ASHGABAT, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao's three-nation tour to Central Asia has strategic significance for regional peace and stability, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Friday.     The president has engaged in extensive exchange of views with the leaders of Turkmenistan, South Korea, Tajikistan and Russia on bilateral ties and major international and regional issues of common concern, reaching broad consensus, said Yang, who is accompanying Hu during the tour.     TO DEEPEN COOPERATION, STRENGTHEN TIES     After China's establishment of diplomatic ties with South Korea, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan 16 years ago, its ties with the three countries have enjoyed rapid development, and the fields of bilateral cooperation have witnessed continuous expansion.     During President Hu's visit, China issued a joint communique with South Korea and released joint statements with Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. Over 30 bilateral cooperative documents have been inked between China and the three nations.     In Seoul, Hu said China's ties with South Korea should aim at achieving common development of long term, and the two countries should share development opportunities, face challenges together, deepen comprehensive cooperation and enhance coordination and cooperation in dealing with major international and regional issues. WASHINGTON, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and U.S. President George W. Bush met at the White House on Tuesday, agreeing to push forward with the constructive and cooperative relations between the two countries.     During the meeting, Yang hailed the great development that two countries have achieved in the past seven years in enhancing China-U.S. relations, which he said also contributed to the peace, stability and development of the Asia-Pacific region and the world.     He noted that Chinese President Hu Jintao and President Bush have set the direction for the future development of bilateral relations during their meeting held at the sidelines of the Hokkaido G8 summit in Japan earlier this month.     China is willing to work with the United States to follow the direction and push forward with the constructive and cooperative relations between the two countries, Yang added.     For his part, Bush told the visiting Chinese top diplomat that he is glad to see China-U.S. relations developing on a favorable momentum that the United States is committing to maintaining, and he also appreciates a good working relationship built with Chinese President Hu Jintao.     On the coming Olympic games in Beijing, Yang expressed his welcome to Bush, who is set to attend the opening ceremony, and wished American athletes excellent performance in the competitions.     Bush said, in return, that he looks forward to visiting China to attend the Olympic games' opening ceremony.     On the issues of human rights and religion, Yang told the U.S. president that China would like to continue to exchange its views with the United States on basis of equality, mutual respect and non-interference in each other's domestic affairs, as a way to promote mutual understanding.     He also noted at the meeting that the WTO's Doha Round trade negotiations are at a critical moment, and its success would help promote world economy growth, which is in the common interest of China, the United States and the international community.     China hopes that all sides can work together to push forward with the negotiations and achieve a comprehensive and balanced result, he added.     Yang also met with Stephen Hadley, assistant to the president for national security affairs.

BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee recently held a forum to solicit opinions and suggestions from non-Communist personages on the documents of its latest plenary session held late last week.     CPC Central Committee General Secretary Hu Jintao briefed the leaders of the non-Communist parties, leaders of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, and persons without party affiliation on what was considered when forming the document. He asked them to raise suggestions on its revision.     Some delegates made remarks, approving the summary made by the CPC Central Committee on the experiences of the 30 years of rural reform and development and supporting the guideline thinking, objectives, principles and measures of rural reform and development.     They raised suggestions on the overall plan of urban and rural development, farmland protection, grain security, spread of agricultural technology and rural financial system reform, as well as on deepening cross-Strait agricultural exchanges and cooperation and improving grassroots democracy.     After hearing the opinions, Hu said the suggestions were valuable and reflected the in-depth thinking of the participants. Relevant departments would conscientiously study and adopt them.     He added China was an agricultural country with the majority of its population in rural areas. BEIJING, May 13 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a major earthquake in southwest China's Sichuan Province has climbed to 9,219, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said here Tuesday morning.     The 7.8-magnitude quake has killed 9,219 people in eight affected provinces and municipality of Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi, Yunnan, Shanxi, Guizhou, Hubei and Chongqing, the ministry said in a release issued at 7 a.m.. A major eathquake measuring 7.8 on Richter scale jolted Wenchuan County of Sichuan Province at 2:28 p.m. on Monday.Of the killed, 8,993 were in Sichuan, 132 in Gansu, 85 in Shaanxi, eight in Chongqing and one in Yunnan, the ministry said.     The quake jolted Wenchuan County of Sichuan at 2:28 p.m. Monday, which also leveled some 500,000 rooms in the affected areas.     To cope with the catastrophe, the State Disaster Relief Commission and the Civil Affairs Ministry immediately initiated a "Level II emergency response plan" on Monday afternoon, and upgraded it to level I in the evening, the ministry said.     According to China's regulations, natural disasters in the country are classified into four categories based on their severity. The Level I emergency plan covers the most serious class of natural disasters.     A disaster relief work group of the State Council, China's Cabinet, rushed to the quake-hit county of Wenchuan on Monday evening to coordinate the rescue and relief work.     Meanwhile, the ministry said strong winds and hailstorms lashed Hubei, Hebei and Jiangsu provinces from Sunday evening to early Monday morning, affecting more than 630,000 people.     In central China's Hubei Province, the hailstorms attacked 10 counties, affecting 515,000 people, collapsing 85 rooms of 33 households and damaging another 4,761 rooms as of 11 a.m. Monday. The direct economic loss was estimated at 385 million yuan (55 million U.S. dollars).     Hailstorms also lashed three counties of north China's Hebei Province on Sunday, affecting 92,100 locals and resulting in a direct economic loss of 7.65 million yuan.     In east China's Jiangsu Province, 24,000 people also suffered from strong winds and hails Sunday evening. XIAMEN, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- China will further open up to the world and step up its international investment cooperation, Vice Premier Wang Qishan promised here Monday.     Addressing the 12th Xiamen International Trade and Investment Fair in the east Fujian Province, Wang said the country would continue to stick to the national policy of opening up, constantly improve its policies on utilizing foreign investment and investing in foreign countries, and create more space for foreign companies to develop their business in China.     China's reform and opening up policy had significantly transformed the country in the past 30 years, and its accession to the World Trade Organization had further integrated it with the global economy, he said.     Although the country met with severe natural disasters and an unfavorable international economic environment, its coping measures made its national economy stay healthy on the whole, he said, noting it was confident in and capable of overcoming the current difficulties and challenges.     Expounding on improving its policies on utilizing foreign investment and investing in foreign countries, Wang vowed to further improve the country's investment environment including building a service-oriented government, a market of fair competition, a transparent legal environment and stable policy environment.     He also stressed lifting the quality and diversifying the means of utilizing foreign investment, and encouraging domestic enterprises to invest in foreign countries.     The Chinese government had always supported trade and investment liberalization and opposed protectionism in any form, he said, vowing to work with the world to eliminate trade and investment barriers and cope with various difficulties and challenges for global economic prosperity and stability.     Attendants of the forum are from 120 countries and regions and seven international organizations
