SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A DUI/Driver's License checkpoint in the Mission Bay area of San Diego resulted in 11 arrests, police said Saturday morning.More than 660 vehicles went through the checkpoint at 2600 Ingraham St., between 11:20 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday and nearly 600 of those vehicles were screened, according to Officer Mark McCullough of the San Diego Police Department.Of the vehicles screened, 18 drivers were evaluated and 11 were arrested on suspicion of DUI in or near the checkpoint, including one driver who was taken into custody after he failed to stop for the checkpoint and crashed his vehicle, McCullough said.Police also cited seven drivers for unspecified violations and impounded nine vehicles.Another checkpoint is scheduled for Saturday, but the time and location were not immediately disclosed. 836

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A Navy SEAL committed murder during a deployment to Iraq and the proof is in his own words, his own photos and the testimony of his fellow troops, a military prosecutor told a jury Monday.Cmdr. Jeff Pietrzyk said in closing arguments of a court-martial that text messages by Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher show he is guilty of fatally stabbing a wounded Islamic State prisoner on May 3, 2017.One message said: "I've got a cool story for you when I get back. I've got my knife skills on." Another text stated: "Good story behind this. Schwartz Federal Office Building in downtown San Diego will result in a 21-month closure of a portion of Front Street, beginning Saturday.According to the U.S. General Services Administration, a two-block stretch of Front Street, between Broadway and West F Street, will be affected by the construction project, which is expected to last until June 2021. Pedestrian and vehicle traffic will be detoured around the project area.The project will reinforce and enhance the Front Street underpass beneath the Schwartz Federal Building. The project is designed to increase safety for the building's occupants as well as pedestrians and motorists, according to the GSA.The Federal Building's existing framing at the underpass will be reinforced with new steel beams, concrete paneling and column support structures, federal officials said.Signs will be in place on Interstate 5 to alert motorists to the closure as they enter downtown. The easternmost lane of Front Street between Broadway and E Street will provide access to the underground parking garage at 101 West Broadway and for turning city buses.Construction work hours will be from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. except on weekends and holidays.The roadwork will be completed first, followed by pedestrian walkways with full-height walls to separate the road from walkways, according to the GSA."One of our strategic goals is better management of federal real estate and this GSA construction project allows for that while also being a catalyst for downtown revitalization," said GSA Regional Administrator Tom Scott. SAN DIEGO (AP) — A Marine who worked jointly in Iraq with a decorated Navy SEAL accused of murder testified Thursday that the SEAL did not stab a teenage Islamic State prisoner in his care.Marine Staff Sergeant Georgio Kirylo said that he did not see stab wounds on the neck of the dead captive when he moved the body to position it for a so-called "trophy" photo.Kirylo took the stand in the San Diego court-martial of SEAL Chief Edward Gallagher, who is accused of fatally stabbing the adolescent militant in 2017. Gallagher, 40, has pleaded not guilty to murder and attempted murder.His statements followed testimony of an Iraqi general who said he was with the prisoner until he died, and that he did not see Gallagher stab him.Two SEALs previously testified that they saw Gallagher plunge a knife into the prisoner's neck. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A body was found today alongside Interstate 5 in Sherman Heights.A 911 caller reported the discovery next to the northbound lanes of the freeway near Island Avenue about 11:45 a.m. according to the San Diego Police Department. The person's gender and approximate age were not immediately released.After confirming the death, SDPD officers turned the case over to the California Highway Patrol, since the spot where the body was found is within the state agency's jurisdiction.There were no immediate indications of criminal involvement in connection with the fatality. 594
