BAIKONUR, Kazakhstan, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- Russia's Phobos-Grunt probe and China's Yinghuo-1 satellite were launched from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on a Zenit-2SB rocket at 00:16 am Moscow time Wednesday (2016 GMT Tuesday). The main aim of the Phobos-Grunt unmanned mission is to bring back the first ever soil sample from Phobos, the larger of Mars' two moons.Russia had spent about 5 billion rubles (about 161 million U.S. dollars) preparing for the three-year mission, which would include drilling Phobos' surface and returning 200 grams of soil back to Earth, according to Russian state space agency Roscosmos. The mission would also collect bacteria samples for two Russian and one U.S. biological experiments. In the meantime, China's first Mars probe Yinghuo will go into orbit around Mars and observe the planet itself.Phobos-Grunt is planned to reach Mars in 2012, then deploy its lander for Phobos in 2013 and return the soil sample back to Earth in August 2014.The Chinese probe, which would not land on Mars nor return to the Earth, is expected stay permanently in the space and communicate with the ground control directly via satellites. The Chinese probe is 75 cm long, 75 cm wide and 60 cm high. It weighs 115 kilograms and was designed for a two-year life to discover why water disappeared from Mars and shed light on other environmental changes on the planet.Victor Khartov, chief designer and director general of Lavochkin Research & Production Association, told Xinhua that the three-year mission is highly complicated."It consists of eight sub-missions: launch, travel to Mars vicinities, separation with the Chinese probe YH-1, landing on Phobos, soil collection, launch from Phobos, way back to the Earth, and final landing. Failure of any one of them could doom the entire project," he said. The launch of Phobos-Grunt and Yinghuo-1, originally scheduled for October 2009 on a Russian carrier rocket, has been postponed until 2011 due to "technical reasons" on the Russian side.

BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- China has launched a one-year inter-agency national campaign aiming to return most street children home, the Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA) said Monday. The MCA will lead the campaign, which is joined by the ministries of education, public security, financial, health, human resources and social security, and housing and urban-rural development, an MCA statement said."We will try our best to identify most street children in cities and send them home by the end of 2012," the statement said.Minister Li Liguo of Civil Affairs said, ministries concerned should strengthen communication and coordination, and speed up the revision of regulations on the relief of city beggars and vagrants. The MCA also urged provincial governments to set up special offices coordinating the campaign. Several provinces, such as Hebei and Yunnan, have been working on this, the statement said.Police will step up their efforts to identify and rescue street children who wander near railway stations, major tourist sites, business areas and subway stops, while civil affairs departments will assist investigation and provide shelter for homeless children, the statement said.Urban communities and neighborhoods are asked by the ministry to report homeless children to local police. Police and civil affairs departments will cooperate to ascertain the whereabouts of their parents or guardians. In home places of street children, education departments are urged to send them to schools or vocational schools, and those from needy families will have their tuition reduced or waived.Health departments are required to offer street children easy access to medical facilities in emergency cases. Hospitals listed in the campaign will treat sick street children free of charge.

BEIJING, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao will meet with his U.S. counterpart, Barack Obama, at the 19th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Informal Leadership Meeting, said China's Assistant Foreign Minister, Wu Hailong, on Monday. He said the APEC summit will be held from Nov. 12 to 13 in Hawaii, with the theme of "seamless regional economy."According to Wu, speaking at a Foreign Ministry media briefing, Hu will attend the "APEC Leaders' Informal Meeting, Leaders' Dialogue with Representatives from APEC Business Advisory Council, and APEC CEO Summit."China hopes the APEC members will implement the economic growth strategy agreed last year, striving to achieve a balanced, inclusive, sustainable, innovative and safe economic growth, said Wu.China expects the APEC members to comprehensively promote regional trade and investment liberalization, he said, adding that all member states should fulfill their commitments and oppose all forms of trade protectionism.Wu said APEC should strengthen economic and technical cooperation to enhance the development ability of the developing members, and therefore to achieve common prosperity."APEC members generally hold positive attitudes toward U.S. proposals in various fields such as green growth, innovation policy. But some of the U.S.'s expected outcomes are beyond the capacity of the developing members, and they have expressed their difficulties and concerns," Wu said."However, all parties hope this meeting will achieve balanced and practical results".Assistant Commerce Minister Yu Jianhua said major topics to be discussed at the summit would include pushing forward the Doha Round negotiations, opposing trade protectionism, promoting green growth, and cooperation on developing regulations to govern emerging industries. He said China hopes the meeting will further promote the liberalization and facilitation of trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific region, push forward economic and technology cooperation, support multilateral trade systems, oppose trade protectionism, so as to inject vitality into world economic recovery and growth. On safeguarding the multilateral trade system, Yu said the decade-long Doha round talks have entered a critical period and the summit should be a strong voice for the early completion of the talks as well as joint resistance against trade protectionism. He said the APEC members should make joint efforts to remove discriminatory trade restrictions on high-tech products, and promote technology transfer and cooperation, so as to enable all members to benefit. On green growth, he said as APEC members differ sharply in their basis, conditions and levels in developing a green economy, the liberalization of environmental products and services should be pushed steadily. He also called on the developed economies to enhance capital and technical support for the developing economies, helping them in achieving their potential for sustainable development.

BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao on Tuesday exchanged congratulatory messages with their Israeli counterparts Shimon Peres and Benjamin Netanyahu on the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.Hu said the friendly exchanges between the Chinese and the Jewish people go back to ancient times.Since the forging of official ties 20 years ago, friendly cooperative ties between China and Israel have been developing continuously, and the exchanges and cooperation between the two sides in politics, economy and trade, culture, science and technology, agriculture and education have yielded fruitful results and brought tangible benefits to the two countries and the two peoples, Hu said.China attaches great importance to advancing Sino-Israeli ties and is ready to make joint efforts with Israel to take the celebration of the 20th anniversary as an opportunity to further consolidate the traditional Sino-Israeli friendship, deepen mutual cooperation in various fields, increase personnel exchanges on multiple levels, and promote a continuous development of friendly Sino-Israeli cooperative relations, he said. For his part, Peres said Israel and China established official diplomatic ties 20 years ago, which brought the friendship between the two countries to a historic high.He believed that the Israeli-Chinese friendship, which is based on a shared history, common values and ancient culture and tradition, will prevail.Peres said his country pays great attention to its ties with China in all areas, and is willing to conduct mutually beneficial cooperation with China in science and technology and other fields. In his message, Peres wished the Chinese people a "Happy New Year" in the Year of the Dragon. On the same day, Chinese Premier Wen also exchanged congratulatory messages with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.Wen said their bilateral friendly cooperative relations have continued to grow over the last 20 years.Political exchanges between the two countries have been increasingly close, economic and trade cooperation have continued to flourish, and pragmatic cooperation in culture, science and technology, and agriculture has been fruitful, Wen said.China and Israel have their own advantages, as well as huge potential and broad prospects for cooperation, the Chinese premier said.China is ready to continue to expand and deepen its friendly bilateral cooperation with Israel and raise Sino-Israeli ties to a new high, Wen said. For his part, Netanyahu said the Chinese and the Jewish people have always been friends.During the past 20 years, China and Israel succeeded in forging a stable and diversified partnership, he said. The Israeli side is ready to fully explore the potential of bilateral ties and continue to expand cooperation in science and technology, sanitation, agriculture and environmental protection technologies and other fields with China, Netanyahu said.He believed that there will be more opportunities to further consolidate the friendship between the two peoples and deepen bilateral cooperation in the future.Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman also exchanged congratulatory messages.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- The journal Science on Thursday chose the HPTN 052 clinical trial, an international HIV prevention trial as the 2011 Breakthrough of the Year. The study found that if HIV-infected heterosexual individuals begin taking anti-retroviral medicines when their immune systems are relatively healthy as opposed to delaying therapy until the disease has advanced, they are 96 percent less likely to transmit the virus to their uninfected partners. Findings from the trial, first announced in May, were published in the New England Journal of Medicine in August. The study was funded by the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health."The HPTN 052 study convincingly demonstrated that anti- retroviral medications can not only treat but also prevent the transmission of HIV infection among heterosexual individuals," said NIAID Director Anthony Fauci in a statement. "We are pleased that Science recognized the extraordinary public health significance of these study results."Science's list of nine other ground-breaking scientific achievements from 2011 include:The Hayabusa Mission: After some near-disastrous technical difficulties and a stunningly successful recovery, Japan's Hayabusa spacecraft returned to Earth with dust from the surface of a large, S-type asteroid. This asteroid dust represented the first direct sampling of a planetary body in 35 years, and analysis of the grains confirmed that the most common meteorites found on Earth, known as ordinary chondrules, are born from these much larger, S-type asteroids.Unraveling Human Origins: Studying the genetic code of both ancient and modern human beings, researchers discovered that many humans still carry DNA variants inherited from archaic humans, such as the mysterious Denisovans in Asia and still-unidentified ancestors in Africa. One study this year revealed how archaic humans likely shaped our modern immune systems, and an analysis of Australopithecus sediba fossils in South Africa showed that the ancient hominin possessed both primitive and Homo-like traits.Capturing a Photosynthetic Protein: In vivid detail, researchers in Japan have mapped the structure of the Photosystem II, or PSII, protein that plants use to split water into hydrogen and oxygen atoms. The crystal-clear image shows off the protein's catalytic core and reveals the specific orientation of atoms within. Now, scientists have access to this catalytic structure that is essential for life on Earth -- one that may also hold the key to a powerful source of clean energy.Pristine Gas in Space: Astronomers using the Keck telescope in Hawaii to probe the faraway universe wound up discovering two clouds of hydrogen gas that seem to have maintained their original chemistry for two billion years after the big bang. Other researchers identified a star that is almost completely devoid of metals, just as the universe's earliest stars must have been, but that formed much later. The discoveries show that pockets of matter persisted unscathed amid eons of cosmic violence.
