While many businesses shut down temporarily due to COVID-19, zoos and aquariums couldn’t fully close because animals still need to be taken care of.However, with little to no visitors during what’s normally the busiest time of the year, some are facing tough times and getting creative.“It’s a lot of work,” said Patty Wallace, an Animal Keeper at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.“We feed all of them about three times a day, about 40 pounds each of grass hay, about six pounds of grain per hippo, and also some fruits and vegetables for training and nourishment. So they get lots of variety,” Wallace explained. That’s just the hippos, which are part of a new exhibit the zoo opened during the shutdown.“Opening a brand new exhibit is normally hard enough,” said Bob Chastain, the President and CEO of the zoo.With large groups and traditional presentations considered unsafe, the zoo pivoted. “Now, what we do instead is we’re grabbing random people and taking them back behind the scenes, letting them help us with the everyday things we’re doing,” Chastain said.Letting kids help feed the hippos and other animals, up close and personal.“We are trying to adjust and we would like to share our hippos,” Wallace said. “But because we don’t want crowds, we do it in small bursts.”Back in spring, zoos and aquariums were told to close.“All of them have had a period of two to four months of closure. Some are still closed,” said Dan Ashe, President and CEO of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. AZA is a nonprofit that represents over 240 of these businesses.“When they’re closed they’re not really closed, because they have to continue caring for the animals,” Ashe said. That’s what makes zoos and aquariums unique.“The essential ingredient in success is a guest,” he said. Even with no guests, the work doesn’t stop, which has put some in financial distress. “We have had some that have been on the verge of closure.”Ashe said about 20% of its members are in a weak financial position, so zoos got creative to keep guests interested. “The San Antonio Zoo started with the idea of a drive-thru zoo,” Ashe said.At Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, they made use of social media. “Our social media team, like many around the country, really ramped up,” Chastain said.Now as they begin to reopen their gates, they face a whole new set of challenges. “Almost every zoo in the country had to revamp and figure out how to do timed tickets, because it was one of the major requirements,” Chastain said.Timed ticketing, one way traffic, cashless exchange -- these were all concepts zoos and aquariums had to adapt to.“All over the zoo there are marks that help people stay away from each other,” Chastain said.Even with sold out tickets, the crowds are nothing like they used to be. And many fundraising events had to be canceled or postponed with new capacity limits.“Our guess is for the next 12 months, we won’t have those large crowds,” he said.But families continue to come to see the giraffes, look at the penguins, or feed Zambezi and Kasai, the hippos.“It’s been a challenge, but a lot of fun,” Wallace said. 3105

WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. — If dedication to a passion distinguishes a champion from a crowd, Marlys Halbeisen just might be the one who stands out.“Nothing would be anything without her,” said Tamera Halbeisen, Marlys' daughter-in-law.“They’re not just getting a card, they’re getting a message from us saying – ‘We care about you,’” Marlys Halbeisen said.For the past three years, Marlys has transformed her Wheat Ridge home into a smaller version of Santa’s workshop for a cause near and dear to her heart.“My husband was in the military,” Marlys said. “He served in the Korean War.”In 2018, she personalized 2,700 Christmas cards for troops overseas.Last year, she did 18,000. And this year — an astounding 40,000.“The pandemic was good,” Marlys said, laughing. “I couldn’t go anywhere, so I just worked on cards.”KMGH first met Marlys last year, when the company she had lined up to ship the cards simply vanished.In the days that followed, KMGH viewers stepped up and donated so much money to the TV station's fund, that they not only paid for the shipping last year, they were able to pay for the cards and shipping this year, as well.“After visiting three stores, I bought 35,000 cards,” Marlys said.She also received about 5,000 donated cards.“Cards come every day," Marlys said. “Yesterday, I got a bag of cards.”The plan this year was to have multiple card-writing parties. That didn’t happen.“We were going to have everybody for the fun night – write the cards,” Marlys said. “Well, of course, the pandemic prevented that.”And yet, somehow, this 78-year-old would find the silver lining.“It was wonderful,” Marlys said. “I was never bored. Everybody said, ‘Oh, ‘I’m so bored.’ And I go, ‘Well, why don’t you write some cards?’”It’s also been said that one can’t expect everyone to have the same dedication as one does one's self.“Well, you know, I always thought that you find the best help at the end of your arms," Marlys said.And so it was. This one woman show who amazed us last year did it again this year.“Beyond proud,” Tamera said. “I mean, this has just given her even more dedication.”“This does make such a huge difference in a GI’s life,” said James Boxrud, manager with the U.S. Postal Service in Denver. “I remember being overseas at Christmas when I was in the service. White House senior policy adviser Stephen Miller has been interviewed as part of special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe, according to sources familiar with the investigation.The interview brings the special counsel investigation into President Donald Trump's inner circle in the White House. Miller is the highest-level aide still working at the White House known to have talked to investigators.Miller's role in the firing of FBI Director James Comey was among the topics discussed during the interview as part of the probe into possible obstruction of justice, according to one of the sources.Special counsel investigators have also shown interest in talking to attendees of a March 2016 meeting where foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos said that he could arrange a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin through his connections. Miller was also at the meeting, according to a source familiar with the meeting.Papadopoulos was recently charged with lying to the FBI about Russian contacts he had during the campaign.Earlier this year, Miller assisted Trump in writing a memo that explained why Trump planned to fire Comey, according to sources familiar with the matter. Eventually that memo was scrapped because of opposition by White House counsel Don McGahn, who said its contents were problematic, according to The New York Times.The Comey dismissal letter -- drafted during a May weekend at Trump's golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey -- has also drawn interest from the Mueller team. Sources tell CNN that White House senior adviser Jared Kushner, who was also in New Jersey that weekend, did not oppose the decision to fire Comey. CNN has reported the special counsel's team is asking questions in interviews with witnesses about Kushner's role in Comey's firing.The Times reported in September that the Justice Department had turned over a copy of the letter, which was never sent, to special counsel Robert Mueller. That memo, according to a source, was very similar to a letter written by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein that was cited as the reason for firing Comey. Rosenstein's letter criticized Comey's handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's private email server.But just days after the firing, Trump said he considered the Russia probe in his decision to fire Comey."In fact when I decided to just do it, I said to myself, I said 'you know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made-up story, it's an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won'," Trump said about his decision to fire Comey in a May interview with NBC News.Miller was also an early member of Trump's campaign staff, leaving his role as Sessions' communications director in the Senate to join Trump in January 2016.Mueller's team has also talked to key former aides including former White House chief of staff Reince Preibus and former White House press secretary Sean Spicer. They have also interviewed National Security Council chief of staff Keith Kellogg.
