(KGTV) -- Wednesday, the City of Chula Vista filed a lawsuit against the Monsanto Company for chemical contamination.In the lawsuit filed by a law firm named Baron and Budd, the city says chemicals known as PCBs manufactured by Monsanto, now known as Bayer, have escaped into the city’s municipal stormwater system, leading the city to spend substantial amounts of money on cleanup.PCBs are known to cause a number of health issues in humans, such as cancer and damage to the immune system.RELATED: Jury awards 9 million in damages after man says he got terminal cancer from Monsanto's RoundupMonsanto was the sole manufacturer of the chemicals in the US between 1935 and 1979, when the chemicals were banned by the federal government.“Monsanto needs to stop playing games and accept responsibility for cleaning up the mess it’s made,” said Baron & Budd Shareholder, John Fiske. “Chula Vista is the latest city to recognize that PCB cleanup costs shouldn’t be passed on to its citizens, and I anticipate more cities and states will continue to follow suit.”RELATED: Bayer buys seed company Monsanto for billionThe chemicals were used numerous of commercial and industrial applications like paint, electric transformers, cable coatings, sealants and lubricants.Scientists say PCBs can’t be contained to their original applications so, when it rains, the chemicals escape into stormwater systems that wash into bodies of water, such as the bay.The law firm representing Chula Vista also represents San Diego, San Jose, Oakland, Berkley, Long Beach and several other cities in the Pacific Northwest in similar lawsuits. 1680

Chinese spacecraft Tiangong-1 is tumbling out of orbit above Earth, and is expected to re-enter Earth's atmosphere uncontrolled this weekend, the European Space Agency said. The spacecraft will re-enter Earth's atmosphere between Saturday morning and Monday morning. Tiangong-1 was at orbit roughly 200 miles above Earth after it launched in 2011. Slight atmospheric drag causes spacecrafts to decay in their altitude. As a result, spacecrafts have to conduct regular ‘reboost maneuvers’ to maintain their orbit, the European Space Agency said. Since December 2015, controllers on the ground have been unable to perform such maneuvers to keep it in orbit. Originally the plan was to control its re-entry to direct the craft into an unpopulated section of Earth. With no one able to control the spacecraft, it will tumble to the Earth somewhere between 43 degrees north and 43 south latitude. While that means much of the United States could be impacted by the falling spacecraft the size of a school bus, the European Space Agency projects that much, but not all, of the craft will break apart in the Earth's atmosphere. “Owing to the geometry of the station’s orbit, we can already exclude the possibility that any fragments will fall over any spot further north than 43oN or further south than 43oS,” says Holger Krag, Head of ESA’s Space Debris Office.The European Space Agency will be providing updates as it better projects when and where the spacecraft tumbles out of space and back to Earth.  1547

CHULA VISTA (KGTV) – Chula Vista police are investigating an overnight carjacking and kidnapping involving perpetrators disguised as law enforcement.The incident was reported just before midnight Tuesday in the Rancho Del Rey III neighborhood in East Chula Vista.Police said a group of men, armed with guns and wearing bullet proof vests, were driving in two white Ford Expedition SUV’s, which appeared to look like squad vehicles. Two people wearing vests with the word 'police' on the front ordered him to get out of his Renault Koleos SUV. Police said the victim believed the suspects had a gun. He got into one of their SUVs and was driven to Paseo Del Rey Park, located between Telegraph Canyon Road and East J Street. The suspects released the victim unharmed at the park, according to police.The victim walked 40 minutes to a residence on J Street to call 9-1-1, police said. He was not hurt in the incident, police said.The suspect vehicles and the stolen SUV are still outstanding, according to police. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Police are searching for the person who shot several kids with a BB gun recently.Thursday just before 4 p.m., three children were walking home from school when they say they were shot with a BB gun by someone driving past them near Montevalle Park on Duncan Ranch Rd. The children didn't need medical attention, but they did have visible injuries, Chula Vista Police said.Two of the girls told 10News reporter Laura Acevedo that a white SUV pulled up next to them before they were shot."The windows went down, and they yelled cuss words at us, and then they just pulled out the BB gun and they shot us," Bella Budd told 10News."If they had hit us in the eye or anywhere else more dangerous, we could've been rushed to the ER or seriously hurt," Brianna Field added.Since that report, CVPD said two other people have also reported being shot with BB gun by an unknown suspect.A description of a vehicle or suspect wasn't immediately available.CVPD is investigating and says anyone with information is asked to call 619-691-5151. 1064

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Health officials are working to notify people possibly exposed to tuberculosis over several months at Southwestern College, according to County News Center. The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency says the exposure period was from August 20 to November 8, 2018. The college says it will provide no-cost testing to identified students, faculty and staff from December 3 to 14 at Southwestern College Student Health Services. Tuberculosis is transmitted from person-to-person through indoor air during prolonged contact with an infectious individual. Symptoms include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss. “The initial infection usually has no symptoms, so we recommend testing for all those exposed to assure they are not infected,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “For any infected individuals, early diagnosis and prompt treatment can prevent the infectious form of the disease.”For more information call Southwestern Students Health Services at 619-482-6354 or the County TB Control Program at 619-692-8621. 1122
