The year 2018 may have started like every year, but as we close out the year, we are reminded of some big events that took place. Ten were killed at Santa Fe High School in Texas, and 11 people were killed at a Pittsburgh synagogue. These events are just a few that sparked the familiar debate of gun violence in America. Mother Nature also left her mark on 2018. Strong hurricanes hit the Florida Panhandle and the Carolinas. Wildfires caused deadly damage in California. Notable people died in 2018. We lost icons like Senator John McCain, First Lady Barbara Bush and President George H.W. Bush. As for politics, it was heated and loud. New Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh faced allegations of sexual assault, dating back to his high school days. The Democrats took the house in the Midterms, but the Senate stayed with the GOP. Some outrageous moments of the year: Roseanne made a short-lived comeback. Her racist tweets got her character killed off her own show. And we can’t forget about the Tide Pod challenge, that brought serious health concerns as teens ate detergent pods as a joke. A Green Beret who served multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan died Saturday during combat operations in Afghanistan, according to US Army special operations spokesman Lt. Col. Loren Bymer.Sgt. Maj. James G. "Ryan" Sartor, 40, was from Teague, Texas, and was assigned to the 10th Special Forces Group. He died during combat in northern Afghanistan's Faryab province, which borders Turkmenistan."We're incredibly saddened to learn of Sgt. Maj. James 'Ryan' Sartor's passing in Afghanistan. Ryan was a beloved warrior who epitomized the quiet professional," said Col. Brian R. Rauen, the commander of 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne). "He led his soldiers from the front and his presence will be terribly missed."The US invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 and has had a significant military presence there since, stretching over three presidencies. More than 2,000 US military personnel have died in what is the longest war in American history.Sartor's death comes just weeks after two US soldiers were killed by small arms fire in Afghanistan's Uruzgan province."I think this drives home the need for us to be successful with the missions that we have undertaken in Afghanistan as a reconciliation to reduce the level of violence, to reduce the level of risk to Afghans broadly, and the risk to American service members," Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said at the time.Overall, the US has about 14,000 troops in Afghanistan, where they primarily advise Afghan forces who are battling the Taliban.Sartor joined the Army in June 2001 and deployed to Iraq as an infantryman in 2002. A man is accused of setting fire to cardboard that a homeless man was sleeping under in Southern California. The Glendale Police Department says 32-year-old Richard Smallets intentionally set the fire on a sidewalk near a popular shopping center on Sept. 12. Police responded to the scene at about 1:22 a.m. to assist firefighters called to extinguish the fire. An investigation revealed the homeless man was awoken by the odor of smoke, realized the cardboard above him was on fire and unsuccessfully attempted to put out the flames with bottled water. Later that afternoon, police say detectives retrieved video surveillance from a nearby business that captured a man intentionally lighting the cardboard on fire and then taking photos. Officers later came in contact with Smallets at nearby Central Park. After questioning, he was identified as the suspect and subsequently placed under arrest on an arson charge. The next day, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed an attempted murder charge against Smallets. His bail has been set at million. The motive behind the crime is unknown at this time. 1133

A bench warrant was issued for singer R. Kelly after he failed to appear at a court hearing Thursday, the Hennepin County Attorney's Office in Minnesota said.Kelly, whose legal name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, was expected at the Hennepin County District Court, spokesman Chuck Laszewski said.In the two-minute hearing, senior Hennepin County Attorney Judith Cole said no attorney had approached her office or filed a certificate of representation for Kelly.The singer is facing two counts of engaging in prostitution with a person under 8 in Minnesota, officials said.A bench warrant makes it non-voluntary for Kelly to show up in court next time.A criminal complaint details an incident that occurred in July 2001 after a minor asked the singer for an autograph at a promotional event.Kelly gave the girl, then 17, his autograph and a phone number, the complaint states. When she called, she was directed to his hotel in Minneapolis and was met by someone she believed was a male member of his staff.The complaint says that when she met Kelly, the two made small talk before he gave her 0 to dance for him. After settling on the amount, she agreed. He took off her clothes and then his, and he touched her sexually while she danced, the documents say.He gave the victim VIP tickets to his concert, the complaint says. That enabled her to attend the 18+ concert without paying or showing her ID.Kelly faces separate charges in Illinois and New York.The Illinois US attorney's office told the Hennepin County Attorney's Office that it will not make Kelly available to the county until after his federal case is finished, Cole said.Kelly is being held in the Federal Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago on federal sex crime charges.Kelly's initial trial date on 13 federal charges in Illinois has been set for April 27, 2020. 1846
