NEW YORK (AP) — The operator of Ann Taylor and Lane Bryant filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Thursday, the latest retailer to do so during the pandemic. Ascena Retail Group, which operates nearly 3,000 stores mostly at malls, has been dragged down by debt and weak sales for years. In a press release, the company said they were closing all of their plus-size stores Catherines.The company also said in the release that they plan to "strategically reduce its footprint with the closing of a significant number of Justice stores and a select number of Ann Taylor, LOFT, Lane Bryant, and Lou & Grey stores."It joins other retailers that have filed for bankruptcy in recent weeks, including Brooks Brothers, Neiman Marcus, J.C. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un responded to President Donald Trump's speech before the United Nations where Trump vowed to "totally destroy" the nation if it threatened the United States or its allies. Although the two nations are not formally at war, clearly the two leaders are in a war of words. "The United States has great strength and patience, but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea. Rocket Man is on a suicide mission for himself and for his regime," Trump said earlier this week. Kim issued a statement Thursday evening, not backing down to Trump's hard-line stance."I will make the man holding the prerogative of the supreme command in the US pay dearly for his speech calling for totally destroying the DPRK," Kim said. "Whatever Trump might have expected, he will face results beyond expected." "He is unfit to hold the prerogative of supreme command of a country and he is surely a rogue and a gangster fond of playing with fire rather than a politician," Kim added.Both sides have stepped up their posture toward one another. NEWWARK, N.J. – OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma has pleaded guilty to three criminal charges and formally admitted its role in the opioid crisis.Tuesday's plea before a judge in Newark, New Jersey, is part of a larger settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice that also includes resolving civil claims.The Stamford, Connecticut-based company is to pay 5 million as part of the deal, while billion in forfeitures and penalties could be waived because of a proposed deal to resolve thousands of other lawsuits.Advocates are upset that the guilty plea applies only to the company and not executives or members of the Sackler family who own it.During Tuesday’s hearing, Purdue Pharma admitted to impeding the US. New research suggests that antibodies the immune system makes to fight the new coronavirus may only last a few months in people with mild illness, but that doesn’t mean protection also is gone or that it won’t be possible to develop an effective vaccine.“Infection with this coronavirus does not necessarily generate lifetime immunity,” but antibodies are only part of the story, said Dr. Buddy Creech, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University. He had no role in the work, published Tuesday in the New England Journal of Medicine.The immune system remembers how to make fresh antibodies if needed and other parts of it also can mount an attack, he said.Antibodies are proteins that white blood cells called B cells make to bind to the virus and help eliminate it. The earliest ones are fairly crude but as infection goes on, the immune system becomes trained to focus its attack and to make more precise antibodies.Dr. Otto Yang and others at the University of California, Los Angeles, measured these more precise antibodies in 30 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 and four housemates presumed to have the disease. Their average age was 43 and most had mild symptoms.Researchers found that the antibodies had a half-life of 73 days, which means that half of them would be gone after that much time. It dovetails with a previous report from China also suggesting antibodies quickly fade.The results “call for caution regarding antibody-based ‘immunity passports,’ herd immunity, and perhaps vaccine durability,” the California authors write.That’s true, Creech said, but other parts of the immune system also help confer protection. Besides churning out antibodies, B cells develop a memory so they know how to do that again if needed.“They would get called into action very quickly when there’s a new exposure to the virus.
