Strokes, which are typically associated with the elderly, are appearing more in people under 50 years old, according to Sharp Health Care. According to the American Heart Association, a stroke happens when a clot in a blood vessel stops blood from reaching the brain. Doctors believe the increase is due to higher rates of obesity and diabetes, and poor management of blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Risk factors include smoking, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. Scott Peters described his trip to a migrant detention center near McAllen, Texas, as "stunningly depressing.""The single men were being held in a series of rooms, each built for say 8-10 people and I think they had 40 people in them ... The faces of these men just looking out with desperate looks through these windows, some of them shirtless, it's obviously very hot in those places," the Democratic congressman said of his July 13 visit.Peters described the stench from the facility due to the inability for the men to shower. He said another holding facility the size of a convention center, had women and children in rooms divided by chain-link fence. "For the small children there's a small area where they can have toys. There's a few tragic sights you see of four or five-year-olds who are unaccompanied," he said.He said San Diego isn't dealing with nearly as many migrants compared to Texas, "the night before we arrived they picked up 2,000 people." He said he's proud of how San Diegans have stepped up, creating a migrant shelter downtown to fill in the gaps created with new laws meant to speed up the process."They do the intake, provide medical assessments, and then get these people on their way so that they can be out on their way with their family around the country and ready for their asylum hearing," he said.Ultimately he said there needs to be change at the southern border and in the countries causing their citizens to flee. 1490

A 4-year-old girl was left alone inside a minivan overnight in a Milwaukee tow lot, Public Works Commissioner nominee Jeff Polenske said Tuesday at a news conference. Late Monday night, an impaired female driver was pulled over and arrested for an OWI when the vehicle was towed. Officers removed a 10-month-old child from the vehicle, but neglected to remove a 4-year-old girl from the backseat.Polenske said it wasn't until a tow lot employee heard the young girl crying that the girl was removed. Officials towed the car to the lot on around 12:30 a.m. The child was not discovered until around 8:30 a.m. Upon discovery, the child was checked by fire officials for immediate harm and later transported to the hospital for further review. Data from local meteorologists shows temperatures dipped as low as 19 degrees Monday night while the child was in the car.Milwaukee Public Works is reviewing more on the situation.   976

(KGTV) — The coroner's office has identified a teenager killed after a student pulled out a handgun and fired at classmates at a Southern California high school Thursday.Gracie Anne Muehlberger, 15, died from her injuries in the shooting at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita. One other student, a 14-year-old boy, also died at Henry Mayo Hospital in Valencia, but his identity has not been released.Three other students, 14-year-old boy, a 14-year-old girl, and a 15-year-old girl, were injured in the shooting, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva. Detectives said his mother was present at the time of his death.Investigators were still searching for a motive Friday. One detective said the shooting occurred on Berhow's 16th birthday."We have not yet established a motive or a nexus between the subject and his victims," Sheriff's Capt. Kent Wegener said Thursday. Officials added there's no history of Berhow being bullied or belief he "was acting on behalf of any group or ideology."Investigators said they believe the students injured were targeted at random, but added "it wasn't a spur of the moment act."It's unclear how Berhow reportedly acquired the firearm used in the attack. Several firearms were found in his home after investigators served a search warrant. Authorities added that Berhow's father, who's no longer alive, had six firearms registered to his name. None of those firearms matched the ones located by investigators."It's a sad day in Saugus, it's a sad day in Los Angeles County and the nation for another tragic shooting at a school," said Villanueva on Thursday.All schools in the William S. Hart Union High School District were closed Friday and counseling was made available to staff and students.
