SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Homicide investigators have been assigned to look into a deadly fire in Logan Heights that claimed three lives. According to the San Diego Police Department, the investigators have been assigned “out of an abundance of caution.”Investigators will work closely with the metro arson strike team also looking into the incident, the department says. The fire started at a home on the 3100 block of Clay Street around 4:30 a.m. Sunday. 44-year-old Jose Romero died at the scene while his wife and daughter, 46-year-old Nicolasa Maya-Romero and 21-year-old Iris Romero died at the hospital in the days following the blaze. The family’s 23-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son remain in the hospital. The family’s oldest son, a 26-year-old, was unharmed in the fire. The 26-year-old said he awoke Sunday morning to find his bed on fire. The man told 10News he tried yelling at his family to get out of the home."My dogs were jumping on me, trying to wake me up. I woke up. When I woke up, my bed was on fire. I jumped out of bed and started screaming the house is on fire," said Wilber Romero.According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, firefighters had to go inside the home to pull many of the victims out.A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family with funeral expenses. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- From big box stores to locally based companies, a number of businesses in San Diego County are significantly scaling up their workforces to meet the demand caused by the coronavirus.Walmart, the nation’s largest employer, plans to hire 150,000 associates by May, including 6,200 in California. The company has boosted pay and bonuses, raising e-commerce employee wages by an hour as online orders surge. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Hundreds of residents at “The Cliffs” mobile home park in Allied Gardens are fed up after living without running water since Thursday. The community consists solely of 55+ senior citizens, and many of them live alone or have limited mobility. "It's really kind of a pain in the neck,” 85-year-old resident William Shakespeare said. Like many of his neighbors living in the lower portion of the Cliffs, Shakespeare lost water since early Thursday. Luckily for him, his longtime girlfriend Suiko Paul is quite mobile. She became the go-to person for water supply for the entire street. "Elderly people live here. They don't drive. Somebody has to help them,” Paul said. She was been swamped. "She hauls water like crazy,” laughed Shakespeare. 10News met the on-site property manager as he and two others were digging a hole in the asphalt. He stepped away from the camera to tell us two old pipes burst on opposite ends of the mobile home park Thursday morning. Since then, he said he had been doing everything he can to fix the problem. But residents like Shakespeare and Paul did not want to see three people trying to fix a major water leak problem affecting more than 200 residents. "He's been here since Thursday, and they've been digging, but they're not sure where they're digging,” Shakespeare said. Many residents appreciated that the manager was trying to handle the problem himself, but they said it had gotten out of control. Like many of her neighbors, Paul said she had not taken a shower for four days, and she had gone to a friend’s house to wash dishes.The Red Cross began mobilizing at the clubhouse and doing door to door well-fare checks. But for many of the seniors, patience is running out."It seems like forever…. Not having water, I don't know what could be worse. Not having air, I guess,” Shakespeare said. The city is aware of the problem. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Dominic Pizarro lost his mom and his little sister on Thursday, after a wrong-way driver drove into their SUV on Interstate 805. Pizarro spoke with 10News as he and his grandfather drove back to San Diego to support Dominic's older brother - who was the first to hear the tragic news. Trevor Heitmann, 18, was behind the wheel of the 2014 McLaren?sports car that collided with the SUV, killing himself, and 43-year-old Aileen Pizarro and her 12-year-old daughter, Aryana. "Both of them were the most caring...people full of life, you've ever met in the world," Pizarro said. The way his mother and sister died has dominated local news outlets since it happened.Heitmann was traveling at high speeds Thursday, heading southbound in a northbound HOV lane at about 4:30 p.m. near La Jolla Village Dr. before the collision, CHP said. Troopers believe he entered via an HOV lane access at Carol Canyon Rd. Pizarro said his family was as close as can be - the siblings were all musicians. "(Aryana) was just the most unique little girl in the whole wide world," he said. "She was your average girly girl at times, and at times she was this feisty little 12-year-old who was just so smart, so mature for her age."The siblings were raised by their mom and grandfather. Their mom Aileen was a therapist devoted to helping others.  "Everything (my mom and grandpa) had went to us," Pizarro said. "Every single dollar, every single cent was put into me and my brother and sister."Pizarro said the family will never forget their caring mother and feisty sister, as he also recalled the last conversation he had with Aryana. "She was showing me all these unicorn things she got, unicorn pencils, unicorn notebooks," he said. "She was showing me everything that she was going to wear or take to school because she was so proud of everything that mom had gotten her for school."Aryana was set to start seventh grade at the School of Creative and Performing Arts on Monday.Pizarro set up a GoFundMe page to support the family during this tough time, but also asked those aware of the story for their prayers.  2175

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Faith and community leaders and former gang members from across San Diego are calling on gangs to agree to “A Season of Peace.”They're asking for no gunfire from Thanksgiving (Nov. 26) through January 1, 2021.With the coronavirus disrupting traditional violence intervention efforts, there has been a rise in gang and gun violence. According to SANDAG's 2019 report on homicides in the San Diego region, a firearm was used in 55% of homicides. Also, firearms were used 100% of the time in gang-involved homicides. Compared to mid-year 2019, there were a greater number of homicides -- 37% increase -- reported to law enforcement in the San Diego region from January to June of 2020. Since SANDAG reported on homicides for that time period, gun violence and homicides continue to rise.During the Season of Peace campaign, community leaders will lead community walks of peace, organize street-side memorial services, ceasefire agreements with gang leaders, and host a tree planting in honor of those who've died because of community violence.Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Community Assistant Support Team (CAST) will follow the advice of health officials, collaborate with law enforcement and politicians to ensure everyone's safety.For the past eight years, CAST has brought quality community service to families impacted by gun violence with de-escalation support, conflict resolution, retaliation prevention, and in hospital spiritual care.
