MUSCAT, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's top political adviser Jia Qinglin arrived here Saturday for an official goodwill visit intended to promote the development of relations between China and Oman.Jia, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, delivered a written speech at the airport of the Omani capital.In the speech, Jia hailed the traditional friendship and fruitful cooperation between China and Oman, which was once connected by the "Silk Road", pledging to enhance mutual understanding and friendship between the two countries and the two peoples through his visit.Oman is the third leg of Jia's four-state visit. lNEW YORK, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Since global leaders established the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in 2000, China has achieved remarkable progress in achieving the grand targets.As the world's largest developing nation, China has pursued the way of peace and development, adopted policies of gender equality, resource conservation and environmental protection, and taken action to advance the implementation of the MDGs.The MDGs were established in 2000 at the Millennium Summit in New York.World leaders pledged there to do their utmost to attain the goals by 2015, including slashing poverty, fighting disease, halting environmental degradation and boosting health.According to UN reports, global progress on poverty reduction was largely due to the reduction of hunger in China.Since 1990, poverty, especially absolute poverty in rural areas, has been greatly reduced, according to the UN Development Program (UNDP).China has now achieved the target of halving the number of poor people from the 1990 figure of 85 million, and thus has realized the target of halving the proportion of people living in extreme poverty.An MDGs report issued in June noted that the sharpest reductions in poverty continued to be recorded in East Asia. Poverty rates in China were expected to fall to around 5 percent by 2015.Some of the MDGs, including those on primary education, have already been achieved in China 13 years in advance. The mortality rate of children under five dropped from 61 per 1,000 births in 1991 to 25 in 2004. The maternal mortality ratio decreased from 89 per 100,000 live births in 1990 to 51.3 in 2003.

VIENNA, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- The six-party talks is the fundamental way of solving the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, a senior Chinese diplomat told the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) directors meeting here Tuesday.From the long term perspective, the fundamental way of settling regional contradictions and disputes is through continuing to advance the six-party talks, achieving the conversion of the mechanism of armistice to peace, and finally establishing a security system of peace in Northeast Asia, said Hu Xiaodi, China' s permanent representative and ambassador to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna.To this end, China hopes that no matter how situation changes, parties concerned should fix their attention on the overall situation, exercise restraint, resume direct dialogues and talks at an early date, Hu said, adding all sides should make joint efforts to achieve an early resumption of the six-party talks, and continue to advance the process of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.Hu noted that the situation on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia is still sensitive and complex, with the six-party talks stalled.The current situation once again shows that severe lack of mutual trust among parties concerned is the root cause of both frequent tensions in northeast Asia and difficulties for the six- party talks. Under such circumstances, the only way to gradually accumulate trust and seek to properly address concerns of each side in a balanced manner is through maintaining contacts, dialogues and frank communications, Hu said.Hu said all parties should give serious thoughts on how to change the situation and put the Korean Peninsula issue back on the track of dialogue and consultation at an early date.

HANOI, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- China and Vietnam vowed to promote healthy, stable and long-term development of bilateral ties with the guideline of "long-term stability, future-orientation, good-neighborliness and comprehensive cooperation," according to a joint press communique issued here on Monday by the two defense ministries.The two countries vowed to advance bilateral comprehensive strategic and cooperative partnership and always be good neighbors, friends, comrades and partners, according to the joint communique issued on the occasion of Chinese State Councilor and Defense Minister Liang Guanglie' s visit to Vietnam.According to the communique, China and Vietnam will continue to strengthen defense cooperation to promote military ties and bilateral relations.The two sides agreed to maintain the fine tradition of exchanging high-level military delegations and give full play to the bilateral defense and security consultation mechanism, said the communique.China and Vietnam are committed to settling all disputes though peaceful means and safeguarding regional peace and stability, said the communique.The two countries reiterated to enhance coordination and interaction in multilateral forums like United Nations and ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus), an enlarged ADMM with participation of eight dialogue partners, according to the communique.China and Vietnam also expressed the willingness to deepen cooperation in tackling non-traditional security challenges under the framework of ADMM-Plus and deepen cooperation in humanitarian efforts like disaster relief, said the communique.Liang arrived in Vietnam on Sunday for an official and friendly visit.
