BEIJING, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of China (CPC) and Kuomintang (KMT) both expressed wish to promote cross-Strait trust and common understanding as Ma Ying-jeou took the position as the KMT chairman on Saturday.     The CPC Central Committee Saturday congratulated the Kuomintang(KMT) on the convocation of its18th congress, expecting the two parties to deepen mutual trust, increase exchanges and expand common understanding.     In a reply, the KMT Central Committee said they will work with the CPC for improving trust and mutual benefits, in a bid to improve the welfare of people on both sides.     At the congress, the KMT again included the "common aspirations and prospects for peace and development across the Taiwan Strait, "reached between the CPC and KMT in 2005, in its political guideline. Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou assumed the position of the island's ruling party chairman at Kuomintang's 18th plenary congress Saturday morning    Wu Yongping, deputy director of the Institute of Taiwan Studies, Tsinghua University, told Xinhua that this gave a positive signal that the KMT pledged again to further development of cross-Strait relations , which is helpful for further dialogues between the CPC and the KMT.     At the congress, Ma appointed Lien Chan and Wu Poh-hsiung as KMT honorary chairmen. They would assist Ma on cross-Strait affairs and external exchanges, according to Ma.     Hu Jintao, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, congratulated Lien Chan on continuing to be KMT honorary chairman and Wu Poh-hsiung on taking the position as honorary chairman.     The two responded with commitments to peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.     Lien said in a statement that since the two sides resumed systematic talks based on the 1992 Consensus, peace and stability across the Strait have been greatly enhanced and people's welfare improved.     "We should work even harder to consolidate the five-point common aspirations and prospects," Lien said.     Wu also noted that the two parties should work together for peace and development with "sincerity and goodwill."     Zhu Weidong, deputy director fo the Institute of Taiwan Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said, "Through the congress, we can see the KMT will not change its stance on easing cross-Strait relations, promoting exchanges with the CPC and carrying on the platform between the two parties."

Narayanan exchanged in-depth views about relevant issues in an atmosphere of frankness and friendliness. MACAO, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Macao Special Administrative Region(SAR) Legislative Election General Auditing Committee announced the official results of the election of the fourth Legislative Assembly of Macao on Tuesday night.     In line with the Basic Law, the new legislature is composed of 29 seats including 12 directly-elected seats, 10 indirectly-elected seats, and seven others which will be appointed by the SAR's chief executive.     A total of 122 candidates from 16 groups contested in the direct elections, while the indirect elections did not take place since only 10 candidates have been fielded by the four constituencies involved for the 10 seats.     Eight of the 12 candidates who won the direct elections were veteran lawmakers that have served their terms in the legislature, which includes Kwan Tsui Hang, Chan Meng Kam, Ng Kuok Cheong, Angela Leong On Kei, Jose Maria Pereira Coutinho, Lee Chong Cheng, Ung Choi Kun, and Au Kam San were the winners of the direct elections, while Ho Ion Sang, Mak Soi Kun, Chan Wai Chi and Melinda Chan Mei Yi become the new faces in the legislature.     For the part of indirect elections, the list of winners comprises Ho Iat Seng, Kou Hoi In, Fong Chi Keong, and Cheang Chi Keong of the industrial, commercial and financial sector; Lau Cheok Va, Lam Heong Sang of labor sector; Chui Sai Cheong and Leonel Alberto Alves of professional sector; Vitor Cheung Lup Kwan and Chan Chak Mo of social, cultural, educational and sports sector.     The election of the fourth term of the Legislative Assembly of the Macao SAR officially started Sunday morning. The authorities delayed announcing the results of the legislative election because6,539 ballots were found to be spoiled, the SAR's Legislative Election Affairs committee said Monday.     Some 149,006 of the total 249,886 registered voters cast their ballots during the polling period, but 6,539 of these ballots were deemed as invalid, according to the SAR's Legislative Election Affairs Committee.     This year's voter turnout stood at 59.9 percent, compared with 58.39 percent in the previous legislative election in 2005.     The results of the legislative election still need to be submitted to the SAR's Court for final approval, and the confirmed results will be published on the SAR's Official Gazette on Sept. 30 at the latest.

BEIJING, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese economy is experiencing a "V" shape recovery and the growth rate may reach 8 percent both this year and next year, said Chinese economist Fan Gang said here Saturday.     Fan, a monetary policy adviser to China's central bank, said at the 2009 annual conference of CEO in Beijing, that the economy will see a sustainable recovery and will be back to normal in 2011,according to a report of the China News Service.     He predicted that the real estate investment will increase by around 30 percent in 2010, which will add one percentage point to economic growth.     Corporate investment is expected to grow prominently next year and as the global trade is warming up, Chinese export, which still enjoys the cost advantage, will recover.       "After the economy is back to normal in 2010, the government will adjust the macro-economic policy. But before that happens, the current stimulus policy should stay to sustain the recovery," he said.     Fan said people should adjust their expectation of economic growth and not regard recovery simply as a double-digit growth. A growth grate of 8 percent to 9 percent is sustainable growth.

BEIJING, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- China attaches great importance to U.S. President Barack Obama's visit in November, a senior Chinese official told visiting U.S. Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg in Beijing Tuesday.     State Councilor Dai Bingguo said China would work with the U.S. to ensure the success of this visit.     Steinberg, who arrived in China Monday, said President Obama was looking forward to his visit, and hoped it would promote U.S.-China relations.     Dai said relations between the two countries had developed vigorously with close exchanges and cooperation since the Obama administration took office.     The two sides should work together for the continuous and steady development of bilateral ties, Dai said.     A key mission of Steinberg's China trip is to prepare for Obama's visit. It is part of the senior U.S. diplomat's week-long tour of Asia, which also takes him to Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul and Tokyo.     He said Obama considered his meeting with President Hu Jintao in New York last week had given an impetus to bilateral ties.     Obama's visit would "mark an important milestone in building mutual trust and respect between the people of China and the United States," said a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Beijing late Tuesday on his departure from China.     In a separate meeting with Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, Steinberg reiterated that the United States would continue with the one-China policy and respect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, which were considered by the U.S. government the crucial principle in handling bilateral ties.     After expounding China's stance on Taiwan and issues concerning Tibet and Xinjiang, Xi said respect and care for each side's core interests and major concerns was the key to the healthy and steady growth of ties.     Xi called on the U.S. side to handle concerned issues in a "prudent" and "appropriate" way, to safeguard China-U.S. relations.     Steinberg said President Obama had several times stressed the great importance of U.S.-China relations since he took office in January.     The United States hoped to reveal to the world through President Obama's China visit that the two countries were willing to jointly respond to global challenges, including the global financial crisis, terrorism and non-proliferation, he said.     Xi called on joint efforts from both countries to ensure "positive results" from Obama's China tour.     "President Hu Jintao had successful meeting with President Obama in New York last week, in which they reached new important consensus on promoting active, all-round development of bilateral ties," said Xi.     "China is ready to work closely with the United States to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, enhance strategic trust and substantial cooperation in various areas, and properly handle differences and sensitive issues," Xi said.
