CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Jeff Miranda loved his job with the Border Patrol. His entire 17-year career was in San Diego County. Now, he’s battling a deadly disease that forced him into early retirement.Jeff and Liz Miranda live in Chula Vista. In early 2015, they started to notice something wasn’t right. “He was doing a presentation at work and all of a sudden, his voice just wouldn’t project,” Liz said.They then noticed fasciculation, which Liz described as small tremors throughout his body. His speech was also becoming increasingly slurred. “We had a feeling it was something neurological at this point,” Liz said.Several months later, they received the official diagnosis. It was ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. It is also often called Lou Gehrig’s disease. It is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, according to the ALS Association.“We were… somewhat psychologically prepared by the time he got officially diagnosed because we had already suspected it for a couple months,” Liz said.Liz said, however, it was heart stopping when they first found out ALS was a possibility. “Your mind [goes] a million miles an hour,” she said.Jeff, an avid cyclist and outdoorsman, is now confined to a wheelchair and uses eye gaze technology to communicate. “As horrible [as] ALS is and given that there is still no cure, I feel very lucky about today’s technology.This computer device and the chair didn’t exist before. Both devices have been an enormous help to me and my family,” he said.They have made modifications to their home, including a wheelchair ramp and lift. Liz said Jeff still has his sense of humor and is the same person cognitively. He joked that he charges five dollars for a ride in the wheelchair lift.“I think that sometimes people will see him and talk to me and ask me questions for him,” Liz said. “He can answer you. It just takes a second to respond.” There is currently no cure to the disease. The average survival time is 3 years, according to the ALS Association.About 20 percent of people with ALS live five years, 10 percent will survive ten years, and five percent will live 20 years or more.“I think on a whole, we want to continue living our life. It’s all about attitude really. We could be sitting here miserable and then we’d miss out on the time that we have,” Liz said.There was one moment during the interview that brought tears to the couple. That was when Jeff spoke about his wife’s support.“The real victims are my family and loved ones which has been my biggest struggle living with this disease. My wife has been the most positive person that I have ever met. Having her by my side always with a smile has given me enormous happiness and hope. She has always made me feel like the luckiest man in the world,” Jeff said, as his eyes started to well up.Jeff and Liz have been together for 24 years, meeting on their first day of college in Florida. They got married in 2001 and have two teenage daughters.The battle against ALS not only has emotional and physical impacts, but it is also taking a huge financial toll.Liz had to quit her job in order to take care of Jeff, who is now 100 percent dependent. They are worried about losing their home. Jeff has exhausted the remainder of his paid time off. His fellow Border Patrol agents have donated some of their time to help the family, but that is also soon running out.“We’ll have to leave California, which would be a snowball effect because we leave California, he leaves all his doctors. We lose all our friends and our family that are here, our support system,” Liz said.Liz said she reluctantly set up a GoFundMe page to help with expenses. “We’ve never had to ask for anything. Never wanted to, so that was very hard for us,” she said.Through the campaign, though, she discovered the kindness of both friends and strangers. She said the support “melts your heart.”“ALS has stolen my abilities to do the things I used to love, plus a million other things most people take for granted. CINCINNATI — Cincinnati police, who were told a car was stolen with an infant still inside, now say that a child was never in danger and that the person who reported the car stolen lied to get a quicker response from police.Just before 10 p.m. Thursday evening, a 2010 Mercury Milan was reported stolen from a BP gas station in the 1300 block of Hopple Street with a 10-month-old infant still inside.Police caught up with two suspects in the car shortly before 11 p.m., and the suspects fled the vehicle about five miles away from where it was reported stolen.Officers did not find a child inside the vehicle, and the suspects evaded capture, police said.Cincinnati police said the person who reported the car stolen changed his story about 45 minutes into their investigation, saying the infant was not in the car when it was stolen."He stated that there's some money in the car, and that's why he told us there was a 10-month-old in the car, because he knew it would be a top priority for us if this was the case," Cincinnati Police Capt. (KGTV) - A woman who was struck by a vehicle in Chula Vista Thursday night died of her injuries in the hospital, according to Chula Vista Police.Dispatchers received several 911 calls about the crash at Fourth Ave and C Street at 9:15 p.m. The location is near a CVS pharmacy and Jack in the Box.Officers said they found the 57-year-old victim in the intersection with serious injuries. (KGTV) - Legislation needed to advance the Chula Vista Bayfront Project was signed Friday by Governor Jerry Brown.Assembly Bill 2646 authorizes the transfer of a 97-acre parcel of land in Chula Vista to the San Diego Unified Port District. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Some unusual notices are showing up on front doors in the South Bay, sparking confusion and worries.On the first Saturday in May came the first encounter. Off J Street, Tony heard a knock and saw a casually dressed man at his door from a company called Pacific Home Remodeling. "He was looking to inspect homes for estimates of remodeling costs," said Tony, who asked us not to use his real name.Tony is a renter and told the man he wasn't interested. "I had to continually repeat, 'I'm not interested' before he finally left. He came back a second time a few days later - and the same situation," said Tony.Once again, the man was asked to leave. A week later, Tony and his cousin found a flyer stuck on their front door. It read 'NOTICE' in big block letters, and included a name and cell number, along with 'We were here for inspection and we missed you. Please call to arrange a new inspection.' The company at the bottom of the paper: Pacific Home Remodeling. A confused Tony set it aside. "I thought maybe they meant to put this notice on another house," said Tony.Then on Tuesday, the man turned up again. Tony's cousin was the only on home and heard a banging at the door. He was just inside the door, when he saw the man with his hand on the knob outside."He uses me cousin's name and my name saying we authorized him to come inspect home and look around. That wasn't true. My cousin told him to leave, and 10 minutes later, he returns and says he just got approval from me. Problem for him was I was on the phone," said Tony. Despite the notice, neither of them had given approval for an inspection. Tony later posted the incident on Nextdoor. Neighbors reported finding the same notices on their doors. One claimed a salesperson tried to talk his way into home past a confused elderly woman. A spokesperson with the company said they're looking into Tony's claims, but defended the use of the notices as "marketing material." Tony doesn't buy it. "It's deceptive. Very official looking. They put these notices on doors and hope people don't communicate with one another, and gain access to the house. It's very concerning," said Tony.Tony attempted to file a police report with Chula Vista Police, but says he was told there wasn't evidence a crime was committed.According to the Contractors State License Board, the Los-Angeles based Pacific Home Remodeling has had several citations dating back to 2015 and was put on probation. The latest accusations include poor work and failure to obtain permits. Hearing dates set for later this month and June could determine what happens to the company's license. 2764
