LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rafer Johnson, who won the decathlon at the 1960 Rome Olympics and helped subdue Robert F. Kennedy's assassin in 1968, has died. He was 86. Family friend Michael Roth says Johnson died Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles. No cause was announced. Johnson was among the world's greatest athletes from 1955 through his Olympic triumph in 1960. The Associated Press reported Johnson won a national decathlon championship in 1956 and a silver medal at the Melbourne Olympics that same year.He lit the torch at the 1984 Los Angeles Games. In June 1968, Johnson was with Kennedy at a hotel in Los Angeles when the senator was shot by Sirhan Sirhan. Johnson, along with former NFL star Rosey Grier and journalist George Plimpton, helped in subduing the shooter. Kennedy died the next day.According to the Associated Press, Johnson called the assassination “one of the most devastating moments in my life.” 925

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A fiery crash involving a big rig has injured three people, two critically, and backed up traffic on a Southern California freeway for miles.Authorities say a truck loaded with concrete and gravel hit a car shortly before 3 p.m. Monday on northbound Interstate 405 in the busy Sepulveda Pass area of Los Angeles. The trailer overturned on top of the car, pinning someone underneath and both vehicles burst into flames.Bystanders stopped and managed to pull the trapped person and two others to safety.However, the three reportedly suffered burns, including the truck driver. Two people were hospitalized in critical condition and the third was in fair condition.Lanes on both sides of the freeway were closed, backing up both northbound and southbound traffic. 787

Lorenzo Liberti is a teenage flag maker."The day that I stop working is a day that a hero could be forgotten," says the 15-year-old from Lakewood Ranch.Using pinewood and prodigious talent, Lorenzo works day and night in his garage hand-carving Heroic Flags, gorgeous, time-consuming tributes to American heroes he sells and donates to help people in need."As long as you're living, you're here for a purpose," he says.Lorenzo has only been creating the flags for the past eight months or so. He's made about 50 so far and raised thousands of dollars for children with special needs, homeless veterans, and Bradenton's Turning Points nonprofit."This is bigger than me," he says.The pandemic has inspired Lorenzo's newest mission: honoring medical workers across the country.He's raising money to try and get one of his flags in a hospital in every state: 50 flags, all across America. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles County prosecutors are joining other district attorneys to use technology to wipe out 66,000 old marijuana convictions years after California voters broadly legalized the drug. The county is working with the nonprofit Code for America, which uses computer algorithms to find eligible cases that are otherwise hard to identify in old court documents. The group has offered its technology free to all of the state's 58 district attorneys. The program identifies eligible cases and automatically fills out forms to file with the courts. Prosecutors this week asked an Los Angeles judge to dismiss convictions for cases that date back to 1961. 679
