At the end of summer, Christina Curfman would typically be rushing to prepare her second-grade classroom. However, it's different this year.“I started a garden,” said Curfman. “I’ve never planted vegetables my entire life, but my mom always had a garden, and I love it.” Her newfound happiness is coming with just as much heartbreak. “I submitted my retirement papers,” said the teacher of 28 years. It was a tough decision, but with COVID-19 threatening the in-person relationships she loved so much while teaching, she was forced to reconsider going back to school. “I had a student ask me, ‘Is this coronavirus going to kill us all?’ and I was like, ‘Oh my goodness. I’m not doing this anymore.’” Curfman knew her body couldn’t take the risk. “I have an autoimmune disorder. It’s similar to Rheumatoid Arthritis, so I have trouble walking," she explained. "The medications that I take kind of lowers your immune system, too.” On top of that, a few years ago, she spent weeks in the hospital for a blood clot in her lung. “I was saying goodbye to friends and family. It looked pretty dire, it looked like I wasn’t going to make it, and I wasn’t willing to test that again,” recalled Curfman. 1207

AURORA, Colo. — An Aurora police officer has been suspended for one week following a well-publicized incident in which the white officer pulled a gun on an Indian American doctor who was trying to park at a refugee center the doctor operates. The Sentinel reports that Officer Justin Henderson with the Aurora Police Department was suspended for 40 hours without pay and ordered to attend de-escalation training for his March 1 confrontation with Dr. P.J. Parmar.Parmar, who is Indian American, says he's disappointed with the punishment and that he believes his race affected how Henderson treated him.His attorney has said he plans to file a federal lawsuit against the city.In a June interview, Parmar told Scripps station KMGH in Denver that he wants to see reforms made in the Aurora Police Department. He said on March 1 that he was moving Boy Scout gear from the Mango House — a shared space for refugees and asylees — to another property, when he noticed a police car parked in his ground-level garage, partially blocking the exit. Pamar said he honked his car.Pamar then claims the officer jumped out of the vehicle, swore at him and pulled out a gun as he ran toward the car.Pamar then started recording the interaction on his phone. It shows Pamar asking Henderson to leave his property."No, I'm going to figure out whose property this is first," Henderson said.At one point, Parmar said Henderson pointed a gun at his face."The gun pointed at me — it was scary, but it's not what hurt the most," Parmar said in June. "What hurt the most was him questioning whether or not I owned that property."Parmar said what happened to him speaks to generations of trauma that people of color have faced in the U.S.See KMGH's report on the incident from June below. Attorneys for former FBI Director James Comey and the US House of Representatives fought in court Friday afternoon over whether Comey must testify to Congress in a private hearing next week. While Comey technically seeks to pause or kill the subpoena, he is using the case to air his accusation that members of the Republican-led House and Senate selectively leak details for their own benefit when they call witnesses to testify in private.Attorneys for the House called Comey's request "so extraordinary and frivolous that, as far as undersigned counsel is aware, no district court in the history of the Republic has ever granted such a request."Judge Trevor McFadden said at the hearing that he hoped to rule Monday morning after meeting again with both legal teams. The meat of Friday's dispute was how each side characterizes Comey's congressional subpoena. Comey's team says Congress is in violation of its own rules by not conducting its fact-finding hearing in public. The hearing won't require that level of secrecy because no sensitive law enforcement information is expected to be discussed, Comey's team said. The House general counsel countered that because Comey's testimony would be a deposition with staff, a public session isn't required.McFadden asked whether Comey could release a transcript of his testimony to get the full picture before the public. But Comey's lawyers said that would take too much time, allowing leaks of the information before Comey could release his full testimony. When McFadden asked Comey's attorney whether he agreed with the House that a judge has never limited Congress in this way before, the lawyer David Kelley responded, "Here's your opportunity, Judge."Comey has said he would like to testify publicly about the separate investigations into Hillary Clinton's email practices and Russian interference in the 2016 election -- in front of live TV cameras as he has done before."The broader purpose of these tweets and leaks appears to be to mislead the public and to undermine public confidence in the FBI and the DOJ during a time when President Trump and members of his administration and campaign team are reported to be under investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller and other law enforcement authorities," Comey wrote in his complaint. He says he is a "victim" of Congress' "unauthorized and abusive tactics."Comey did not attend Friday's hearing in person. He has asked the judge to issue an emergency order to pause the congressional proceedings and to quash the subpoena. In theory, Comey could lose his court challenge and still win what he's seeking, if he manages to convince the judge to pause his subpoena until the House flips to Democratic control at year's end.The case initially was set to be heard by Judge Timothy Kelly, a Trump appointee, then was reassigned randomly to McFadden, also a Trump appointee, after Kelly likely recused from the case. 2941

Attorneys for Noor Salman are calling for a dismissal of charges or a mistrial after they say new details from prosecutors reveal that Pulse gunman Omar Mateen's father was an FBI informant who is currently under a criminal investigation.According to a motion filed by the defense, Assistant US Attorney Sara Sweeney sent an email on Saturday to the defense -- in the middle of Salman's trial -- that stated Seddique Mateen was a confidential FBI source from 2005 through June 2016.The email also stated that Seddique Mateen is being investigated for money transfers to Turkey and Pakistan after documents were found in his home on the day of the Pulse attack. 668

As the NBA plans to resume action at the end of the month, the bubble the league has implemented in Orlando, Florida, appears to be working. On Monday, the league said that its latest round of tests netted no new confirmed coronavirus cases. The league has implemented a “bubble” for its players, meaning players are being confined to a hotel complex as Florida is grappling with a spike in recent weeks of COVID-19 cases. The complex also contains practice gyms for the players to workout. At the end of June, before players entered the “bubble,” the league found 16 coronavirus cases out of over 300 tested. The NBA is moving forward with a planned relaunch on July 30, with 22 teams of the league’s 30 teams participating in the conclusion of the season and subsequent postseason based at Orlando’s Wide World of Sports. Fans will not be allowed to watch in person. The league suspended play on March 11 when Utah Jazz star Rudy Gobert tested positive for COVID-19 moments before tipoff in a game against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Several games were allowed to conclude that evening, but the NBA has not held a game since. 1129
