SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego couple is doing all they can to bring joy to hundreds of kids living in orphanages and shelters around the county.And despite the pandemic, they have donated thousands of stuffed animals to little ones in need.Charles and Linda van Kessler, with Passion 4 Kids, have donated 5,000 stuffed animals this year to kids in orphanages and shelters around the county."They need so much more and deserve so much better," Linda van Kessler said. "For these kids, it means a lot. It's something that's theirs. Something that gives them unconditional love."More than half of Passion 4 Kids' donations have been delivered in the past month. The couple says the kids cling to their new toys like a security blanket, of sorts."They are just so craving for love and someone to care about them and play with them. Most of the time we end up in tears because it's just so heartbreaking," Linda said.Charles says he knows the power of giving comfort first hand. He spent nearly 10 years in an orphanage in Amsterdam during World War II."I saw my family snatched away for the nazis. So I ended up in a state orphanage for 8 years, of abuse. I ran away and when I came to America I immediately decided to create a charity," Charles van Kessler said.And the pandemic has taken a toll on children. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Marine was killed in a hit-and-run accident in the Midway District just after 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night, according to San Diego Police.The victim, who was in his early 20's, was visiting an establishment with his friends earlier that night.At some point, his friends could not find him. Police said he walked or fell into the street in the 2700 block of Midway Drive.Police said a car hit him and took off toward Rosecrans Street. There was no description of the driver or vehicle available. Police were checking surveillance video and his phone to find out more information. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A human smuggler reportedly used two children as decoys by dropping them over the border into concertina wire, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. CBP reports that two Salvadoran girls, ages six and nine, were dropped roughly eight feet from the San Diego border behind concertina wire late Monday night. “Agents responded and moments later, a group of 10 individuals crossed the border in the area agents vacated,” said Rodney Scott, Chief Patrol Agent for the U.S. Border Patrol. Scott said on social media that the group eluded capture. The two young girls were given medical attention for what CBP called minor injuries. The agency is working with the consulate in El Salvador to locate the girls’ parents, the agency said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new report shows where San Diego ranks among best and worst cities in California to retire. According to WalletHub, San Diego takes the 47th spot on the list among 257 other cities throughout California. America’s Finest City ranked 51st for quality of life, 139th for health care and 4th in the activities ranking. San Diego did take the top spot in California in several categories. According to WalletHub, San Diego has the most museums and fishing facilities per capita when compared with other California cities. San Diego did, however, rank quite a bit lower when it comes to adjusted cost of living and percentage of population aged 65 and older, placing 149th and 145th respectively. According to the WalletHub ranking, the best cities in California for retirement are Los Gatos, Los Altos and Walnut Creek. The lowest-ranking cities are Modesto, San Bernardino and Stockton. To compile the list WalletHub compared more than 250 cities across 28 key metrics. 997

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was stabbed to death in a Pacific Beach bathroom Sunday, and a man possibly linked to the incident was arrested, according to San Diego Police.SDPD officials said the stabbing was reported just after 7:30 p.m. in the 700 block of Grand Avenue as an assault with a deadly weapon with an injured man.Firefighters and lifeguards were the first arrive, and they found a 39-year-old white male bleeding from the upper torso in a men's bathroom, according to police. First aid was given within minutes and the man was taken to a hospital, but he died from his injuries.Police said witnesses reported seeing a man riding away from the scene on a bicycle immediately following the incident. A man matching witness descriptions was detained about a quarter-mile away from the scene and was questioned, according to SDPD officials.On Monday, officials announced 33-year-old Martin Alvarez was arrested and booked into County Jail on suspicion of murder.Police are not aware of any relationship between the victim and the suspect.Police are looking into whether cameras at nearby businesses have any video of the events surrounding the stabbing. Witnesses were also being interviewed. 1207
