A United States Postal Service spokesperson said on Wednesday that there has been some misinformation on the status of mail going from the United States and China. A USPS spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday that mail addressed to China, Hong Kong and Macao will continue to be accepted by the USPS. The World Health Organization also noted that the coronavirus does not survive for long on objects, which means it is safe to accept packages given the transit time between China and the United States, which can often take weeks. USPS said it has implemented measures to ensure the safety of mail processing and postal staff, including disinfection of postal offices, processing centers and transportation vehicles, and monitoring of postal staff’s physical health.While USPS continues to accept mail destined to areas affected by the coronavirus, the coronavirus has caused some significant disruption of service between the two nations.“Due to widespread airline cancellations, capacity constraints and restrictions into this area, the U.S. Postal Service has temporarily suspended the guarantee on Priority Mail Express International destined for China and Hong Kong, effective Monday, Feb. 10, 2020,” a USPS spokesperson said. “Additionally, we are not accepting transit mail from other countries sending their mail through U.S. Postal Service offices of exchange (International Service Centers) destined to China, Hong Kong and Macao.”For all mail coming into China, the China Post will contact the recipient via telephone and arrange for a non-face-to-face delivery method, which includes temporary storage at the postal outlet, availability for collection from the outlet, or delivery to a smart parcel locker. Now, filing taxes this year is causing some confusion. “Normally, busy season is a challenge in and of itself, but this has added many more layers,” said Elieen Sherr, with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.Sherr has had an increase number of people confused on whether they are supposed to file their income taxes now, or if the federal income tax deadline extension applies to them.“This all happened in the last few weeks, and the states, they were waiting for the IRS to come out with their guidance,” said Sherr. “At first, it was just payment relief. Then, it was filing and payment relief, so that was confusing.”Sherr explained, just shy of the normal tax deadline, there is now some clearer guidance.The federal government has extended it deadline for federal tax filing and payments to July 15, 2020. Many states have now moved their filing deadlines to match.However, in a few states like Mississippi, Virginia, and Idaho, you have to file earlier. The deadline is May 15 in Mississippi, June 1 for Virginia, and June 15 in Idaho.Differing state and federal deadlines have some wondering if you file your state return early can you file your federal at the later deadline?“Generally, you have to start with the federal, so you will have to start with the federal to get to a state return,” said Sherr.Some good news in that instance: if you owe money on your federal return, you won’t have to pay that until July 15. If you are someone who is getting money back, even better news, returns are being processed right now, without delays.“They want to get the money out to everybody, especially the refund,” Sherr explained. “They want to get it into the economy so they are doing the best they can.” 1862

A mother of two is turning Goodwill into glamour. Jenny Carlson says she was tired of spending hundreds of dollars on her kids’ clothes.“Kids clothing is so expensive,” said Carlson. “They grow out of it so quickly or they stain it in a second, and you’ve spent on a shirt, and now it’s ruined.”Carlson decided to take matters into her own hands. Now, she’s not only saving money, but earning it too. “I sell handmade or repurposed or vintage children’s clothing and accessories,” Carlson said. Carlson makes shopping trips to Goodwill, looking for donated items to reuse as fabric. "There's so much clothing that gets put into the landfill each year," said Carlson. Those unique patterns and colors will get turned into new and unique children's outfits. “I’ve been sewing since I was 8 years old,” said Carlson. “My grandmother sewed, and my mother sewed.”Carlson mix matches fabrics to make items like dresses, vests, bows and bonnets. At first, Carlson made clothes for her children to save money, but over time, her hobby morphed into a real business called Sweet Basil Avenue. She sells on Etsy to customers all over the world. “It's made from used or vintage clothing," said Carlson. “They range from to .” It’s all depending on size and how much fabric she used.Not all of us are crafty like Carlson, but she says it's not about sewing or making money. It's about doing something that makes you happy. “Everybody needs a hobby of some kind that brings them joy,” said Carlson. 1507

A migrant shelter in Tornillo, Texas that's housed thousands of children may close next month.A tent-like facility in Texas that houses unaccompanied migrant children may close next month after they are all released to parents or sponsors in the US. That's according to an official who spoke with several news outlets, including CNN and CBS News.The migrant shelter is located near the Tornillo-Guadalupe Port of Entry and operated by BCFS, a nonprofit that operates health and human services programs. The shelter opened this past summer with a capacity of about 300 people. Now, it reportedly houses between 2,400 to 2,800 children. The official told news outlets the facility will no longer accept children and will close after the last child is released to either a sponsor or another facility run by the Office of Refugee Resettlement. The federal government's contract with BCFS will expire on December 31st, and the source says the non-profit does not plan to extend it.An exact closing date for the facility has not yet been announced.
