ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- A homeless man used what little he has to give a selfless gift during a toy drive at a Colorado Walmart.Glen McCarthy walked to Walmart and got a cup of coffee. He was touched by the toy drive that was going on. He ended up buying a Barbie and a Hot Wheels set, but he couldn't stop thinking about a bike he saw."And I looked at that bike, and the bike was marked , but the tag underneath it said ," said McCarthy.It's not a lot of money for some, but for McCarthy, it was nearly everything. He went back to the hotel where he was staying and paid for another night. Back at the hotel, he still couldn't stop thinking about the bike.He walked back to Walmart and asked about the bike since the tag listed two different prices. Once a clerk realized what he was doing, she told him that he could have the bike for ."Another big reason I got to thinking, this is probably going to be my last Christmas. I'm no one, make some little kid happy," said McCarthy.McCarthy has always loved Christmas, and he realizes his time is running out. Doctors recently told him that his cancer is terminal, he has less than a year to live. "It took my losing everything to realize that I'm happier now struggling for everything in my life than I had when I had big money," said McCarthy.Despite being sick and homeless, he continues to volunteer at Senior Support Services in Denver. Staff at the center weren't surprised to hear what McCarthy did at Walmart."Totally sounded like Glen, yeah totally. So it's just amazing, he just has a real caring heart and willing to help people," said Julie Romero, Day Center Manager at Senior Support Services.In this season of giving, McCarthy knows it's about the joy that comes with making someone's day a little brighter. Experts warned that a drop in air pollution from COVID-19 lockdowns would eventually come back as cars returned to the roads and businesses opened up. A study looking at air quality during the pandemic finds while the visible smog may have lifted in some areas, the air pollutants never really went away."It has been assumed that fewer cars on the road might have led to a decline in the level of air pollution outdoors and, in turn, reduce the number of cases of ill health linked to this pollution. However, our study -- contrary to research from places such as Wuhan in China, and Milan -- found no evidence of fine particulate air pollution declining in Scotland because of lockdown,” stated Dr. Ruaraidh Dobson, who led the study at the University of Stirling.Dr. Dobson and his group looked at the amount of fine particulate air pollution (referred to as PM2.5) in the first month of lockdown restrictions in Scotland. There was a 65 percent reduction in the number of vehicles on the roads, however there was little change in the levels of particulates.Looking at particles in the air between mid-March and mi-April of this year, then comparing that data to the same time period over the last few years, the researchers found little change in the amount of air pollution. They did notice a drop in nitrogen dioxide in 2020 samples, a compound specifically linked to car emissions.The team suggests traffic is not a key contributor to outdoor air pollution, and people may possibly be at greater risk of air pollution in their own homes from smoking and cooking appliances in small, enclosed, and poorly ventilated homes.“This could increase adverse health effects overall and also health inequalities – lower income people are more likely to smoke and to smoke indoors, and are likely to have smaller homes leading to higher PM2.5 concentrations from individual sources, due to smaller room volumes,” the study notes.The researchers express concern that if the severity of COVID-19 is related to air pollution exposure and respiratory issues, increased exposure to all sources of air pollution could increase the risk of serious complications from the disease. 2175

Even the White House can't explain President Donald Trump's tweets suggesting California environmental laws have worsened wildfires raging in that state.On Tuesday, administration officials declined to offer any clarity on Trump's series of tweets claiming environmental laws and water regulations in California are hampering the state's ability to fight the wildfires. Wildfire experts and local officials say the President's claims simply don't hold up.Instead, some White House officials admitted to being slightly perplexed at where Trump may have gotten the notion that California's long-running water crisis and a debate over how to divide limited supplies are somehow related to the out of control fires.While Trump's tweets can sometimes be linked to segments on Fox News, there have been no correlating segments linking the two issues in recent days on the channel that frequently serves as presidential inspiration. White House officials also couldn't say whether Trump had discussed the issue with California lawmakers involved in the water debate.What Trump saidTrump launched his unfounded suggestions in a tweet on Sunday claiming: "California wildfires are being magnified & made so much worse by the bad environmental laws which aren't allowing massive amount of readily available water to be properly utilized."He then claimed that the water is "being diverted into the Pacific Ocean."He reiterated those claims on Monday, calling on Democratic California Gov. FALLBROOK (CNS) - A fire broke out Wednesday morning in the garage of a Fallbrook home, authorities said.The non-injury blaze was reported around 5:45 a.m. at a single-story home on Wintergreen Lane off Via Del Robles, west of Interstate 15, NorthCounty Fire Protection District Capt. John Choi said.It took crews roughly an hour and 15 minutes to fully extinguish the fire, which started in the garage and eventually spread to the attic, Choi said.A damage estimate was not immediately available.Investigators from the sheriff's Bomb/Arson unit were sent to the scene, and an investigation into the cause of the blaze was underway. 640
