SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman was injured by a hit-and-run driver early Sunday while walking on the curb line of a street in the Midway District.The victim was walking at 2:56 a.m. in the 3800 block of Camino Del Rio West when an unknown vehicle struck her and fled the scene, according to Officer S. Foster of the San Diego Police Department.She was taken to a hospital for treatment of her injuries, Foster said.The Traffic Division of the police department is investigating the hit and run. 497
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Ex-Poway Unified School District Superintendent John Collins pleaded guilty Wednesday to a misdemeanor financial disclosure charge and was immediately sentenced to five years probation in a plea deal in a case in which he was accused of misappropriating more than 5,000 in public funds.The Poway Unified School District and Collins also reached a settlement in a civil lawsuit related to the allegations, which is expected to be finalized Wednesday night. That settlement involves Collins paying the district 5,000 over a period of time, according to Judge Frederic Link."This is basically a win-win for a lot of people," Link said.Collins is required to abide by the terms of the civil settlement and follow the law as part of his probation, or face the risk of once again facing the criminal charges.After several days of testimony at a preliminary hearing -- a proceeding held to determine if there is enough evidence to proceed to trial -- Collins pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge relating to his failure to declare outside income to the Poway school board. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A U.S. Army veteran pleaded not guilty in San Diego Wednesday to a pair of assault with a deadly weapon charges for allegedly stabbing an active-duty serviceman who, along with a friend, pointed out that the veteran's Private First Class badge was upside down on his uniform.Marc Dominguez, 42, who served in the Army in 2003 and 2004 as a Private First Class E-3, was ordered held on ,000 bail.Deputy District Attorney Kelly Rand told Judge Maureen Hallahan that Dominguez stabbed the active-duty serviceman and lunged at the victim's friend with a knife about 11:30 p.m. last Thursday at a Gaslamp Quarter bar after they questioned whether the defendant was in the military because a patch on his uniform was not attached correctly.The active-duty serviceman was stabbed in the head and bicep and sliced his fingers while trying to get the knife away from Dominguez, the prosecutor said. The other man wasn't hurt.Based on the prosecutor's statements in court, the judge found that Dominguez was a danger to the community and raised his bail from ,000 to ,000 and ordered him to stay away from the victims.A readiness conference was set for Nov. 28 and a preliminary hearing for Nov. 30. 1230
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspect in a series of residential burglaries and auto thefts in El Cajon was arrested Thursday.Davon Lee, 20, was driving a vehicle stolen during one of the home- invasion thefts when San Diego police took him into custody Thursday afternoon, El Cajon police Lt. Kevin MacArthur said.Lee, an El Cajon resident, is suspected of committing seven burglaries in the East County city in recent weeks.In each case, the intruder entered an occupied home through an open door or window, located car keys inside and then stole a vehicle from the premises, MacArthur said. 591
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - More than 1.3 million ballots had been received by the San Diego County Registrar of Voters by mid-afternoon today, with around 51,000 votes cast at polling locations so far.The San Diego County Registrar's Office reported 1.36 million ballots collected by mid-afternoon out of the 1.95 million registered voters in the county.With county polling locations open early, about 126,000 residents were able to cast their votes in person over the past four days, the Registar's Office said.Mail-in ballots were sent to all registered voters in the county on Oct. 5, even those who had not requested one. Voters who prefer to cast their ballots at their assigned polling place on Election Day can do so until 8 p.m.An in-person voting location tool can be found on the county's voting website, SDvote.com.County voters also have until 8 p.m. to drop off mail ballots at 125 drop-off locations throughout the county, which can found on the Registrar's website.Registrar of Voters Michael Vu said his office is working with county public health services to ensure the health and safety of election workers and voters. Personal protective equipment and sanitation supplies will be provided to staffers so they can conduct the election process safely.Voters casting ballots in person were instructed to bring a face mask and plan to maintain social distance.Locations of vote centers were chosen and configured to allow for queuing and voting while maintaining six feet of social distance. Masks will be required inside, but residents unable or unwilling to wear them will be allowed to vote curbside.Officials noted that the need to social distance may create longer lines than usual at in-person locations.
