SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Health officials Wednesday reported seven more deaths in San Diego County due to influenza complications last week, bringing this flu season's death toll to 42.The seven residents were between the ages of 53 and 90 and all had additional medical issues. Only two of them had been vaccinated, according to the county Health and Human Services Agency. At this time last flu season, the county had received reports of 281 deaths due to flu complications.The county also saw a new weekly high for lab-confirmed flu cases at 545, according to the HHSA's weekly flu report. The county has recorded 5,486 confirmed flu cases so far this flu season, a far cry from the 17,397 reported at this time last flu season. County health officials touted the data in the weekly flu report as evidence that the current flu season may still be cresting."Influenza is still widespread in the region and continues to sicken San Diegans," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "Anyone who has not yet had a flu vaccine this season should get it now."County health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention strongly advise the annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older, especially demographics with a heightened risk of serious complications, such as pregnant women, people older than 65 and people with chronic conditions. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Lemon Grove man who aimed a laser pointer at a San Diego police helicopter during a police protest this summer is facing a maximum possible sentence of five years in prison following his conviction by a federal jury, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Thursday.Rudy Alvarez, 25, was found guilty by a jury in San Diego federal court late Wednesday for shining a laser at the SDPD chopper around 8:30 p.m. June 4 in the area of 500 University Ave.The U.S. Attorney's Office said Alvarez shined the laser at the chopper multiple times over the course of an hour as he marched with protesters through downtown San Diego.The count of aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft carries a maximum possible sentence of five years in prison and a 0,000 fine. Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 22.U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer called the result "a very important verdict" and said "This kind of crime could have a disastrous impact if a pilot's sight is compromised. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities reached out to the public today for help in identifying two thieves who robbed a 19-year-old woman at Fashion Valley mall two weeks ago.The pair, a man and woman who appeared to be in their 20s or early 30s, grabbed the victim from behind as she was walking through a parking structure at the Friars Road shopping center shortly before 2 p.m. Aug. 10, according to San Diego police.As the man pressed a sharp object -- believed to have been a knife -- to the victim's back, his cohort demanded her cellphone and other property, then tried to pull a lanyard from around her neck.The victim slapped the other woman's hand away, preventing her from stealing the strap, but the man was able to yank a pair of Apple AirPods from the victim's ears. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man suspected of fatally shooting the mother of his infant son along with the child's grandmother at the women's Otay Mesa home over the weekend has been found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in Baja California, authorities said Tuesday.Mexican authorities found the body of 31-year-old Justice Love Peace in a vehicle on Monday, according to San Diego police. His death is believed to have been a suicide.Peace, also known as Jeremiah Alfred Horton, allegedly killed 37-year-old Elizabeth Stolz and her 65-year-old mother, Debora, during a custody dispute that erupted Sunday after he arrived at their residence in the 4300 block of Ebersole Drive to pick up the baby for visitation."This appears to be a tragic case of domestic violence," San Diego Police Lt.
