SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A medical helicopter transporting a heart from Grossmont Hospital for transplant crashed on the helipad of a Los Angeles-area hospital on Friday.The AgustaWestland A109 medical helicopter flipped onto its side after experiencing a hard landing on the roof of Keck Hospital of USC at about 3:15 p.m., according to a statement from the hospital. Three people on board, the pilot and two medical personnel, escaped without major injuries. Nobody on the ground or in the hospital was injured, the hospital and FAA said. Patient care at the hospital was not interrupted.The helicopter was carrying a heart from Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa, according to helicopter service provider Helinet. The hospital said in a statement that the organ was safely delivered to the intended patient in time for surgery.“We are fully cooperating with the NTSB and FAA on their investigations,” said Helinet COO and President Sean M. Cross. “Our company prides itself on professional operation and maintenance of aircraft as core values - the safety of our customers and pilots is always our top priority. We are happy that at this time there appear to have been no serious injuries.”The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.Helinet says it completed more than 1,300 helicopter air ambulance missions in 2019. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man who recently returned from Iran is under self-quarantine at his parents' home in Rancho Bernardo. The traveler, who declined to give his name, lives in San Francisco. He said it would be easy to expose other family members at his home, but his parents have a detached unit where he can isolate himself. He said he contacted his healthcare provider for guidance before returning to the United States, but was directed to the CDC website. "The onus shouldn't be on me. There should be some kind of response, from the government or some kind of authority. I just feel they should be a lot more proactive. I feel it's going to hit us like a tsunami, " said the man. He was in Iran, where at least 200 people have died from COVID19, for the last few months taking care of his family business. He's been out of the country for eight days. He says he isn't showing any symptoms, but he still wants to be tested. "Per CDC guidelines, they said if you're not showing symptoms, you don't need, and the word was "need," you don't need a test, you should just self-quarantine until the 14 day period has passed. Need is one thing, I said I want to test, I said wouldn't you want to test, if you're a carrier you want to know." It's up to an individual's doctor or healthcare professional to recommend someone for testing, but the CDC has the final say. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of women is trying to appeal the decision by a judge to release the 'Bolder than Most' rapist, Alvin Quarles. Quarles is set to be released in Jacumba Hot Springs by Nov. 30. The women, including two of his victims, created a petition called Your Voice has Power. They are collecting signatures to be delivered to District Attorney Summer Stephan's office. Cynthia Medina and Mary Taylor were both assaulted by Quarles in the late 1980s. They are worried that he will re-offend when he's released. "He will re-offend. I fear for your daughter, your sister, your grandmother, your mother, your boyfriend, your son," said Medina. Judge David Gill ordered the 56-year-old's release at a hearing on October 12th. He will be forced to wear a GPS tracker. Quarles earned his nickname because authorities said he attacked women at knifepoint while they slept and often forced his victim's male partner to watch or participate in the sex crimes. Jacumba Hot Springs residents call the release outrageous, saying it's not the first time a sexual predator has been released into their community. "It's become the junkyard for these terrible criminals. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego man convicted of murder will be a free man, decades before his scheduled release.Donnell Fulcher’s conviction for a Barrio Logan murder in 2006 was overturned due to changes in DNA standards, said Deputy District Attorney Hector Jimenez.On Tuesday, Fulcher pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and assault with a firearm rather than go through a third trial. The judge sentenced Fulcher to 14 years, but he received credit for time he already served.Because of that, Fulcher will be released from custody tonight or tomorrow. This result comes after the San Diego County District Attorney’s Conviction Review Unit took a second look at cases involving DNA mixtures, meaning more than one DNA source is found in a sample. Fulcher’s case relied heavily on this type of evidence.The top forensic science group that analyzes DNA released guidelines that are now more conservative, which affected Fulcher’s case. Earlier this year, the District Attorney’s office agreed to give Fulcher a new trial.“We still believe that we have the right guy, but we lost confidence in the conviction so we wanted to give the defendant a chance to have a new trial if he wanted. He chose to plead guilty instead, so at the end of the day, I believe justice was done,” Jimenez said. Fulcher has always maintained his innocence.“I don’t think you can put any limit on the happiness that going free can have for someone who’s serving a life sentence. He is very, very happy. His family is very happy. This is really a joyous moment for all of them,” said Fulcher’s defense attorney Knut Johnson.This would have been Fulcher’s third trial.
