A woman in Maricopa, Arizona, has been arrested, accused of physical abuse against her seven adoptive children. Maricopa police say that on March 13, an adult woman came to their department and said her mother, 48-year-old Machelle Hackney, had been abusing her siblings.According to a police report, she said the siblings were left in locked closets for days at a time, pepper sprayed and left with no food or water for days on end by their adoptive mother.Police went to the home and allegedly found a child in a closet wearing a pull-up diaper and no other clothing. The closet had a lock on it, but it was not locked at the time. Police say they children appeared pale, underweight and had bags under their eyes. One of the children told police they were pepper sprayed numerous times as punishment by his mother, among other physical abuse. "I either get beat with a hanger or belt, or a brush, or get pepper sprayed from head to toe.” The others described similar abuse, including abuse to their private parts and being forced to take ice baths. Police also say the children were also forced to participate and “act” in a popular YouTube series that Hackney filmed in their home. Several of the children said if they forgot lines, or tried not to participate, they would be physically abused as punishment. Police interviewed one of Hackney’s adult sons. Logan Hackney said he and his brother Ryan discussed reporting the abuse, but never did. Logan allegedly admitted to knowing about the physical abuse, and said they would sneak the children food when possible. When questioned, Machelle Hackney "denied the pepper spray, denied the ice baths and stated the only forms of punishment she uses is having to stand in the corner, getting spankings and being grounded,” according to police paperwork. Logan Hackney and Ryan Hackney were booked into Pinal County Jail for seven counts each of failing to report abuse of a minor. Machelle was booked into Pinal County Jail for two counts of molestation of a child, seven counts of child abuse, five counts of unlawful imprisonment and five counts of child neglect. 2131

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt announced at a news conference on Wednesday that he has tested positive for COVID-19. Stitt said the illnesses started as feeling achy, but reported no other symptoms. He is working from home and will remain in quarantine until Interim Commissioner of Health Lance Frye says it is okay to return.Stitt and Frye also gave an update on COVID-19 in Oklahoma. They said data showed that Oklahoma's positive rate is less than the national average for positive cases.Data also showed that hospitals have supplies stockpiled and the hospitalization rate in the state is going down. Oklahoma coronavirus cases are rising. The highest single-day total was reported on July 15 with 1,075 cases. As of July 14, a total of 432 Oklahomans have passed from the virus. A South Florida mother is hoping a social media blitz will help President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris see her daughter's letter to them.Sydney Carlo, who lives in Cooper City, wrote the letter Saturday after learning that Biden and Harris were the projected winners of the election. "Sydney has been following the election, so every morning since Tuesday, Nov. 3, the first thing she's done is walk into my room and say, 'Do we know who won yet?'" Communities across the country are trying to find the answer to the opioid crisis.Illinois is testing out a program that lets doctors give patients access to medical marijuana instead of an opioid prescription in an effort to combat opioid addiction. For Philadelphia radio host Britt Carpenter, marijuana helped him get clean. Now, he uses his experience as a chance to pay it forward by using his voice to speak with those dealing with issues like addiction. "I was addicted to opioids for many years,” Carpenter admits. “I started back in the early 2000s after a car accident." To treat his injury, doctors gave him pain killers. Similar to many others, what was supposed to help him, nearly destroyed him. The pain pills led to a heroin addiction. "I fell into a bad situation again,” he recalls. “Met the wrong person and went down the pathway of hell for a few years after that." Now, Carpenter is four years sober. However, rehab was not his savior. "I looked at different ways I could help myself go clean off the opioids, and one of them I did extensive research on: utilizing cannabis," Carpenter says. The radio personality kicked narcotics with cannabis. For years, Carpenter had used marijuana recreationally, but this time, pot helped him detox. "I wasn't feeling as shaky as most people, or as I had done before when I tried to go clean, I wasn't sweating as much,” he says. “I was able to have an appetite. I was able to gain almost 40 pounds." However, as helpful as cannabis was for him, it’s illegal in his home state of Pennsylvania. But now, some states that have not legalized marijuana are realizing cannabis can be an answer to the opioid crisis. In Illinois, around 1,500 patients have taken part in the state’s pilot program where doctors can give patients access to medical marijuana as an alternative to opioids. While Carpenter will say marijuana was the answer for him, he says it may not for be for everyone. "I don't encourage them to just go buy the cannabis and say, ‘OK, this is what I'm going to do,’” he says. “I had to sit down; I had a really come up with a plan." To those who don't believe in the power of this plant, Carpenter recommends they give it a chance and to give others a chance in the fight against addiction. "If you don't feel it's the right thing for somebody that is going into recovery or trying to go clean off of opioids, don't balk at it. Do research and figure out what's there,” he says. “Find out how positive the results can be, because I believe I’m living proof of that." 2555
