The outcome of the presidential election remained in doubt one day after polls closed throughout the United States. As of Wednesday afternoon, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden had a slight advantage over President Donald Trump in electoral college votes, but several key swing states had yet to be called.A candidate needs 270 electoral college votes in order to claim the presidency. As of Wednesday afternoon, Biden had 248 Electoral College votes to Trump's 214.Just as it did in 2016, the outcome of the race will likely hinge on the results of three states — Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. As of Wednesday afternoon, the race in Michigan and Pennsylvania is too close to call. The Associated Press projects Biden will win Wisconsin, and its 10 electoral votes. Michigan (16 electoral votes) appears poised to offer close to a final count in the hours ahead. However, officials in Pennsylvania have cautioned that due to a high volume of mail-in votes, it may take several days to determine a winner of their 20 electoral votes. In 2016, Trump won Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin by about 100,000 combined votes.During a virtual press conference on Wednesday, the state's chief election official, Meagan Wolfe, said that nearly all jurisdictions have posted initial vote counts. That count will remain unofficial until the election is certified on Dec. 1.Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien said in a statement Wednesday that the President plans to request a recount in Wisconsin.According to Wisconsin law, a candidate can request a recount if the margin of victory is within 1%. Those recounts are held at the county level. The western swing state of Nevada (six electoral votes) also remained too close to call. Nevada won't resume counting ballots until Thursday morning, and still needs to tally mail ballots received on Election Day. The state expanded mail-in voting for the 2020 election and will also continue to count mail-in ballots for the next week. Finally, though the majority of votes have been counted in Georgia (16 electoral college votes) and North Carolina (15 votes), the margins remain razor-thin. Trump currently holds narrow leads in both states. The state of Alaska, whose polls closed at midnight ET, also remains too close to call, but polling has indicated that Trump is favored in the state. In a virtual press conference on Wednesday morning, Biden campaign manager Jen O'Malley Dillon said her campaign is "on track" to claim the presidency. She said the Biden campaign believes it will prevail in Michigan, Wisconsin and Nevada, citing large numbers of outstanding mail-in ballots, which tend to skew Democratic.Though Michigan, Nevada and Wisconsin are yet to be called, should Biden claim those three states, he would reach the threshold of 270 electoral college votes needed to clinch the presidency. The Biden campaign also decried Trump's decision to falsely declare victory in a White House speech early Wednesday morning. In a statement, Biden campaign manager Jen O'Malley Dillon called Trump's comments "outrageous, unprecedented and incorrect." 3113

The head of United States Customs and Border Protection said border agents "prevented a dangerous situation getting worse" when they fired tear gas at a group of migrants who rushed the US-Mexico border Sunday.CBP Commissioner Kevin McAleenan told reporters Monday that as many as 1,000 people that were part of a migrant caravan traveling through Central America and Mexico sought to enter the US illegally. He said that according to CBP's initial report, 69 people were apprehended entering the US. McAleenan said he was not aware of any successful illegal entries by caravan members into the US."[CBP] effectively managed an extremely dangerous situation involving over 1,000 individuals who sought to enter the US unlawfully in large groups. They did so safely and without any reported serious injuries on either side of the border," McAleenan said.Sunday's incident marked an escalation of tensions that have been mounting since groups of Central American migrants began arriving in Tijuana a few weeks ago on their journey to attempt to gain entry to the US. The incident began with a march to the border that organizers said would be peaceful. In response, CBP deployed additional personnel to San Ysidro, California, on Sunday in expectation of demonstrations on both sides of the border.McAleenan said individuals breached the border fence to the east of San Ysidro and some went west and sought to enter through the Tijuana River channel. He described "assaultive behavior" by some migrants in both locations. Border Patrol agents countered using "less lethal devices," which included tear gas and "other projectiles," but not rubber bullets. He said CBP does not have rubber bullets in its inventory on the border.McAleenan said, per protocol, the decision to fire was made by agents on the scene using their professional judgment, and also per protocol the incident will be reviewed. He also described CBP as having responded with use of force to primarily adult males throwing rocks. However, video of the scene also showed a cloud of tear gas that sent people running and screaming, including families with young children.Four agents were hit with rocks, but because of their protective gear they were not seriously injured, McAleenan said.Sunday's melee closed one of the world's busiest international crossings, San Ysidro Port of Entry, near San Diego, to vehicle and pedestrian traffic for several hours. By Sunday afternoon, CBP reopened crossing lanes in both directions to pedestrians and vehicles. On the other side of the border in Mexico, Tijuana police had arrested 39 people by Sunday night, the agency said on Facebook. 2651

The oldest industry in the world is merging with the modern world as technology is helping farmers and making farms more sustainable.Farming has always been a part of Ranveer Chandra's life. When he was a kid, memories were made on his family's farm in India.“Back then, every summer and winter vacation, I would spend my time there. I didn’t like agriculture back then, the farms didn’t have electricity or toilets. That exposed me to a lot of poverty, a lot of primitive forms of agriculture that was practiced in different parts of the world,” Chandra said. Now with a Ph.D. in computer science, he's directed that interest and curiosity toward a program within Microsoft that he leads called FarmBeats."Through this project, we want to build digital tools that can empower farmers worldwide, make their lives better, make the food they produce better,” Chandra said.Like its name, FarmBeats is centered around farms. Chandra and his team are working to bring computers and their data to farms. What if you could bring all the benefits of things like artificial intelligence, cutting edge computing and the latest digital tech to agriculture? Imagine just how it could improve a farmer's life and work.“Humans and machines need to work together. All the latest technologies we’re building when combined with human knowledge you can take them to a completely different level,” Chandra said. That next level is evident in a new partnership between Land O'Lakes and Microsoft.“Imagine a computer sitting in the barn, getting a lot of data from cameras and sensors so it can detect how the different cows are doing, whether it’s sick and in heat, what’s happening with each cow,” Chandra said. But, none of that can happen unless there's broadband. Enter in the "digital divide" which has become even more apparent during the pandemic. Land O'Lakes wants to not only bring that new tech to farmers, but bring everyone online at the same time.“A lot of our solutions were not working as well as they should have because of the connectivity issue. It hit us right in the face we’re talking about some really neat capabilities and technologies but we couldn’t use them because we didn’t have that connectivity in rural America,” said Teddy Bekele, chief technology officer at Land O'Lakes.Land O'Lakes, which brings you butter, milk and cheese, is also a farmer-owned cooperative with 2,000 dairy producers, 1,000 retailers and 300,000 farmers.“Having one farmer connected is not enough,” Bekele said, “you’ve got to have the whole community connected and if you think about bringing technology, it’s not just the household. We want the whole field.”He says drone footage bringing you data about your fields does not work if you don't have internet.“We’ve been working on a lot of novel solutions to bring to farmers, things from remote sensing, satellite and drone images to using crop models that use machine learning capabilities to help farmers make better decisions as well as a platform that helps with sustainability,” Bekele said.Farmers know so much about land. Technology will take the guesswork out of the farming industry. Things like how much you should water, when and where mapped out by data.“One of the things we’re building is a digital dairy platform, bringing different dairy management tools into one umbrella. You can have one place where you can get all the data and then start using it to create insights” says Chandra. And while data-driven solutions for a modern world won't happen overnight, the two companies are aiming at a worldwide agriculture transformation in a few years, in hopes of forever changing our food supply, our food system and our sustainability. 3691
