This landlocked state shouldn't have any islands. But the deadly flooding that has deluged parts of Nebraska could get worse before it gets better."This really is the most devastating flooding we've probably ever had in our state's history, from the standpoint of how widespread it is," Gov. Pete Ricketts said Monday.More than 8 million people are under flood warnings in the Midwest and the Mississippi River Valley, said CNN meteorologist Dave Hennen."Eastern Nebraska remains the hardest hit area, with much of the southeast part of the state under flood warnings," he said. The flooding has already killed two people in Nebraska and one man in Iowa. Ricketts said at least one person remains missing in Nebraska.Flood records have been shattered in 17 places, and more rivers will likely break cresting records this week, according to the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency. (A crest is the highest point of a flood wave.)Now the big concern is floodwater draining downstream, further deluging communities that can't take any more water.3 deaths include a farmer trying to rescue othersNebraskan James Wilke, a farmer in Platte County, used his tractor to try to help a person trapped in a vehicle, NEMA spokesman Mike Wight said."With the guidance of emergency responders, James drove his tractor over the Shell Creek bridge on the Monestary Road and the bridge gave out. James and the tractor went down into the flood water below," family friend Jodi L. Hefti wrote on Facebook.Another Nebraska man died after he was overcome by flood waters near a dam in Spencer, Wight said.He said one more person in Nebraska is missing and presumed dead.In Iowa, Aleido Rojas Galan of Nebraska was one of three people rescued from floodwater, Iowa's Fremont County Sheriff's Office said. But Galan, 55, succumbed to his injuries and died at a hospital in Lincoln. This nightmare started with a 'bomb cyclone' The mammoth flooding follows a powerful "bomb cyclone" that slammed the central US last week with hurricane-like winds and blizzard conditions.Melting snow ended up in rivers and streams, causing flooding and cresting days after the precipitation was over.Nebraska's Offutt Air Force Base, just south of Omaha, said about 30 buildings were hit with floodwater."Team Offutt has done an incredible job working together to battle this historic flood as best we can," said Col. Michael Manion, 55th Wing commander. On Sunday, he said the 2449
The start of the school year can bring up some mixed emotions: excitement and anxiety.Four-year-old Vivienne Villa is ready to make new friends and show off some of her back-to-school gear when she starts kindergarten next week. Her mom, Priya, knows the big jump from preschool to kindergarten can be tough on a kid."She's been home with me the last two years and it's just been us during the day, so it'll be a big transition," Villa said.Increased work load, longer days, and more time away from mom and dad can add on stress for children. When Villa dropped her son off at Kindergarten a few years ago, she learned that confidence can be contagious."What really worked is I wouldn't linger when I said goodbye. I said have a great day, I can't wait for you to tell me about it, and then I would leave," Villa added.Dr. Beth Creel, the Director of the Behavioral Health Department at the Children's Heart Center in Las Vegas, says Priya is right. Kids can pick up on our emotions, so it's a good idea to try to keep a level head.Dr. Creel says children can get anxious ahead of the school year because of the uncertainty and lack of control. Creating an eating and sleeping schedule and sticking to it ahead of the school year can help them feel more prepared for a busy school year.To ease separation anxiety, Dr. Creel suggests sneaking a family picture or a sweet note into your child's backpack or lunch box."Something to show that after an eight hour day, a five hour day, a four hour day, there is still that connection and mommy and daddy aren't going anywhere," Dr. Creel said. When children get home, open communication is crucial, but sometimes what your child doesn't say is more telling."Sometimes it's a red flag. Why don't they want to talk about that? That's something that I think parents have to also keep in mind. Pay attention to the silence as well," Dr. Creel said.Homework can be a daunting task for the start of the school year. If a child is overwhelmed by their school work Dr. Creel suggests creating a work space for the individual child that is organized and away from distractions. If back-to-school shopping is in the budget, Dr. Creel says buying something new that your child can give an uneasy child an extra confidence boost. 2272

They're slobbery. They have funny fur. They don't look like standard pups. But boy, are they cute for being so ugly — and that's the point. The 2019 World's Ugliest Dog Contest in Petaluma, California, took place Friday night with 19 good boys and girls up for the title. The annual contest recruits pooches from across the nation to compete for cash, a trophy and, of course, the crowning achievement of being the world's ugliest dog.The contest isn't about shaming dogs for their looks though. It's meant to promote pet adoption from shelters, and to show people that all dogs are deserving of love — no matter how they look. This year's winner hailed from Santa Rosa, California. Scamp the Tramp took home ,500 in cash, another ,500 to donate to an animal shelter and a shiny trophy. He and his human, Yvonne Morones, also won an appearance on the "Today" show.“He’s Scamp the Champ, no longer Scamp the Tramp,” Morones 937
