FALLS CHURCH, Va. – It's the time of year for the great outdoors and the sounds of summer – or rather, a socially-distanced summer.“When we're outdoors or keeping a social distance with kids, they have a little more flexibility,” said Ryan Amato, recreation program supervisor for day camps in Falls Church, Virginia.According to the American Camp Association, about 8,400 overnight camps and 5,600 day camps usually operate across the country. This year, 62% of camps closed, but the ones that didn’t underwent some changes.“We really had to, I don’t want to say dumb down, but really minimize the activity we do and find things we can do while social distancing and still keeping their interest,” Amato said.That meant placing kids in smaller, individual camp groups and trying to keep them outside as much as possible. Eventually, though, when the heat forces them to go inside, some of the changes become more obvious, like the use of a rope, which students hold onto at six-foot intervals to enter the camp’s recreation building in a socially distant manner.“We do have a rope that we keep and keep them six feet when they're walking,” Amato said. “They should mask on as well because it gets a little congested in hallways.”Camp counselor Maya El-Hage says some things are missing, like field trips to the pool, and certain camp goers.“There's definitely faces that I see every summer that are not here,” she said.Now, they’re focused more on classroom games and arts and crafts at a distance.“We're making it work,” El-Hage said. “We're set up like these 6-foot tables, so that they know where they're supposed to be.”So, could these day camps – with classroom set-ups – serve as a guide to schools trying to reopen? It depends.“I think their challenges are a little greater, but I do think there's some learning that the school systems can learn from watching some of the summer camps in their jurisdictions,” said Danny Schlitt, director of parks and recreation in Falls Church, Virginia.Yet, they admit their programs are geared towards fun and schools have a more complex mission.“It's a learning environment in there and they're going to be there for long periods of time,” Schlitt said. “Once you get indoors things do change a lot, you know, and it really is important - it becomes that much more important - for the mask wearing and the social distancing.”That’s where parents can make a difference, they say.“The parent starts at home with, you know, talk about the importance of social distancing, importance of wearing a mask,” Amato said, “and when they can enforce that, it helps our staff do it here. (KGTV) — The man charged with killing a 55-year-old woman as she left bible study last year has been sentenced.Dionicio Torrez Jr., 25, was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the March 7, 2017, shooting of Catherine Kennedy in Escondido. The judge also gave Torrez Jr. an extra 35 years to life in prison for attempted murder of rival gang members. ENCINITAS, Calif., (KGTV) -- Friends and family celebrated the survival of 14-year-old Keane Webre-Hayes at a community paddle-out event. The teenager was attacked by a great white shark at Beacon's Beach one year ago this month. The line between life and death is so thin for Keane."People come up to me and say, 'hey what's that from'?" Keane said as he pointed at the large scars on this left cheek, ear, and neck. Last September, the then 13-year-old was bitten by a great white shark while lobster diving at Beacon's Beach. "I swam 70 yards to a kayak with basically no arm," Keane said. He screamed for help toward a few kayakers in the distance. That is when he met Matthew Ephron, who helped him get to shore. "He did most of the work, and we just got him in so that he wouldn't be out there forever," Ephron said. Doctors said Keane lost half of the blood in his body. But 1,000 stitches later, the boy survived. And for the last year, doctors, trainers, therapists, and teachers helped Keane find his new normal."We honestly couldn't have gone through it without the support of the community," Keane's mother, Ellie Hayes, said. "The hugs, the love, the gifts, the support."So to say thank you, Keane's family hosted a paddle-out at Moon Light State Beach to honor his survival. "Without them, I would not be able to move my arm," Keane said. "I probably would not be who I am today without them."Keane has made incredible strides. From being bedridden for weeks, he now plays in a club beach volleyball team. Family and friends said Saturday's paddle-out is a celebration of life and proof of Keane's incredible resilience. "I definitely want people to know that I can do things, and also if I can do that, you can do that if you put your mind to it," Keane said. Local surf-art legend Andy Davis also attended the event and gave Keane a custom painting featuring a man on a surfboard in Keane's favorite color, pink. 1937

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - The recuperative care facility run by Interfaith Community Services in Escondido is bright and clean. On the surface, it’s hard to tell the residents inside are just starting their recovery from a low point in their lives.“I don’t know how I would have made it this far,” said Dough Yorba about his chance encounter with Interfaith.He lost his job around Christmas last year and soon after wound up in the hospital for extreme back pain. That’s when he got another diagnosis: cancer.“Oh, I freaked out. Both my parents died from cancer,” he said.Without any income, it got worse when he lost his apartment and transportation.“I literally had no place to go.”But as he was about to start chemotherapy, a social worker at the hospital mentioned the recuperative care facility in Escondido and he jumped at the opportunity.“Every aspect of life is covered here. Your meals are wonderful. The staff goes out of the way to help you with so many things,” he described.As helpful as the facility is, it only has 32 beds.“We project there is a need for another 50-100 beds,” said Greg Anglea, CEO of Interfaith Community Services. “Maybe even more than that.”California hospitals have seen an increase in homeless patients. According to Kaiser Health News, hospitals across the state discharged 28% more homeless patients in 2017 than they did in 2015.In January of this year, California implemented a new law aiming to reduce the practice of “homeless dumping.” It requires hospitals to provide homeless patients vaccinations, a meal and clothing before discharging them. Hospitals must also show that they tried to connect the patients with housing services, though patients can refuse or choose their own destination, even if it’s back to the streets.“That’s a needed improvement,” said Anglea of the new law, but noted it still doesn’t solve the main problem of giving continued medical care to discharged homeless patients. 1955
