Federal officials have charged the suspected gunman in an April mass shooting at a California synagogue in which one person was killed and three injured with 109 total hate crime-related violations.Additionally, 19-year-old John Earnest faces a charge over a fire deliberately set at an Escondido mosque in late March.Under the federal charges, the suspect faces a possible death sentence. In a federal complaint filed Thursday, the suspect allegedly called 911 after the April 27 shooting and told a dispatcher, “I just shot up a synagogue. I’m just trying to defend my nation from the Jewish people … They’re destroying our people … I opened fire at a synagogue. I think I killed some people.”Federal officials said the suspect obtained his gun one day before the attack from a Federal Firearm Licensed dealer in San Diego, by way of Fort Worth, Texas.Lori Kaye-Gilbert, 60, died in the shooting, and three others — Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, Almog Peretz and his 8-year-old niece — were injured. 1007

Hey, sleepyheads. What you believe about sleep may be nothing but a pipe dream. Many of us have notions about sleep that have little basis in fact and may even be harmful to our health, according to researchers at NYU Langone Health's School of Medicine, who conducted a study published Tuesday in the journal Sleep Health."There's such a link between good sleep and our waking success," said lead study investigator Rebecca Robbins, a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Population Health at NYU Langone Health. "And yet we often find ourselves debunking myths, whether it's to news outlets, friends, family or a patient."Robbins and her colleagues combed through 8,000 websites to discover what we thought we knew about healthy sleep habits and then presented those beliefs to a hand-picked team of sleep medicine experts. They determined which were myths and then ranked them by degree of falsehood and importance to health. Here are 10 very wrong, unhealthy assumptions we often make about sleep, an act in which we spend an estimated third of our lives -- or, if we lived to 100, about 12,227 combined days.Stop yawning. It's time to put these unsound sleep myths to bed.1. Adults need five or fewer hours of sleep"If you wanted to have the ability to function at your best during the day, not to be sick, to be mentally strong, to be able to have the lifestyle that you would enjoy, how many hours do you have to sleep?" asked senior study investigator Girardin Jean-Louis, a professor in the Department of Population Health."It turns out a lot of people felt less than five hours of sleep a night was just fine," he said. "That's the most problematic assumption we found."We're supposed to get between seven and 10 hours of sleep each night, depending on our age, but the US 1806

Houston police believe the remains of a child found in southwest Arkansas on Friday may belong to missing 4-year-old Maleah Davis."Do we believe that it's possibly her? Yes. But can we confirm it right now? No," Houston Police Executive Assistant Chief Troy Finner told reporters."If it's not Maleah, it's somebody's child," he said. The focus of the search moved to Arkansas after the suspect in her disappearance allegedly confessed to dumping her body there, nearly a month after Maleah was reported missing in Texas.Earlier on Friday, suspect Derion Vence told an activist who visited him in jail that he had dumped Maleah's body in Arkansas."One thing he wanted to make clear to me was (that) what happened to Maleah was an accident, he says it was an accident. And he confessed to me where he dumped the body," Houston community activist Quanell X told CNN affiliate 884

For Melissa Swensrud, a painting of her dog, Elsa, hangs in the family room of her Bethesda, Maryland home. To her, the colorful portrait captures Elsa’s sweet and curious personality shortly before she died.“It has always been an incredible source of happiness for me,” she says. “I never have felt sadness looking at it because it’s that moment of where she was in her life.”When Swensrud looks at it, there’s a part of the painting that helps bring it to life.“Through the eyes, Erica captures the spirit of the dog. It’s very evident,” Swensrud says. “It’s fun. She starts that way, because you don’t really know how the paintings going to evolve.”Erica Eriksdotter is the artist behind the painting. Pet portraits have now become a specialty at her 766

Federal regulators are setting up a new three-digit number to reach a suicide prevention hotline in order to make it easier to seek help and reduce the stigma associated with mental health.Once it's implemented, people will just need to dial 988, similar to calling 911 for emergencies or 311 for city services. Currently, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline uses a 10-digit number, 800-273-TALK (8255). Callers are routed to one of 163 crisis centers, where counselors answered 2.2 million calls last year.A law last year required the Federal Communications Commission to study assigning a three-digit number for suicide prevention. The FCC said in a report that there is overwhelming support for a three-digit number because it would be easier for distressed people to get help.Thursday's vote starts the months-long process to make that happen. The next step is a comment period before the FCC moves to an order. The government's action comes as suicide rates have increased across the U.S. over the past two decades, and dramatically so — by more than 30% — in half of U.S. states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There were 45,000 suicide deaths in 2016. The report noted that from 1999 to 2016, suicide increased in every state except Nevada. It also noted that suicide rates are higher with at-risk populations, including veterans and the LGBTQ community. The new, shorter number would likely lead to more calls, which in turn would mean more expenses for crisis centers already struggling to keep up. If the number of calls to the hotline doubled, centers would need an extra million a year to handle the increase, the FCC said, citing the federal agency that funds the hotline, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The FCC determined that it would be better to have a new number that's only for the hotline, rather than one that's currently used for other purposes, such as 911. Advocates say that having a dedicated number, along with a message that mental health is of equivalent importance as medical emergencies, could help reduce the stigma of calling the number. 2150
