(KGTV) - A concert at the Belly Up Tavern this Saturday will raise money for a program dedicated to kids with special needs.Banding Together will hold their 7th annual fundraiser from 12-4 pm on February 24th. The concert features three local bands, and one special, surprise guest artist.The bands are Dr. Seahorse, the Grinnell Trio and Jungle Poppins.But the real stars will be the kids and young adults from the program, some of whom will perform with the bands on stage."It's thrilling for them," says Banding Together Co-Founder and Director Angela Meier. "They hear that people like the Rolling Stones have performed a show there and now they get to as well!"The program uses music therapy to help people with special needs come out of their shell. Meier says it's inspiring and amazing to see how they progress."I've had students who have difficulty putting sentences together," says Meier. "And using rhythm and music, all of the sudden they're able to sing whole sentences."In addition to individual and small group classes, Banding Together runs 42 "Jam Sessions" throughout the year, where the students and musicians join together to make music."It's not just that it's making them feel good, but it's giving them self-esteem," says Meier. "It gives them social skills and prepares them to go out into the community and give back."The concert is open to the public and will also feature live auctions, silent auctions and other fundraisers. All the money goes to fund scholarships and to pay for the jam sessions. Starbucks announced changes to their loyalty program giving customers more ways to pay for their drinks while earning stars.Customers have complained for years about the need to reload their Starbucks card in order to spend money at the coffee giant and earn loyalty stars.In order for customers to earn stars in the Starbucks Rewards loyalty program, customers had to use a Starbucks card or gift card to pay. This forced regular customers to constantly reload their card to ensure there was enough money for their purchases.Starbucks announced Tuesday they will allow alternative payments in a few months, and still allow members to earn stars or purchases. Alternative methods include debit/credit cards, cash, and select mobile wallets.However, there’s a catch.When the changes take place, customers paying with their Starbucks card or gift card will earn two loyalty stars per spent, and those paying with alternative methods will earn one star per spent. (KGTV) - The Solana Beach City Council is the latest local government body to take up the gun control debate in the wake of recent mass shootings.On Wednesday night, the council passed Resolution 2018-036, which calls upon California Congressmen and women to pass gun safety regulations.Included in the resolution is official opposition to the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017, currently making its way through Congress.That bill would force states to honor Concealed Carry Permits from other states, regardless of how strict or relaxed each state's regulations are.Other parts of the Solana Beach resolution call for:- Raising the minimum age to buy a gun to 21- Banning the sale of military-style semiautomatic and automatic weapons- Banning the sale of high capacity magazines that hold more than 10 cartridges- Universal background checks- Mandatory safety training before buying a gun- A 10-day waiting period before taking possession of a gunYou can read the full text of the resolution here.The resolution makes Solana Beach the second city council in San Diego County to take up the issue. In January, a committee of the San Diego City Council passed a similar resolution.Meanwhile, the Del Mar City Council asked the Fairgrounds to consider ending the Crossroads of the West gun shows that take place there several times each year following protests at the event earlier this March.But gun rights advocates say moves like these are all grandstanding, and make the gun safety debate more divisive."I think the intention is to portray gun owners as dangerous and not law-abiding and it's just not true, it's the exact opposite," says Michael Schwartz, with the San Diego County Gun Owners PAC.
