SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 74-year-old woman was pinned between a U-Haul van and a retaining wall after chasing after the runaway van in Valencia Park.After exiting the van Saturday at about 7:30 a.m., the woman failed to set the parking brake, San Diego Police said. As the van started rolling northbound on Valencia Parkway, the woman gave chase.She was re-entering the vehicle when it veered to the left, struck a fire hydrant, a retaining wall, and another vehicle, police say, pinning the woman between the van and the wall.The woman suffered non life-threatening injuries, including a fractured pelvis.SDPD Traffic Officers were investigating the incident Saturday. 673

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A flying eye hospital is bringing medical care to countries in need. One of the doctors who boarded the Orbis International plane in November is from San Diego.“Orbis International is a unique nonprofit focused on training eye surgeons around the world in advanced techniques of surgery," said Dr. Srini Iyengar, an Encinitas-based Oculoplastic Surgeon who volunteers for Orbis. The ultimate goal is to reduce blindness in countries with inadequate access to care.“In the world, preventable blindness is something that is a big concern, not only for the individual but also populations. Every blind person takes two people out of the workforce, not just them, but also someone who is caring for them," said Dr. Iyengar.The nonprofit just returned from Ghana, where 4 out of 5 people are blind from preventable causes. The plane has an operating room in front and a classroom in the back. “Local doctors, they come to the airplane, and they sit in the front seats and watch on the screen what’s going on in the back, and so they’re watching live surgery being performed," said Dr. Iyengar. The local doctors can then train more eye professionals in their country, helping people long after the plane takes off. Dr. Iyengar says both kids and adults receive care. For many patients, it's the first time they've seen a plane. Orbis International relies on volunteers and private donations.FedEx donated the plane. 1437

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Violent crime in San Diego County rose in the first half of the year for the fifth consecutive year, according to a report released Tuesday by the San Diego Association of Governments. The report by SANDAG's Criminal Justice Research Division found that the mid-year number of violent crimes in the county was 5,545, up from 5,510 last year; 5,421 in 2017; 5,361 in 2016; and 5,330 in 2015. The five-year increase amounts to a 4% bump in violent crime. Reports of property crime went the opposite direction, falling from 30,447 in 2015 to 27,236 in 2019, an 11% decrease. The mid-year numbers of violent and property crimes in 2019 are vastly different from 2009, when the city received 6,256 violent crime reports and 35,204 property crime reports. Violent crime reports dropped 11.4% in that span, mainly because robbery reports fell from 1,931 to 1,411, according to the SANDAG report. Despite the overall drop in robbery reports, this year's number increased 5% compared to the same six-month period last year. Arson reports saw the largest drop from last year to this year -- falling 28% from 190 to 136 -- while homicides dropped from 40 to 38. Reported property crimes fell 22.6% from 2009 to 2019 and residential burglaries saw the biggest decrease in that time, dropping 53.9% from 4,460 to 2,054. Larceny over 0 was the only category to increase from 2009 to 2019, rising from 7,578 to 8,527. Reports of rape fell to 539 after reaching 604 at the midway point of 2018. However, numbers since 2015 may be somewhat deceiving, as California law enforcement broadened the definition of rape in 2015 to include ``male victims, sodomy, penetration with any body part or object, and no longer requires force,'' according to SANDAG Division Director of Criminal Justice Dr. Cynthia Burke. As a result, some crimes that would have been classified as aggravated assaults are now considered rapes and some crimes that would not have been considered violent crimes are now captured in these statistics, Burke said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A beloved Poway tradition is facing accusations of animal cruelty and breaking the law.A lawsuit filed this week claims horses were illegally shocked in the 2018 Poway Rodeo to cause them to buck wildly for crowds. Two animal activist groups filed the suit; Showing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK) and Animal Protection and Rescue League (APRL).Investigators with SHARK captured video during the 2018 Poway Rodeo, which they say proves an illegal device was used. The video appears to show someone with the rodeo shocking a horse in the holding chute just before releasing them into the rodeo arena.California law outlaws an electric prod or similar device from being used on any animal once the animal is in the holding chute, unless necessary to protect the participants and spectators of the rodeo.The plaintiffs are seeking a temporary restraining order before September's rodeo in hopes to get a court order preventing these devices from used.The animal groups notified the San Diego Humane Society of the alleged abuse, but humane law officers say they got the complaint too late to do a proper investigation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A group called "Pillars of the Community" is working to make sure people inside San Diego county jails are registered and able to vote. The non-profit based out of southeast San Diego hires inmates to work from the inside. Their efforts were impacted by the coronavirus pandemic this year but they're still hiring and trying to gather information to support their request to have polling places put inside the jails. 443
