeing the recent events around San Diego and the country, following the death of George Floyd, she reached out to the community for help getting new anti-racism books for the class. The books were fully funded in less than two days."I feel my step into this next is to foster more intense and courageous conversations about race," says Koller. "I just wanted to start the new school year with ultimately the most relevant and interesting materials for the kids in my class."Students taking the Literature and Social Justice course will receive high school credit and credit towards admission to CSU and University of California schools. 1964

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego man has been sentenced to more than six years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple gun charges in a Tucson, Arizona federal court.Joshua Pratchard came to the FBI's attention after a short-lived attempt to join what prosecutors call a border militia group in Arizona in January 2018. The group kicked Pratchard out after just a few days, saying he did not want to follow their rules, including repeatedly asking to get physical with detainees and demanding to put a silencer on his weapon. He was also deemed eager for confrontations with criminal bandits known as "rip crews" who seek to steal drug loads in the desert.Pratchard continued to be involved in activity in Arizona, leading to contact with a member of the group who was a FBI informant. Pratchard revealed that he manufactured and sold weapons. The informant reported this to the FBI, which led to an investigation. Eventually, Pratchard was arrested after selling firearms to the informant. A search of Pratchard's apartment in Pacific Beach led to the discovery of a "gun factory." Along with the machinery to build firearms and bullets, agents found four homemade guns and enough gunpowder for 9,000 rounds of ammunition.The FBI investigation also discovered Pratchard's criminal history, which includes a conviction for having ecstasy when he was serving in the Marine Corps, and a 2007 felony assault conviction.Although he has been sentenced on the gun charges, Pratchard's legal trouble may not be over. During the sentencing hearing, prosecutors made multiple references to a non-profit organization Pratchard ran in San Diego which could see fraud charges filed in the future. 10News uncovered Pratchard's involvement leading a charity known as "Second Chance Fields," which is dedicated to rebuilding or refurbishing athletic fields at San Diego schools. His website touts to significant projects, including renovation of the baseball field at Mission Bay High School and a large-scale renovation of football and lacrosse facilities at Del Norte High School. For the latter project, Pratchard recruited former San Diego Padres star Adrian Gonzalez, who appeared at a press conference with Pratchard at the school and whose foundation donated ,000, according to the Second Chance Fields website.10News asked the FBI if there was an investigation underway into Pratchard and Second Chance Fields. A spokesperson responded that the Bureau could not confirm nor deny an investigation. 10News also left a message for Pratchard's attorney in Tucson. She did not call back as of air time. 2603

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new political party is accused of tricking some San Diego voters into joining them.San Diego Registrar of Voters' Michael Vu told 10News he has referred the matter to the District Attorney and the Secretary of State's Fraud Investigation Unit.The Common Sense Party was founded by former Republicans and is currently attempting to get the 67,000 signatures needed to appear on future ballots as an state-recognized political party. A co-founder told 10News the party hired a third-party company in San Diego to help gather the signatures.RELATED: Early voting begins in California Primary as San Diego County sends out mail ballotsHowever, as first uncovered in an investigation by 10News media partner KPBS, dozens of San Diego voters who are registered for the Common Sense Party say they did not remember signing up and, in fact, had not even heard of the party.Some said the signature gatherer told them they were signing a housing petition. Others said they were given a voter registration form that did not include a place to indicate party preference. When KPBS obtained the form that had been filed by the signature party gatherer for one of the voters, she said she hadn't made any changes. "Oh, no. This is not something I recognize. That is not my handwriting. I don't remember signing this form out," SDSU student Kameron Dollinger said.Julie Meier Wright, a well known civic and political leader who helped found the Common Sense Party, told 10News they are shocked by the accusations and are working to get to the bottom of what happened. 10News left a voice mail for the signature gathering company, but has not heard back.Vu urges all San Diegans to check their registration online before going to vote, in order to ensure that they will get the proper ballot. 1805
