BEIJING, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said here Wednesday that President Hu Jintao's upcoming visit to Japan would have a profound impact on bilateral strategic and reciprocal relations.     "President Hu's trip is a great event in Sino-Japanese relations in the new period," Xi told visiting Yoshinobu Ishikawa, governor of Shizuoka Prefecture in Japan.     Xi said this trip would promote mutual understanding and friendship as well as substantial cooperation between the two countries.     He expected the two countries to seize the chance to become good neighbors and partners featuring peaceful existence, long-term friendship, reciprocal cooperation and common prosperity. BEIJING, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Friday went to Beichuan County of Mianyang City to visit people affected by the southwest China earthquake, encouraging them to be confident in overcoming hardships caused by the disaster.      Hu first visited quake victims in Shengli Village, Leigu Town of Beichuan. More than 1,000 out of the 18,000 population in Leigu Town died or were missing in the quake. The survivors who had been rescued must be transferred to safer places in time, and children who lost their parents and elders who lost their family members in the quake must be properly cared for.     Also Friday morning, Premier Wen Jiabao told Chinese media on a train in Sichuan that saving lives remained the top priority almost four days after the quake.     "We won't give up if there is even the slightest hope of finding more survivors," he said.     The death toll from the powerful earthquake rose to 22,069 nationwide as of 2 p.m. Friday, while 168,669 people were injured, according to the emergency response office of the State Council.

BUCHAREST, May 6 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin said here Monday that China and Romania share the same task of opening up a new era in their all-round partnership of friendship and cooperation.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top political consultative body, delivered a speech at a session of the Romanian Senate on Monday evening.     In his speech, Jia explained China's policy and concept of peaceful development and mutually beneficial, win-win cooperation with other countries. He emphasized the willingness to further deepen friendship between China and Romania and advance China's relations with Central and Eastern Europe in an all-round way. They should continue to respect and treat each other as equals, never interfere in each other's internal affairs and pay attention to each other's concern. They should maintain high-level contact and carry out even closer exchanges and cooperation between their governments, legislatures and political parties so as to lay a solid political foundation for sustained development of bilateral links.     Secondly, the two countries should expand trade and economic cooperation. They should expand trade and investment according to the principle of mutual complementarity, equality and mutual benefits. They should continue to give a full play to the role of their joint economic commission, encourage and support their companies to increase contact and explore new ways and methods of cooperation.     Thirdly, the two countries should deepen cultural and humanitarian exchanges. They should continue exchanges and cooperation in such fields as culture, science, technology, education, sports, public health and tourism so as to add new content to bilateral links. They should further expand people-to-people exchanges, exchanges among local authorities and young people so as to consolidate the foundation of China-Romania friendship and add vigor to the development of bilateral links.     Fourthly, the two countries should step up coordination and cooperation on international issues. They should join effort to build a fair, unbiased and rule-based multi-lateral system with the United Nations assuming the core role.     Jia said China-Romania friendship is deep-rooted and fruitful and will enjoy an even better future. He called for the people of the two countries to join hands in strengthening their traditional friendship and all-round cooperation.     Jia arrived in Bucharest Sunday for a four-day official goodwill visit to Romania. Romania is the first leg of his four-nation Europe tour, which will also take him to Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia.

You have been on the frontline to assist quake victims when bearing great pains of losing the beloved. All of us should learn from you."     A day after the quake, Jiang learnt that ten members of her family living in Beichuan county, one of the worst-hit areas, passed away including her only daughter.     She was working as a police officer in the neighboring city Pengzhou.     "I felt that the sky was falling. I can't believe that. I had just talked with my baby girl on phone a day ago," she once recalled the dark moment in an interview.     But Jiang did not leave her post as more and more displaced people came to Pengzhou from quake-hit areas and the police had to help them settle down. In the week following the earthquake, she had worked at temporary shelter camps and barely slept until she fainted on the spot and was sent to hospital.     Jiang has showed the best of Chinese police officers, Zhou said.     He hoped that local police officers and those from other parts of China to assist quake relief would stick to such a noble spirit to work together and well serve their duty in a bid to help create a stable society in the quake-affected areas.     Jiang said she would not fail the Party and people's expectation and work harder in her own post.
