NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Residents are fleeing coastal areas in Louisiana as the state braces for a possible hit from consecutive hurricanes. Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards says the fear is the state could see a heavy storm surge from Hurricane Marco, now in the Gulf of Mexico, and a second strike from Tropical Storm Laura before water from the first storm recedes. Laura is now lashing islands in the Caribbean and could grow into a powerful hurricane. The governor says "we've not seen this before." As the storms approached, homeowners and tourists were leaving the barrier island of Grand Isle, south of New Orleans. 625

NEW YORK (AP) — A 75-foot Norway spruce has arrived at New York City’s Rockefeller Center to serve as one of the world’s most famous Christmas trees. The tree was trucked in Saturday morning and lifted into place by a crane. The tree will be decorated over the coming weeks. It was donated by Al Dick of Daddy Al’s General Store in Oneonta in central New York. NBC says it's broadcasting the tree-lighting at 7 p.m. Dec. 2. No in-person spectators will be allowed this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. NEW YORK — An Army veteran who just celebrated his 100th birthday won a fight to stay in his Brooklyn home on Tuesday.James Been served in World War II as a radio operator and celebrated his milestone birthday on June 19.Been has lived in a brownstone on Halsey Street in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood since 1927, and he says the house has been in his family for generations.Been has lived an extraordinary life. During the war, he served in an all-Black regiment known as the Harlem Hell Fighters."I served in the 93rd Division in the South Pacific against the Japanese from 1942 to 1946. Instead of buses, there were buggies going downtown here. It's a wonderful feeling to remember those historic events," Been said.Last year, Been was shocked to find out there was a foreclosure case filed against him.He said he couldn't repay a 0,000 home equity loan he secured in 2006 when he was 84.Belinda Luu, Been's lawyer, works with an organization called Mobilization for Justice. She said it was "wrong" that Been was being forced out of his home."There are so many mostly Black homeowners who have built these communities, like Bed-Stuy, and they are being pushed out," she said.Thankfully for Been, the case against him won't continue. A JPMorgan Chase spokesperson delivered the good news to him on Tuesday."Mr. Been will not be evicted from his home. We are committed to honoring those who have served," the company said.But Councilmember Robert Cornegy of Brooklyn said Been's story represents a much bigger problem for vulnerable seniors."There are hundreds — probably thousands — of people like Been, but they don't want to come forward. NEW YORK (AP) — A popular online spoof of the children's favorite "Goodnight Moon," reworked for the coronavirus, will be published by Penguin Random House this fall. The Penguin imprint Philomel Books announced Monday that "Good Morning Zoom" is scheduled for Oct. 6. It's written by Lindsay Rechler and illustrated by June Park. Currently self-published, "Good Morning Zoom" takes Margaret Wise Brown's beloved bedtime story and turns it into a narrative about Zoom, bread baking, homeschooling, and other familiar parts of life during the pandemic. 559

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The oldest known U.S. veteran of World War II celebrated his 111th birthday over the weekend and he did it in style.Like it has for the past five years, The National WWII Museum hosted a birthday celebration for Lawrence Brooks on Saturday. This year though, they followed social distancing guidelines and the centenarian enjoyed the festivities from his home in New Orleans.From his porch, Brooks watched as military planes from the Aeroshell Aerobatic Team and The Big Easy Wing flew over just for him.The museum also had its vocal trio, The Victory Belles, perform a series of numbers for Brooks, including “Happy Birthday.”Lastly, Brooks was presented with a cake, a recorded message from the museum’s CEO, and nearly 10,000 birthday cards collected as a result of a national card drive.“It is such an honor to have the oldest living U.S. veteran of World War II living so close to our institution, and it was meaningful for us to continue to celebrate Lawrence Brooks and his incredible life in a safe manner this year,” said the museum’s assistant director of public engagement, Amber Mitchell, in a press release. “As we continue to lose members of The Greatest Generation, it is so important that we honor these men and women for their bravery and sacrifice while they are with us.”Brooks served in the predominantly African American 91st Engineer Battalion, which was stationed in New Guinea and then the Philippines during WWII, according to the museum.
