BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Two Camp Pendleton Marines are being credited with rescuing a family in Bakersfield Tuesday afternoon.According to KGET, Marines Andrew Lucas and Dustin reed, who are both Bakersfield natives, saw a woman who needed help rescuing her sister from the Kern River at Hart Park.The two rushed over to help when they realized the woman was hanging onto a tree branch, struggling to get out of the water. Her sister was trying to pull her from the river.KGET reports that her sister’s ex-boyfriend was also stuck trying to hold her from being swept away by the current.When rescue crews arrived on scene, Lucas and Reed had already brought the family to safety. 686

As survivors describe the terror-filled moments after a student opened fire at Santa Fe High School, killing 10 people, stories of heroism are coming to light.One of them is about Christian "Riley" Garcia, a student who showed remarkable courage and selflessness during the shooting.Garcia, 15, died Friday while blocking an art classroom door to keep other students safe from the gunshots, said the family's pastor, Keenan Smith."He was holding the door shut when the shooter was trying to gain access into that art room ... the shooter shot through the door, taking his (Garcia's) life," Smith told CNN. But Garcia succeeded in holding the shooter back long enough to allow other students to escape out a back exit to safety.The pastor said he was with Garcia's family Friday night when other students told officials that the teen had saved their lives."He was against the door trying to help his teacher, trying to help another student, and trying to shield the others there," Smith said."That's not what's supposed to happen to a 15-year-old's life that he has to make those decisions. But he made them without even thinking about it, because it was his heart. This is who he was as an individual."Smith who baptized Garcia, described him as a fun-loving kid who loved football and enjoyed being outdoors. He hopes Garcia's brave sacrifice will bring some comfort to his family."This doesn't ease the pain any. It doesn't stop the void that will forever be there, but it does bring a measure of peace," he said.Even though all the victims of the massacre have been identified, Garcia's family has not yet been able to see his body."They (Garcia's family) are praying and hoping that they will be able to be reunited with him and see their son," Smith said.Garcia and his family attended nearby Crosby Church, which held a memorial service Monday night for the slain teen. 1888

At least five Marines assigned to the prestigious ceremonial Silent Drill Platoon in Washington were placed in pretrial confinement in recent days due to allegations they were involved in hazing at least one Marine at the unit, according to three defense officials.Hearings that took place this week resulted in one Marine being released from confinement but all could still face charges as the Naval Criminal Investigative Service has taken over the matter.The number of alleged victims has not been made public but the allegations came to light when one Marine came forward. Officials say a video had been made allegedly showing some Marines hitting at least one other Marine. It is not publicly known if that victim is the Marine who came forward.The platoon is a 24-man rifle unit that performs a drill exhibition largely in silence. It was founded in 1948 and performed for presidents and top officials as well as communities around the country tossing and spinning 10-pound M1 rifles with fixed bayonets.Multiple performances of the drill team were canceled in recent weeks due to the ongoing investigation, according to officials. The Marines did not publicize the reason for those cancellations or which performances were affected. The Marines said they began an investigation immediately at the unit, before turning it over the NCIS.The unit and the Marines are well known in the Washington community where they reside. As the debate over police defunding wages on in parts of the country, officials in Albuquerque, New Mexico have found a middle ground.Mayor Tim Keller recently introduced a plan to strip the police department of million each year to help create and fund a new department that would respond to certain 911 calls instead of police.He says the city is the first in the country to do this."It’s a public health approach to public safety,” said Keller.The new department would consist of service workers, public health personnel, and specialists who would respond to calls related to homelessness, mental illness, and drug overdoses."For modern history, every city has said we’ll either send police or fire,” said Keller. “It’s about restructuring, institutionally, how we respond.”"We’re not the experts. We go over there and a lot of times our officers don’t know what to do,” added Albuquerque Police Chief Michael Geier.Geirer says the introduction of the new department comes as a relief. His police department is already short-staffed with officers, so handing these calls off to specialized personnel would not only help his department but the public.“We’ll be able to handle the higher-priority calls, and then our response time, and our community engagement," he said. "There will be more trust in the community.”Greier says, to a degree, the Albuquerque Police Department has already started delegating certain calls to the fire department and it has spared officers from responding to nearly 15,000 calls in just the last few months--many of which could keep an officer on scene for hours.“We want to get past responding to the symptom of the root cause,” said Albuquerque Chief Administrative Officer Sarita Nair. “We want to get down to that root cause and start addressing issues there.”Mayor Keller says the move to create the new department was only made recently, so there will be substantial planning and public input before it actually goes into effect. 1979

Authorities are currently hunting a suspect in central Tennessee after a Dickson County sheriff's deputy was shot and killed on Wednesday. The suspect has been added to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation's Most Wanted list.Officials are searching for 31-year-old Steven Joshua Wiggins west of Nashville in connection with the death of Sgt. Daniel Baker with the Dickson County Sheriff's Office.Baker was killed Wednesday morning after responding to a call about a suspicious vehicle. He was found inside his patrol car. Wiggins, who has been arrested for aggravated assault and misdemeanor vandalism in the past, is considered to be armed and dangerous. He’s been added to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s Top 10 Most Wanted list. The reward for his capture has been increased to ,500.   843
