GREENCASTLE, Indiana — Protesters at DePauw University in Indiana interrupted a press conference meant to discuss recent racist writings on and near campus, one day after students demonstrated at an on-campus event led by actress Jenna Fischer. After five incidents of racial slurs were written across campus in the last two weeks, protesters interrupted actress Jenna Fischer's talk Tuesday night. On Wednesday, university officials held a press conference to discuss the incidents and Tuesday's protest. About 10 minutes into the press conference Wednesday, DePauw President Mark McCoy learned about protesters outside the doors, wanting inside. McCoy and the other officials allowed the protesters inside, where they chanted, "Meet our demands. We are not safe." For about 20 more minutes, McCoy and the group discussed the incidents, and what the university is doing to stop future incidents from happening. "We are all together addressing every issue that has happened on this campus," McCoy said. "We are committed to addressing these issues. George Clooney wrote an open letter to the survivors of the Parkland school shooting, praising them for making him "proud of his country again."The letter was published on Friday in The Guardian's website, where student journalists from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School are guest editing the newspaper's online coverage of the March for Our Lives event on Saturday.In an editor's note published with the letter, Emma Dowd, Lauren Newman and Rebecca Schneid, co-editors-in-chief of the school paper Eagle Eye, said they reached out to a number of politicians and celebrities for interviews, including George Clooney and his wife Amal, who donated 0,000 to support the march."They turned us down on the interview, but we loved the letter George sent us back," the three students wrote.In the letter, Clooney thanked them for what they are doing to promote safer gun laws, saying, "Amal and I stand behind you, in support of you, in gratitude to you.""Amal and I are 100% behind you and will be marching in DC on the 24th, but we both feel very strongly that this is your march. HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. — Several dogs were found dead in a Hernando County, Florida home that neighbors say no one has lived in since Hurricane Irma.Neighbors are furious now knowing they were living next to a home where dogs were suffering inside. "I don’t know how any human could do that," said neighbor Patt Pierce. Pierce said on Tuesday, a construction crew working nearby notified her of a dead dog visible through the window of her neighbor’s home."Our houses are far enough apart where we can’t hear inside the home," said Pierce. Neighbors tell Scripps station WFTS in Tampa that no one has lived in the home since they saw a truck moving furniture out the week before Hurricane Irma. They believe the dogs were abandoned in the home with no food or water."They did not die easy. Imagine being in that home and starving to dead and those animals one by one dropping, she needs to go to jail." said neighbor Chris Kirby, referring to the homeowner. WFTS contacted the homeowner’s attorney who tells us his client, who prefers to go by the name Wendy Lauren Kopp, was letting a man live in the home and he is the one who left the dogs there. The attorney also tells us his client is cooperating with authorities and is not a suspect in the case.The sheriff’s office said the dogs were so decomposed, they haven't been able to accurately count how many are in there. They say their investigation is still ongoing and have not yet announced suspects in the case. Neighbors, however, say they are still heartbroken and wish they could've done more. "For this to happen, all of us are carrying a little guilt like we could’ve done more. We could’ve broke in we could’ve kept calling," said Kirby. "We have a no kill shelter. We have rescue groups. We have someone in the community that would take the dogs," said Pierce.  1902
