BEIJING, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao paid visits to the Beijing Military Area Command and a local communication station of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) on Wednesday, just days ahead of the traditional Lunar New Year. BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official called on the country's lawyers to serve their clients wholeheartedly and be a guard for the legal rights and interests of their clients, at Saturday's opening of the Seventh National Lawyers Congress.     The congress will last through October 27.     He urged Chinese lawyers to strictly abide by the principle of "making facts as the base and law as the yardstick" and follow their code of conduct and disciplines.     Lawyers "should take the safeguarding of social fairness and justice as the fundamental pursuit of value in their practice," said Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau and the secretary of the CPC Central Political and Legislative Affairs Committee (CPLAC).     Under the leadership of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, China's lawyer system has been gradually improving, while the lawyers' number has kept on increasing and their role has become increasingly clear, according to the senior official.     Zhou urged Chinese lawyers to give top priority to the cause of the Party, the interests of the people, and the Constitution and law, and be an adamantine constructor and guard for socialism with China's own characteristics.     Chinese lawyers should become a promoter for social harmony, he said, noting that the All-China Lawyers Association (ACLA) should bring into full play of its role as a bridge and ligament between Chinese lawyers and the Party and the government.     Present at the opening session were Meng Jianzhu, minister of public security, state councilor and deputy secretary of the CPLAC, Wang Shengjun, president of the Supreme People's Court, and Cao Jianming, procurator-general of the Supreme People's Procuratorate.     According to official website of the ACLA, the congress is its highest governing body. BOSE, Guangxi, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's top lawmaker urged the southwest Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to build more transportation infrastructure and accept more industries from developed areas.     Guangxi should try to find a road for development compatible to its own realities, said Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), during his tour of the region which wraps up Wednesday.     Wu said the region should use the advantages it has such as low labor costs and natural resources to develop rural areas.     Wu, who is also member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, visited local villages, factories and schools to talk about rural reforms made at the recent Third Plenary Session of the Seventeenth CPC Central Committee.     He said the region should use its advantage of having a lengthy coastline and many sea ports, to make the Beibu Gulf Economic Zone the top recipient of development.     During his tour, Wu paid a visit to the Bose Memorial Hall, in Bose City. It was built to commemorate a 1929 uprising led by revolutionaries including Deng Xiaoping.     He laid a floral basket in front of the statues of Deng and his comrades. Deng is known as the Chief Architect of China's 30 year-old Reform and Opening-up drive.

CHENGDU, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao extended Lunar New Year greetings on behalf of the government and joined holiday festivities in quake-hit Sichuan Province in southwest China over the weekend.     Wen visited villagers, students, medical workers and police in Beichuan, Deyang and Wenchuan, which were among the worst-hit areas in the 8.0-magnitude quake that struck on May 12.     It was Wen's seventh visit to the province since the quake, which was centered in Wenchuan County. The earthquake left more than 69,000 people dead, 374,000 injured, 18,000 missing and millions homeless.     Wen started with a visit to Wang Chengyi's home on Saturday afternoon. Wang, a middle-aged villager of Qiang nationality, lives in a newly-built Qiang village in Beichuan County. In a community of makeshift houses, Wen went into a kitchen shared by the Wu's and two other families and joined them in preparing dinner for the Spring Festival's Eve. DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday stressed confidence, cooperation and responsibility as key to overcoming the current global financial crisis.     The global financial crisis is a challenge for the whole world, and the pressing task for the international community is "to take further measures to restore market confidence as soon as possible," Wen told participants attending the World Economic Forum annual meeting in the Swiss skiing resort of Davos.     In tackling the crisis, confidence is the source of strength, practical cooperation the effective way and accepting responsibilities the prerequisite, he said in his special message at the forum.     "We should not only take more forceful and effective steps to tide over the current difficulties, but also push for the establishment of a new world economic order that is just, equitable, sound and stable," Wen said.     To this end, international economic cooperation and a sound multilateral trading regime should be promoted, and the reform of the international financial system should be advanced, he said.
