SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The community of Barrio Logan welcomed residents to shop in the streets after months of coronavirus’ impact. Saturday, Aug. 4, the “Walk the Block” event debuted. Local businesses got permits to move service outdoors to the sidewalk, and the event celebrated the community’s resurgence of business with food, specialty items and music.Business owners like Stephanie, who runs Dreamers and Hustlers Company, a clothing shop with items branded toward the namesake, said the past few months have been hard, but she’s confident Barrio Logan shops will bounce back.“Even during these times we figure out ways we can pick ourselves up and get going again,” she said.Edgar Flores said his shop, Maxa Market, sells products made by local small businesses and entrepreneurs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego Public Utilities department has spend almost 8 million since 2013 to repair and replace 116 miles of water transmission and distribution pipes as part of a program to upgrade it's aging water system, according to documents given to 10News.Most of those repairs (72 miles) were on cast iron pipes, the oldest ones in the system."We have more than 3,000 miles of pipeline," said department spokesperson Brent Eidson, "To do it properly, we're probably always going to be replacing pipes."The project began in 2007 with a rate increase to pay for the work. As older pipes have been replaced, city officials say the number of water main breaks has decreased.The Public Utilities Department gave 10News the following numbers about the amount of breaks over the past 6 years:2012: 1022013: 952014: 742015: 632016: 852017: 66 (as of October 20)"We know we're not going to stop every break," said Eidson. "But if you look at our track record and our pace of replacement, we've seen a significant decline in the number of breaks that we've had."The project replaces aging pipes made out of cast iron or concrete with new PVC pipes. Eidson said that's the industry standard and they have a life expectancy of 50-75 years. He says economics and budgeting led to delays in the older pipes not being replaced sooner.That changed when the rate increase was approved. Now the goal is to replace 30 miles per year.The city says its water system extends over 400 square miles and moves approximately 172 million gallons per day. It includes 49 water pump stations, 29 treated water storage facilities, three water treatment plants and more than 3,300 miles of pipelines.Through the replacement project, the department hopes to have all of the cast iron distribution lines (6-12 inches) replaced by 2018-19. Their goal for the larger cast iron transmission mains (16 inches or bigger) should be finished by 2023.Right now, they say there are still about 46 miles of cast iron pipes in the system, some of them almost 100 years old.Once the cast iron lines are replaced, they'll shift the focus to the older concrete lines."I look at it like painting the Golden Gate Bridge," said Eidson. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The 10-day Sturgis motorcycle rally held in August led to more than 266,000 new coronavirus cases, according to a new study from San Diego State University.The study, released this week, says upwards of 460,000 people converged on Sturgis, a South Dakota city of 7,000, causing a bump in Coronavirus infections across the US. "Large crowds, coupled with minimal mask-wearing and social distancing by attendees, raised concerns that this event could serve as a COVID-19 'super spreader,'" said the study, which did conclude that the rally was a super spreader event.Researchers from San Diego State's Center for Health Economics and Policy Study used anonymized cell phone data to track where attendees came from, then traced it back to their counties. They found that the counties that had the highest numbers of Sturgis attendees saw a 7% to 12% increase in coronavirus cases. The study also said that CDC data shows that cases in Meade County, South Dakota, where the rally is held, increased 6 to 7 cases per 1,000 population a month after the event started. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Marine Corps reported an E.coli outbreak Tuesday among more than 300 troops at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego.The diarrheal illness has affected 302 of approximately 5,500 recruits at the base. The cases had tapered off in the past week but a spike was reported Monday.Ten recruits were admitted to an off-base medical facility while the remainder are being cared for at MCRD. The source of the outbreak is under investigation, according to the Marine Corps."Our immediate focus is identifying, isolating and treating recruits who present symptoms," said Brig. Gen.
