LIMA, Peru (AP) — Archaeologists in northern Peru say they have found evidence of what could be the world's largest single case of child sacrifice.The pre-Columbian burial site, known as Las Llamas, contains the skeletons of 140 children who were between the ages of five and 14 when they were ritually sacrificed during a ceremony about 550 years ago, experts who led the excavation told The Associated Press on Friday.The site, located near the modern day city of Trujillo, also contained the remains of 200 young llamas apparently sacrificed on the same day.The burial site was apparently built by the ancient Chimu empire. It is thought the children were sacrificed as floods caused by the El Nino weather pattern ravaged the Peruvian coastline."They were possibly offering the gods the most important thing they had as a society, and the most important thing is children because they represent the future," said Gabriel Prieto, an archaeology professor at Peru's National University of Trujillo, who has led the excavation, along with John Verano of Tulane University."Llamas were also very important because these people had no other beasts of burden, they were a fundamental part of the economy," Prieto said, adding that the children were buried facing the sea, while the llamas faced the Andes Mountains to the east.Excavation work at the burial site started in 2011, but news of the findings was first published on Thursday by National Geographic, which helped finance the investigation.Prieto said that besides the bones, researchers also found footprints that have survived rain and erosion. The small footprints indicate the children were marched to their deaths from Chan Chan, an ancient city a mile away from Las Llamas, he said.Verano said the children's skeletons contained lesions on their breastbones, which were probably made by a ceremonial knife. Dislocated ribcages suggest that whoever was performing the sacrifices may have been trying to extract the children's hearts.Jeffrey Quilter, the director of the Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology at Harvard University, described it as a "remarkable discovery."In an email, Quilter told the AP the site provides "concrete evidence" that large scale sacrifices of children occurred in ancient Peru."Reports of very large sacrifices are known from other parts of the world, but it is difficult to know if the numbers are exaggerated or not," Quilter wrote.Quilter is heading a team of scientists who will analyze DNA samples from the children's remains to see if they were related and figure out which areas of the Chimu empire the sacrificed youth came from.Several ancient cultures in the Americas practiced human sacrifices including the Mayans, the Aztecs and the Incas, who conquered the Chimu empire in the late 15th century. But the mass sacrifice of children is something that has rarely been documented.The Las Llamas site is located in a shantytown, and has been fenced off to stop illegal developers from building homes on it.Prieto says the site shows how in Peru history can be just around the corner."This site surrounded by houses in a working class neighborhood can tell us a lot about a macabre event that is perhaps one of the darkest moments in our history," Prieto said. LAKE CLARKE SHORES, Fla. — A Florida family is securing their home after two of their cats were shot in the back with a pellet gun, forcing them to be euthanized. Police are looking for whoever is responsible. First, it was Peanut, a black kitten, and then Fritz, a 4-year-old white and orange cat back in March and April, respectively.They came home to their owner, Debbie Hiatt, with a wound in their back and their hind legs dragging back in the spring. “The biggest thing for me was just wanting to find someplace else to live. Because I don’t trust anyone,” Hiatt said in an interview. In X-rays, you can see a single pellet lodged in each one of their spines A veterinarian would have no choice but to put them down. Peanut was the hardest. “His front was so full of life but nothing in the back. Even Fritz was hard, but the baby? It was a lot harder with the baby,” Hiatt said. Since then, taking no chances, she and her husband John had cameras installed around their home and secured their back porch for their remaining cats and dogs. She says six other cats have inexplicably gone missing over the last year. “It’s not fair to the animals. They don’t know. And what they could have done is come to me and said 'hey, keep your animals out of my yard.' And then at that point in time, we would have done this probably a lot sooner. And then I would have still have Peanut. And Fritz,” she said. Lake Clark Shores police say they have identified a person of interest but haven’t made an arrest yet.“Catch the person. But as we head into the weekend, the city's 7 p.m. curfew continues and some fear there could be more violent riots.Colorful murals now cover La Mesa businesses, destroyed by rioters and looters last weekend. For Kenny Siler, Friday is a big win. "It means the world to be able to come in here," Siler said.He drove his legally blind friends to the Vons grocery store on the first day it reopened. "If there's a good sale, [I get] a whole bunch of Gatorade, and if there's a good chunk of meat I can smoke," he laughed. He's one of the hundreds of La Mesans supporting local businesses as soon as they can. Some shop, some clean, some donate.Next to Vons, California Coast Credit Union still has not reopened. "Both ATM's and inside, everything has been just butchered," the credit union's Sr. VP of Communications, Rene McKee said.They were victims of the riots, but they are also stepping up to help. Friday, the credit union donated ,000 to the La Mesa Business Disaster Recovery Fund. The online Gofundme account continues to grow every hour, far past the original goal of ,000."It's helping to bolster the spirits of the residents here in La Mesa and these small businesses," McKee said. LAKE ALFRED, Fla. -- A Polk County, Florida family is outraged after they say their 7-year-old was forced to scrub school floors with a toothbrush as punishment.The elementary student reportedly misbehaved last week at Lake Alfred Elementary, when her teacher sent the student next door for "corrective action."According to the family, the 7-year-old was told to scrub the floors with a toothbrush.They also claim teachers told her to clean the entire floor, and when she was done she was told to then clean the counters.Family members say she was forced to do this throughout the day and was not able to participate in regular classroom activities. The family says they were not made aware of the misbehavior or the punishment their daughter received.
