Students across the country are spelling their way to greatness in the Scripps National Spelling Bee program. Students are in the process of advancing from classroom to school to region to earn a spot in the national finals in National Harbor, Maryland, in May 2020. Spellers who win their school spelling bee but don’t advance past their region can keep their dream alive of competing in the national spotlight. For the third year in a row, the Bee is offering its RSVBee program. It is a participation pathway that qualifies more spellers for the national finals. It is the only way students living in unsponsored regions can advance and is an additional opportunity for the best spellers in the country to compete on the national stage.The Bee created RSVBee with an eye toward fairness, accessibility, maintaining the integrity of the competition and delivering a quality Bee Week experience for all. The Scripps National Spelling Bee has more than 250 sponsors across the country who support the program and make it possible for local students to advance. Still, there are unsponsored sections in the U.S., and some of its sponsored regions have grown so large and competitive that RSVBee is the Bee’s answer to address access and fairness. “We’ve known for many years that large numbers of excellent spellers have had limited access to the national finals or no pathway at all,” said Paige Kimble, executive director of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. “We created RSVBee to address this very issue and make our iconic competition accessible to a wider population of children who love words and language and enjoy competitive spelling.” The Bee is narrowing the field of the national finals to about 400 competitors, down from last year’s 562, with the intent of providing spellers and their families with a more personalized, quality experience during Bee Week. The most awarded country group of the last decade announced Tuesday that they’ll mark their 20th anniversary with a 25-city farewell tour this year.The "Rascal Flatts Farewell: Life is a Highway Tour" will kick off in Indianapolis on June 11, stretch coast to coast, and end in West Palm Beach on Oct. 17. During the tour, lead singer Gary LeVox, bassist Jay DeMarcus and guitarist Joe Don Rooney say they’ll reflect with fans on their catalogue of hits like “Bless The Broken Road,” “My Wish,” and “What Hurts The Most.” DeMarcus told CBS This Morning that the band is looking forward to spending the entire year loving on fans and thanking them for their amazing career over the last 20 years. “While it is of course bittersweet, it is so important to us to celebrate what our music has meant to their lives, as well as what the fans have meant to us," DeMarcus said. SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — What started as a regular day at an Arizona grocery store has led to a life-long friendship. “We saw him just holding this bill and just kind of wandering around," Stephanie Blackbird said. "He didn’t look well ... He looked lost and I couldn’t walk away, I couldn’t in good conscience walk away without at least checking on this man.”Blackbird, and her husband, met Alan Vandevander at a Whole Foods in Scottsdale, Arizona. They helped him get some food, started up a conversation, then parted ways. But the Blackbirds couldn't get the frail homeless man off their minds. They reconnected with him the next morning and helped him get to a hospital. Vandevander was severely malnourished. “He said, 'I’m glad they found me cause I was in trouble,' ” Blackbird said . After getting to know him, the Blackbirds did some digging and found out Vandevander has quite the story. He served in Vietnam and was awarded a Purple Heart, but he had also been missing for 40 years. His family in Indiana had no idea Vandevander was still alive.“I started looking for him in 1990 and I kept coming across dead ends," said Vandevander's sister, Julie Vandevander. She says she last spoke to her brother in the 80s. “I never ever thought I would hear from my brother again.”The two spoke on the phone just before Christmas for the first time in almost four decades. The Blackbirds have spent the last several weeks helping the man find the care he needs, taking him to hospitals and now the VA. Vandevander's sister hopes to fly to Arizona later this month to reunite with her brother. 1610
