BEIJING, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- China Thursday called on parties involved in the Cote d'Ivoire crisis to solve disputes and differences through dialogue."We appreciate the positive efforts of the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to promote a peaceful settlement of the Cote d'Ivoire crisis," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei at a regular press briefing.Cote d'Ivoire has been in political crisis after both incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo and his rival Alassane Ouattara claimed victory in the presidential run-off of Nov. 28.The AU and the ECOWAS have sent a joint five-member high-level delegation to the Cote d'Ivoire to seek a peaceful resolution to the country's political crisis.Hong said peacefully settling the crisis is in the common interests of west African countries. He urged the parties involved in the crisis "to settle differences, achieve political reconciliation, and maintain national peace and stability through consultation."

BEIJING, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Sudanese Mining Minister Abdel-Bagi Gailani said here Monday that Sudan is seeking to strengthen cooperation with China in the mining sector.Sudan is a vast country with rich mineral resources, said the minister. However, the country's abundant mineral resources are yet to be explored and utilized due to various reasons such as technical and financial constraints, he told Xinhua.Sudan welcomes and encourages Chinese companies to do business and to invest in his country, hoping that the two countries could diversify mutually beneficial cooperation, said Gailani.Sudan aims to utilize its resources in an efficient and rational manner through sharing China's advanced technologies and learning from the country's rich experiences and increasing financial input in the mining sector in a bid to step up the development of its national economy, the minister added.Gailani was in China for the 12th China Mining Congress & Expo, which will be held in the northern port city of Tianjin from Tuesday to Thursday.The annual event is expected to attract more than 3,000 participants from over 50 countries and regions.

BEIJING, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- China will increase the flexibility of the yuan exchange rate and further push forward the opening-up of its financial markets, a senior central bank official said Friday.China will continue the reform of the yuan exchange rate mechanism and keep the rate basically stable at a reasonable and balanced level, Li Dongrong, assistant governor of the People's Bank of China, said at a forum. The speech was posted on the central bank's website.The Chinese yuan strengthened to a record high against the U.S. dollar Friday, the central parity rate reaching 6.5896, the second straight day it has been set below 6.6 per dollar, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trading System.The currency has risen by more than 3 percent since the country's central bank announced in June 2010 it would further reform the yuan exchange rate formation mechanism to improve its flexibility.Li also said the central bank will work to expand trials of cross-border yuan settlement, to facilitate trade and investment.The central bank will promote the policy of allowing exporters to park their foreign revenue overseas, Li said, adding that it will further develop the foreign reserves market and create tools to hedge exchange rate risk.Li's speech came after the central bank announced Thursday the nation's qualified businesses and banks may settle their overseas direct investment in yuan, a move that expands the Chinese currency's global reach and eases excess domestic liquidity concerns.Li also voiced concern about loose credit globally, saying such policies are adding to capital-inflow and currency-appreciation pressures, leading to asset bubbles in some emerging economies.China still faces many challenges, Li said. "Expectations for inflation are rising. Housing prices are still high in some cities. Pressure from continuous inflows of foreign capital is increasingly evident," he said.The central bank will soundly manage money supply and maintain reasonable growth in credit, he added.

BEIJING, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- China's National Meteorological Center alerted central and southeast China to a blizzard on Wednesday as a bitter cold front kept expanding southward, enveloping China in snow and record-low temperatures.Snows have now covered most of southern China. Even the subtropical Guangdong Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region will see temperatures drops up to 10 degrees centigrade, according to a statement from the center.The ongoing Asian Para Games in Guangzhou, capital city of Guangdong, were affected by the weather. The wheelchair tennis competition hadto be held indoors, with some matches being delayed on Wednesday.A snowfall, starting at 8:45 a.m., has coated Nanchang City, capital of east China's Jiangxi Province, in white. Forecasts say snowstorms will continue to ravage most of Jiangxi until Friday.With the average temperature having dropped from about 9 to 1.7 degrees centigrade, most parts of central China's Hunan province are being pounded by rain, snow and hail storms.The weather has also begun to disrupt traffic.Flights leaving an airport in Jiangxi were canceled as snows affected visibility of pilots. In Hunan, drivers had to slow down to avoid accidents and construction work was halted amid the bitter cold as migrant workers crowded railway stations.Hunan and Jiangxi are only two of the many provinces and region to the south of the Yangtze River being hit by snowstorms.The National Meteorological Center forecast temperatures in most parts of China would start to climb on Friday. It could be disastrous when accompanied by snowstorms.The carpeting snows in central and southern China have started to remind people of a blizzard in January 2008, which left 129 people dead and caused losses of 151.65 billion yuan (22.7 billion U.S. dollars) in the same area.On Nov. 29 China's Ministry of Railroad called for railway stations across China to start bracing for the coming Spring Festival travel rush. The rush will start around Jan. 19, 2011.Meanwhile, many northern Chinese cities, that have already been swept by the cold front, reported the coldest temperature in a decade for this period.In an extreme case, temperatures in Hulunbuir City in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region dropped to minus 46 degrees centigrade. Beijing also reported a record low temperature on this date in the past 10 years.Further, ice sheets have been seen off the coast of the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea in east China as the northern part of the seas have begun to freeze.
