CARMEL VALLEY (KGTV) - Schools are urging parents to learn more about the hit Netflix show '13 Reasons Why' so they can have a conversation with their kids.The first season of the show came out in March of 2017, and immediately after searches on Google relating to suicide skyrocketed.Particularly, "how to commit suicide" up?26%, "suicide prevention" rose 23% and "suicide hotline number" was up 21% according to a research paper published in JAMA International Medicine and CNN.At Carmel Valley Middle School, they faced that very serious issue personally. Three 7th graders, Madison, Lauren and Ximena saw their friend, who moved to LA, posting her pain on social media. She was cutting."She was posting a lot of videos on social media holding up an exact-o-knife and talking about all this," Madison said."I found out first and texted both of them and said we have to do something about it," Ximena said it was on her Snapchat story.Madison said they were taught in P.E. that this kind of act is a plea for help. They went to their counselor, Karen Infantino who went the extra step, reaching out to a counselor at the friend's new school, ensuring she got the help she needed."And was able to reach out and make sure that she was in a good place but it’s also really important for me to make sure that any student that comes to me feels listened to and acknowledged," Infantino said.The sentiment of being heard could've changed the entire plot of '13 Reasons Why.'The main character of the dramatic series reveals the reasons she committed suicide. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) — Officials have identified the bicyclist killed this week after being hit by a train in Carlsbad.Thursday night, 37-year-old Jason Holsinger was riding his bike on the sidewalk when he came to the Grand Avenue train intersection in downtown Carlsbad. Officials say even though the crossing arms were fully down, he rode around them and collided with the side of a passing train.The San Diego County Medical Examiner ruled the death an accident.Holsinger's death has renewed worries of safety surrounding train crossings in Carlsbad.The tragedy occurs just two days after Operation Clear Track, an event meant to raise awareness about railroad safety hosted by Carlsbad Police, Amtrak Police, and Operation Lifesaver. The event is the largest rail safety law enforcement initiative in the U.S., running from Sept. 22 - 28.In 2017, the family of Patrick Terrin filed a lawsuit against the City of Carlsbad and BNSF Railway, arguing they "negligently, carelessly and wrongfully failed to properly warn persons crossing the railroad tracks."Terrin was killed in 2014 after a night of bar-hopping nearby with his sister and friends. He had crossed under the crossing arm bar before it was fully down, as the rest of the group waited. Despite begin several feet off the tracks, he was hit and killed.The family's lawyer says crossing arms only extend across traffic lanes, leaving sidewalks unmarked with no paint to warn pedestrians where to safely stand.To make the area safer, Carlsbad has approved construction on a trench along the tracks as a safety measure. CALIPATRIA, Calif. (KGTV) — Six prison guards were injured during an attack by an inmate this week, leading to the use of deadly force.Calipatria State Prison inmate Douglas Compton refused to leave an "out-of-bounds" area in the prison's yard on Thursday after three officers ordered him to do so, according to the state's Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (CDCR).Compton then stabbed one of the officers in the head and face, CDCR says. Responding officers used batons, pepper spray, and other use-of-force options to try and subdue Compton.During the struggle, Compton punched another two officers.An officer in an observation tower discharged one lethal round from a rifle to stop the attack. No one was injured by the use of lethal force, CDCR says.Six officers were injured and taken to an outside hospital for treatment and released.Compton was injured and treated, before being transferred to another prison.CDCR added that two inmate-made weapons were recovered at the scene. CDCR investigators are investigating the weapons as well as the use of deadly force.Compton was sentenced to 112 years to life in prison following a 2013 conviction of second-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter with the use of a firearm and possession of a firearm by an ex-felon with the use of an altered ID. 1315

(KGTV) - Dozens gathered in Carlsbad Saturday afternoon protesting the closures of businesses and schools due to the coronavirus."We got to get our economy going again and we need our businesses and schools open at the same time," San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond said.The rally comes as San Diego is seeing progress during the pandemic, eligible to fall off the state's watch list and potentially reopen schools in two weeks.RELATED: Del Mar increases mask enforcement as crowds fill beachesActivists at the Shoppes at Carlsbad say that is too long to wait."The longer this pandemic and the shutdown occurs, the more likely some of these businesses are never going to reopen," Oceanside Mayor Peter Weiss said.In the crowd was Juan Velasco, co-owner of Slight Edge Hair Salon in Oceanside.
