BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said Friday that the role of the United Nations should be bolstered in handling the global economic downturn, achieving sustainable development, and safeguarding world peace and security. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council and the largest developing nation, China has always observed the principles of the UN Charter, supported the UN's efforts to improve security, development and human rights and its reform to increase efficiency, Hu said to visiting UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon Hu.     "China will continue to join in the UN undertakings and carry out its duties with responsive and constructive attitude, and will work with the international community to build a harmonious world," Hu said. BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chairman Ning Gaoning of China National Cereals, Oils & Foodstuffs Corporation (COFCO), said Sunday the corporation's total investment in the northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region would reach 10 billion yuan (1.46 billion U.S. dollars) over the next five years.     Ning made the remarks during his visit to the Xinjiang-based subsidiary companies of the corporation, the country's largest oil and food producer.     Currently, COFCO's accumulative investment in the region is about 5 billion yuan, focused on tomato processing, sugar manufacturing, and beverages.     Ning said the corporation would double investment over the next five years due to confidence in the region's growth potential, but did not say for which the future investment would be targeted.     In 2005, COFCO made an investment in Xinjiang's Tunhe Investment Co., Ltd. by taking over a 37.2 percent share of Tunhe. So far COFCO Tunhe has become the largest tomato ketchup producer in Asia, and the second largest in the world.

HANOI, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee General Secretary Nong Duc Manh met with a Communist Party of China (CPC) delegation here on Friday.     The Chinese delegation is headed by He Yong, member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and deputy secretary of CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.     During the meeting, Manh said Vietnamese party, government and people treasure the friendship with China. BRUSSELS, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice-President Xi Jinping urged closer cooperation between China and Belgium during a speech Friday at the China-Belgium Economic and Trade Forum.     Xi said the development of cooperation between China and Belgium has brought tangible benefits to the two countries.Despite the impact of the global financial crisis, bilateral trade volume rose 14.4 percent to 20.2 billion U.S. dollars in 2008, 1,000 times as much 38 years ago when diplomatic relations were established, he said.     The vice president advanced a three-point proposal to further strengthen bilateral cooperation. Those issues, he said, include the global financial crisis, world economic development, climate change, food and energy security, the Doha round of trade talks, and international financial structure reforms.     "I believe that the perspective of the mutual benefit cooperation between China and the EU has a better future with the joint efforts of the two sides," Xi said.     Xi also reviewed the great achievements China has made in the 60 years since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949.     Xi stressed that there still is a long way to go for China to achieve a more prosperous society.     As a peace-loving country, Xi said, China will always continue efforts to cooperate with world countries based on the five principles of peaceful coexistence. He said China also would actively help solve regional and international hot issues and work together with the international community for a peaceful and harmonious world.     Under the current situation, China will continue to cooperate with Belgium and other EU members to promote reforms of the international financial system, to enhance international financial surveillance, to prevent further spread of the financial crisis and to stem the torrent of all kinds of trade and investment protectionism.     Xi arrived here Wednesday for an official visit to Belgium, the first leg of his five-nation European tour.
