SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A pair of recent restaurant closures are highlighting some of the struggles owners are facing as the industry grapples with major shifts in the way it does business.Last month, Brooklyn Girl in Mission Hills and Urban Solace in North Park both closed their doors. And for one reason or another they're just stumped," says Stephen Zolezzi, the President and CEO of the Food and Beverage Association of San Diego.His association tracks the total number of licenses given out in San Diego to food and beverage vendors. Zolezzi says over the last three years, there's been an increase of 300 licenses. The prices of rent, insurance, and goods have all gone up in the past year. There are also higher labor costs because of minimum wage hikes and low unemployment creating favorable hiring conditions for employees.But cost isn't the only factor."Customer loyalty, today, is really at a low," says Zolezzi. His members say diners now would rather go to multiple places once than become regular, dependable customers at a few spots."You could be doing everything right," he says. Zolezzi says these apps can charge restaurants as much as 30% of the total bill, plus delivery fees, to carry their food. That cuts into already razor-thin margins and in some cases cause restaurants to lose money on each delivery order."If you don't have that factored into your business plan, it could create a negative," he says.Zolezzi says it's now up to the industry to adapt, as restaurant owners need to constantly reinvent their location, menu, and marketing to bring in more customers. 2568

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A local group called the San Diego Rapid Response Network is calling on the community to help asylum-seekers being released throughout San Diego County. On Monday, the group held a press conference explaining how they have been helping the migrants as they are released by ICE, awaiting their asylum hearing. The network is made up of several local churches, the local ACLU, and Casa Cornelia. Volunteers say they have been helping migrants by providing shelter, food, and medical services. They say they've also made travel arrangements to help the migrants get to their final destination. Volunteers tell 10News the migrants are released with no resources and sometimes late at night. The group says they felt the need to help after ICE ended their policy of connecting the migrants with a family member or a sponsor before their release. ICE tells 10News they always plan for releases during the daylight hours but say sometimes things can get delayed since it is a multi-agency effort. They told us of only one instance where the group was released after sundown. The rapid response network is hoping the community will help with monetary donations so they can continue providing their services. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Point Loma grandmother put up Christmas lights to spread cheer during California's stay-home order. It started when Johnene Smith saw Italians singing in solidarity amid a lock down due to the Coronavirus pandemic. She then heard about people putting up Christmas lights to brighten neighbors spirits and something clicked."I'm like I can do that! I don't have to leave my house and people can walk by and see the heart and [spread] just a little joy," Smith said.So she put up a glowing heart in her living room window. "I went and found a piece of cardboard, made a heart and poked little holes and put the lights in it, so they could see my heart is out there for everyone." Smith hoped it would bring some much needed joy during the stay-at-home order which is keeping her from her seven grandchildren. "The youngest is going to be a year old in two weeks and we're not going to be able to go to her birthday party," She said sadly.She took this time to focus instead on what she can control, which is her happiness. Particularly, that means reminiscing about Christmastime, "it was really the last time we had joy before everything started was at Christmastime so why not bring back a little joy in a time where we can't control it."Her display went up Friday sparking her neighbors to light up their own homes.Neighbor Jojo Peters was thrilled at the idea. "When Johnene says let's do lights, I said okay! And I went and dug them out as fast as I could and threw them up!"Both want to spread love and calm.'I just want them to see the hope that's there, and that we're all there for each other,' she said.Smith hopes more San Diegans join in spreading cheer in this time of uncertainty. 1721

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego International Airport TSA employee and worker at an airport vendor have both tested positive for coronavirus, the airport and TSA confirmed.San Diego International officials also confirmed that they were notified by an airport tenant that one of their employees has tested positive for coronavirus. No information was given as to which tenant the employee worked for and when they last worked.TSA officials say the screening officer worked the 2 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. shift at the airport's checkpoint 6, which is located in Terminal 2.
