SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three people are in custody following a chase through North Park and University Heights Monday evening. The chase started around 5:30 p.m. at an unknown location after police tried to make contact with the suspects following a possible hit-and-run in a stolen vehicle. Mid-chase, officers called off the pursuit after it was determined the suspect was traveling too fast. At one point during the chase, two of the suspects could be seen jumping out of the vehicle near Florida Street and Polk Avenue. A third suspect was detained a short time later. Video from Sky10 shows at least one suspect leaping out of the car on the 3000 block of Palm Street before leaping into brush in a nearby canyon. 725

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Three animal rights activists have been banned from SeaWorld San Diego following a demonstration at an orca show this year.A San Diego Superior Court order issued Thursday banned three protestors affiliated with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) from entering SeaWorld San Diego and Aquatica San Diego, SeaWorld said in a statement.Included in that ban were Ricky Rodriguez, Lyanne Fernandez, and Lisa Lange, PETA's senior vice president of communications. The order lasts for three years.RELATED: Actor James Cromwell protests SeaWorld San Diego orca show"We are very pleased with this court order," Marilyn Hannes, president of SeaWorld San Diego, said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The statistics for foster kids aging out of the system are grim. According to the National Foster Youth Institute, after reaching the age of 18, 20 percent of the children who were in foster care will become instantly homeless. And there's a less than a 3 percent chance for children who have aged out of foster care to earn a college degree at any point in their life.San Diego nonprofit Just in Time for Foster Youth (JIT) is doing its part to prevent young people here from becoming a statistic. "When you turn 18 a lot of times the foster parents say here is a few dollars and you're on your own, there's no one to help you out," said Ivan Chavez, who was in the foster system from age 7 to 17.Growing up, he didn't have many positive role models. "For me, I never went to high school, and I barely went to middle school."But his journey brought him to JIT, where he now works as a full-time employee. JIT's My First Home (MFH) program helps former foster youth furnish and move into their new living space, creating a foundation for stable housing.Once every month, youth participants involved in the program have the chance to shop at the MFH Distribution Center, providing participants housing essentials for free, such as furniture, electronics, linens, and appliances. "They come in through the front door they're like you have all this stuff, and it's for me? They feel special, you know?" said Chavez.Chavez went from once living on the streets to now pursuing a master's degree. "If I saw my 15-year-old self, I would say everything is going to be ok. You're going to grow up, and you're going to do good and hopefully change people's lives," said Chavez. The distribution center relies on community donations, and they currently need more couches, dining room tables, and dressers. You can learn more about helping the nonprofit on the Just in Time for Foster Youth website. 1914

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This Saturday's inauguration of a new president in Mexico was the topic of a forum Thursday at the University of San Diego. Experts and policy makers from both sides of the border shared their thoughts on what the new presidency will mean to the future of the relationship between the United States and Mexico."So much of what happens in Mexico doesn't stay in Mexico and so much of what happens in the United States happens along the U.S-Mexico border," said USD Professor David Shirk, who helped organize Thursday's forum.Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador will become the first person to lead Mexico from the political left in several decades after a landslide victory in July elections. He ran on a platform of populist reforms."He's traditionally been a strong supporter of the rights of migrants and respecting their human rights and caring for them," said Tony Wayne, who served as U.S. Ambassador to Mexico from 2011-2015 and attended Thursday's event. He's currently a Public Policy Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Institute."They're going to have to try to pick things up as quickly as they can. Nobody wants a repeat of the kind of incident that you had a few days ago at the border," Wayne said, referring to the clashes between Central American migrants and Border Patrol agents near the San Ysidro border crossing Sunday.Wayne and Shirk share some optimism that Mexico's new administration will be able to find common ground with President Trump, despite their differences on policy. Wayne points out that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will be traveling to Mexico the day after Lopez Obrador's inauguration. Shirk says the two presidents have already formed a bond based on similar styles. "As much bluster as we hear from the Trump administration, there's actually quite a bit of cooperation going on with Mexico." 1848

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Ocean Beach Pier reopened Friday morning after unusually strong storms wreaked havoc on the landmark in January, according to the city. The pier's opening comes just in time for the typically busy Memorial Day Weekend. The pier was closed to the public in January after strong storms caused damage to more than 2,200 feet of guard rail, electric, water and sewer lines. RELATED: Gawkers flocked to Ocean Beach to see damage to the pier from high surfRenovations began in January and was completed on time and under budget, costing the city 9,000, 1,000 less than initially estimated. The Ocean Beach pier is the second longest on the West Coast at 1,970 feet. It’s also the longest concrete pier in the world. Opening in 1966, the pier welcomes more than 500,000 people every year. 820
