SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Southern California's theme parks are gearing up for holiday fun starting this month.Disneyland, California Adventure, Legoland, and more welcome in the holidays this month with several special events, parades, activities, and treats for guests to enjoy.Here's a look at what parks are planning this holiday season for guests and when the fun begins:Disneyland: The holidays return to Disneyland Park from Nov. 8 through Jan. 6, 2020, bringing fireworks, parades, and delicious treats to Anaheim. Disney characters create a magical winter wonderland during the "Believe ... in Holiday Magic" fireworks show and "A Christmas Fantasy" parade with Elsa, Mickey, Santa, and others. Guests can check out the park's 60-foot Christmas tree on Main Street, and Sleeping Beauty's Castle dressed for the holidays every day. Guests will also find holiday treats throughout the park this season.California Adventure Park: Disney's Festival of Holidays runs Nov. 8 through Jan. 6, 2020, at California Adventure Park, bringing sunset concerts, festive foods, and craft stations to the park. Street Party" ushers in the season with folklórico and samba dancers, and Cars Land zooms into the holidays with special decorations and Luigi's Joy to the Whirl and Mater's Jingle Jamboree attractions. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Sophie Felix may be petite, but there is nothing small about the way she approaches living and giving -- and it all started with her grandparents."Growing up, my Grandmother and my Grandpa Augie used to be foster parents so from a very young age I understood it's very important to give back to children in need," says Felix.Nine years ago, Sophie says she felt compelled to reach out to the Encinitas-based group, Passion 4 K.I.D.S. which stands for Kids In Desperate Situations. The group helps improve the lives of handicapped, neglected and underprivileged children.Through founders Linda and Charles Van Kessler, Sophie met Izaiah Wallis and his family. Izaiah has been unable to walk or talk since he was hit by a drunk driver at age one, 10 years ago.Sophie started out by planning special experiences for the family including securing sponsorships for trips to Disneyland and Seaworld as well as handicapped accessible gear such as a van --- and Sophie was just getting started. A mom herself, she became the chapter president of America's Children of Fallen Heroes. Off-roading adventure in a custom jeep is just one part of what the group does. A bigger part is providing the kids with a 10-year mentorship program so they can pursue anything and realize their dreams.Sophie says that is very important to her because she herself is living her American dream. In addition to her charity work, Sophie runs her own business, HBM Talent and Management, and she spreads her passion to every client she signs."That is part of our deal. They have to volunteer for at least 2 charity events per year," she says.Those clients, including former NASCAR driver Felix Giles, are happy to do it. If all that weren't enough, Sophie also makes sure a local brother and sister, whose mother can't afford Christmas presents, get presents every year.Sophie says her work with kids brings her, "indescribable joy, inspiration, happy tears, hope, faith" because she knows this is her purpose.Sophie's charity mentor Linda Van Kessler says Sophie has a heart of gold --- a heart that just gets bigger and bigger because of what she feels every time she helps a child. 2193

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego-based Helix has new FDA Emergency approval for its COVID-19 test that will make getting a test easier.The test is now approved for self-administration and for asymptomatic people to take.That means testing sites can give more tests without having to increase their staffing levels."It simplifies the collection," says Dr. James Lu, the President of Helix. "You can do it without having to have another person watching you."The test is also much simpler than the traditional upper nasal swab, as it only requires the lower area of the nostril to be swabbed."It actually just goes into the anterior narrows of the nostril area, and you just rotate it five times in each nostril," says Dr. Lu."It can be totally done by yourself, is completely painless, and it takes less than 30 seconds."RELATED: University City lab switches gears to create COVID-19 testsHowever, unlike home-pregnancy tests or DNA swab kits, Dr. Lu says Helix's COVID test still needs to be done in a clinical setting, so medical professionals can report the results and advise patients after they get results."We still think it's essential to have a physician in the loop, particularly for those cases where you do have positives," says Dr. Lu. "Those patients do need to be reported, and also make sure they have the right guidance in terms of quarantine."The simpler, self-administered swab could also make people more likely to get tested since they don't have to go through the old way of testing, which involved a swab shoved all the way up their nasal cavity.More testing also means more people will know if they're sick even if they don't have symptoms. That will make it easier for businesses and schools to reopen in the future."We believe that accurate and easily available, fast turnaround testing is essential to controlling the disease," says Dr. Lu. "And it's essential for identifying individuals who are sick or potentially spreaders so they can quarantine."Helix plans to make 100,000 of the newly approved tests every day. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University is alerting students who may have been exposed to meningococcal meningitis.The university says they were notified that a current student has a “probable case of meningococcal meningitis.”The university said in a tweet that it is immediately hosting two clinics for those who attended specific events with the student. The events were the Delta Sigma Phi Formal, held Friday, April 12, from 5 to 11 p.m. at the Spark Encore Event Center; and the Delta Sigma Phi Social Event, which was held Saturday, April 13, from 9:30 p.m. to Midnight, at the organization’s chapter facility. Students who attended the events are urged to attend one of the two clinics that are being offered for free at SDSU. The most common symptoms of meningococcal meningitis are fever, headache and a stiff neck, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
