BEIJING, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Along with more than 3,000 teachers and students, Premier Wen Jiabao attended the opening of a temporary middle school in southwest China's quake zone as the new semester started on Monday.     Beichuan Middle School was among the hardest-hit schools in the May 12 earthquake. BEIJING, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Friday went to Beichuan County of Mianyang City to visit people affected by the southwest China earthquake, encouraging them to be confident in overcoming hardships caused by the disaster.      Hu first visited quake victims in Shengli Village, Leigu Town of Beichuan. More than 1,000 out of the 18,000 population in Leigu Town died or were missing in the quake. The survivors who had been rescued must be transferred to safer places in time, and children who lost their parents and elders who lost their family members in the quake must be properly cared for.     Also Friday morning, Premier Wen Jiabao told Chinese media on a train in Sichuan that saving lives remained the top priority almost four days after the quake.     "We won't give up if there is even the slightest hope of finding more survivors," he said.     The death toll from the powerful earthquake rose to 22,069 nationwide as of 2 p.m. Friday, while 168,669 people were injured, according to the emergency response office of the State Council.

GENEVA, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Related parties should enhance diplomatic efforts and show flexibility in order to find a negotiated solution to the Iranian nuclear issue, a senior Chinese diplomat said here on Saturday.     "Currently there is a rare opportunity for promoting the resumption of negotiations on the Iranian nuclear issue," said Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Jieyi, who represented China at a meeting here with Iran's top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili.     "Enhanced diplomatic efforts and flexibility are needed for an early resumption of negotiations so that a long-term, comprehensive and appropriate solution could be found for the nuclear issue," he said.     Saturday's meeting was led by EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana and attended by senior diplomats from the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany.     The United States was represented by Undersecretary of State William Burns at the meeting. His participation was seen as a shift of long-standing U.S. policy toward Iran, as Washington had always insisted that it would not talk with Tehran unless it halts its uranium enrichment activities.     "It's highly significant that for the first time the political directors of all six countries with Solana were talking with our Iranian colleagues," Liu told reporters.     "It was the shared hope of all parties participating in the meeting that we find a negotiated solution to the nuclear issue," he said.     Both Solana and Jalili said Saturday's meeting was positive and constructive and promoted understanding of each other's positions.     They also agreed to talk again by phone or in person in about two weeks.     At the meeting, Iran failed to give a clear answer to a package of incentives presented by the six countries last month over the resumption of nuclear negotiations.     "We hope very much we get the answer and we hope it will be done in a couple of weeks," Solana told a press conference following the meeting.     The package of incentives suggests that Iran get a temporary reprieve from economic and financial sanctions in exchange for freezing its enrichment activities. Preliminary negotiations over a permanent halt could then begin.     "The package is supported by all six powers ... we think if negotiations could be resumed on this basis and finally a negotiated solution could be found, it will be a very good way out," Liu said.

BUCHAREST, May 6 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin said here Monday that China and Romania share the same task of opening up a new era in their all-round partnership of friendship and cooperation.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top political consultative body, delivered a speech at a session of the Romanian Senate on Monday evening.     In his speech, Jia explained China's policy and concept of peaceful development and mutually beneficial, win-win cooperation with other countries. He emphasized the willingness to further deepen friendship between China and Romania and advance China's relations with Central and Eastern Europe in an all-round way. They should maintain high-level contact and carry out even closer exchanges and cooperation between their governments, legislatures and political parties so as to lay a solid political foundation for sustained development of bilateral links.     Secondly, the two countries should expand trade and economic cooperation. They should expand trade and investment according to the principle of mutual complementarity, equality and mutual benefits. They should continue to give a full play to the role of their joint economic commission, encourage and support their companies to increase contact and explore new ways and methods of cooperation.     Thirdly, the two countries should deepen cultural and humanitarian exchanges. They should continue exchanges and cooperation in such fields as culture, science, technology, education, sports, public health and tourism so as to add new content to bilateral links. They should further expand people-to-people exchanges, exchanges among local authorities and young people so as to consolidate the foundation of China-Romania friendship and add vigor to the development of bilateral links.     Fourthly, the two countries should step up coordination and cooperation on international issues. They should join effort to build a fair, unbiased and rule-based multi-lateral system with the United Nations assuming the core role.     Jia said China-Romania friendship is deep-rooted and fruitful and will enjoy an even better future. He called for the people of the two countries to join hands in strengthening their traditional friendship and all-round cooperation.     Jia arrived in Bucharest Sunday for a four-day official goodwill visit to Romania. Romania is the first leg of his four-nation Europe tour, which will also take him to Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia.
