Democrat Conor Lamb and Republican Rick Saccone are locked in a neck and neck battle to decide who will represent Pennsylvania's 18th Congressional District.After a long night of drama, the race is still too close to call. Lamb holds a slight lead over Saccone with 100% of the Election Day vote tallied, but absentee and provisional ballots are still being counted. It would be an significant uphill climb for Saccone to overtake Lamb.Lamb claimed victory in a speech to his supporters Tuesday night."It took a little longer than we thought, but we did it," he said. "You did it."Saccone, however, said he isn't giving up."We are still fighting the fight. It's not over yet," Saccone told his supporters more than an hour earlier.It's a bad sign for Republicans that the 18th District race is razor-tight. President Donald Trump won there by 20 percentage points in 2016, and GOP groups pumped .7 million into a months-long effort to stave off an embarrassing loss there. Lamb's performance is ominous for the GOP as it heads into November's midterm elections.Even a narrow Lamb win would signal that the GOP is in danger even in districts considered safe for Republicans, raising Democratic hopes of capturing the House and maybe the Senate in November. A Republican loss could lead to more House members retiring rather than running into headwinds in re-election bids. Democrats, meanwhile, would look to replicate Lamb's success in working-class districts with similar demographics.With no declared winner, both parties took a stab at spinning the available results. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee claimed victory for Lamb in a statement Tuesday night, while the National Republican Congressional Committee said it was "confident" Saccone would win.Earlier in the evening, before it became clear the results would be so close, several Republican officials told CNN they were expecting Saccone to lose. Scripps Company, talked with one of the first to sign up about why she's doing it, and her message to other girls.When it comes to a boy scout meeting, you'd expect it to start with the Pledge of Allegiance. But what you might not expect is to see girls reciting the pledge, with the boys.A meeting just outside Denver, Colorado is one of the first meetings since girls have been welcomed to join Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.Girls across the country can join Cub Scouts in August. But 8-year-old Caroline Graham is one of the first as a part of their early adopter program. And for her, it's not just about getting to participate in scout traditions. But getting to do more of what she loves; camping."You get to be outdoors," Graham said. "And you get to make way more friends."Until now, her dad would bring her along on some trips with her brothers, but as a girl scout, she often had to stay behind."I really wanted to go cause my brothers got to go," Graham said. "And now I actually can.""Every time we'd pull out of the driveway on her way to a camping trip her last though was, can I go?" Caroline's dad and den leader Andrew Graham said. "And we'd say not this time. But now that's gone."Andrew Graham says he's glad his daughter will be able to have the same opportunities as his sons."We're not trying to turn them into boys by no stretch of the imagination," said Andrew Graham. "We want them to just turn into the same leaders we're developing our boys to turn into. David Rush loves breaking world records; as a matter of fact, he has over 150 entries in the Guinness Book of World Records.This week, Rush’s latest foray into the world records book was for most targets hit with a single-shot Nerf gun. In one minute, Rush hit the target 24 times, breaking his previous record of 19.Rush said that he previously set the record unofficially at 24, but it did not count as the video he used to document his attempt did not take.With the Nerf gun being “single-shot,” Rush is required to reload between each shot.Rush says he uses his record-breaking attempts to promote STEM education. Despite the CDC recently green lighting the resumption of cruises in US waters, Royal Caribbean announced Monday that most of its cruises will be suspended through the end of the year due to the coronavirus.The decision affects cruises domestically and internationally.Last week, Royal Caribbean applauded the CDC for allowing the cruise industry to resume operations.“While we are eager to welcome our guests back on board, we have a lot to do between now and then, and we’re committed to taking the time to do things right,” Royal Caribbean said in a statement. “This includes training our crew in new health and safety protocols and conducting a number of trial sailings to stress-test those protocols in real-world conditions.”Carnival previously announced that most of its US-based cruises are suspended through the end of the year.Before last week, the CDC had a no-sail order through October 31 on all cruises in US waters carrying 250 or more passengers.The CDC said it has identified at least 3,689 coronavirus-related illnesses, and 41 associated deaths, although the CDC cautions these figures are likely an underestimate. 1141
